Santino has announced that from November 21st, 2016 through January 3rd, 2017, all pet adoption fees are being waived at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. All adoptions include free spaying/neutering, rabies vaccinations and microchipping. “We are asking all Town of Hempstead families to consider bringing a shelter dog or cat ‘home for the holidays,’” stated Supervisor Santino. “Residents will not pay a

My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and flitting to and fro, and the

occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

Playing since she was five years old, Sophia joined the varsity team in eighth grade and has won multiple AllConference, All-County, All-Long Island and All-State awards as well as a Player of the Week award. As with Ally, Sophia also was a captain on the volleyball team and helped it win its fifth county championship. Sophia said she chose Hofstra, because she wanted to attend a good school with a top sports program that was close to home. Four more athletes have committed to Division II teams. Baseball outfielder Andrew Cain will play the sport for the University of New Haven Chargers. Andrew,

who captained the baseball team last year and expects to again this year, said the team has gone to semi-playoffs multiple times and looks forward to another good season this year. Andrew was named All-Conference as a sophomore and All-County as a junior. A three-season athlete, he also plays football and basketball. He is considering majoring in criminal justice. Lacrosse mid-fielder Patrick Kern will join the Molloy College Lions lacrosse team. He plans on studying

secondary education. The Academic All-Conference and All-Conference athlete has been playing the sport since he was five years old and joined the varsity team at the end of freshman year. The team competed in the conference semi-finals his sophomore and junior year. Patrick said Molloy is a great value and best suits him both academically and athletically. Lacrosse player Kaitlyn Meyer also heads to Molloy College. Kaitlyn started playing the sport in third grade and joined the varsity team as a freshman. She was named All-Conference as a sophomore and junior. She said she is excited to attend the campus she fell in love with when her sister, Stephanie, started college there. Kaitlyn plans to major in speech pathology. Lacrosse goalie Jessica Strong will play for the Merrimack College Warriors. Playing since fourth grade, she was moved up to varsity as a junior. She said she chose Merrimack because she liked the new coach’s vision for the team and what she hopes to accomplish. Jessica is involved in numerous clubs and most enjoys Model Congress. She plans to major is secondary education and minor in U.S. history. Addressing the crowd, Athletic Director Thomas Condon said, “I want to thank the parents and coaches for your commitment to our student-athletes. You’ve given our students a strong foundation and the lessons learned on the playing field…commitment, selfdiscipline, sportsmanship, respecting others, and the ability to enjoy themselves while working hard are values that our athletes will carry with them through life. Students and their parents, wearing college T-shirts or sweatshirts, decorated a section of the high school athletic office with balloons, college baseball caps, and pennant flags in their school colors as coaches and administrators posed for photos and offered congratulatory words. U.S. Lacrosse 2016 All-American Allison (Ally) Palermo will join Northwestern University Wildcat’s Division I lacrosse team and will study journalism at one of the most respected programs in the country. A mid-fielder and team captain, Ally received the honor of All-American for her superior skills and exceptional game sense, knowledge and sportsmanship. She was one of 10 girls in Nassau County to receive the title, but the only one to earn it after her junior season, an achievement that further attests to her talent. She began playing the sport in second grade and made the varsity team her freshman year, helping the team to semi and quarter finals. This year the team had an undefeated season. She also played on the School Girls National Team, which captured the Long Island Championship, as well as other traveling, national and camp teams. In addition to lacrosse, Ally was captain of the volleyball team, which just won its fifth Nassau County championship in six years, and will captain the basketball team. She is Student Council secretary, participates in Freshmen Mentors, a group the helps freshmen acclimate to the high school, and works on the high school yearbook. Softball pitcher Sophia Dandola will lend her talents to Hofstra University Pride’s Division I softball team.

Impressing Colleges

Representatives from 34 colleges and universities from across the country recently visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and were impressed with what they saw. This year, for the first time, LIHSA combined its Inter Arts Festival with its annual College Fair, making a profoundly positive first impression on college reps. More than 150 teen artists and their families met with the reps from a number of prestigious colleges and universities including Berkley College of Music, New York Film Academy, University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, James Madison University, Carnegie Mellon University, Eastman School of Music and several SUNY schools. and there were exclusive screenings of student films. “LIHSA has such talented students,” said the representative from SUNY Purchase. “It was great being able to see them showcase their work.” A colleague from Stony Brook University enthusiastically agreed. “This was an amazing show of talent. Extraordinary!” “The event was well planned and it was really nice to see the students perform,” said the Muhlenberg College representative. “We hope to attend again next year.” The Long Island University rep was equally impressed: “This is a great way to experience student talent.” At LIHSA, college preparation is serious business and students put a lot of work into it. They are guided through the process every step of the way by their program directors, guidance counselors and teachers, who help them with everything from college applications and essays, to portfolio reviews and prescreening of performance recordings.

Once all the applications have been submitted, the process of individualized scholarship searches begins. Last year, collegebound graduates earned more than $6 million in scholarships, and this year LIHSA plans to surpass that number. “We coordinated the Inter Arts Festival with the College Fair to show the college representatives in attendance the extraordinary talent of our students,” LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson said of the event. “We wanted them to experience first hand why our students should be considered for admission to their schools. The fair is designed to target the needs of our students, allowing them to evaluate their options and make informed decisions about college applications. Deep, strategic thinking goes into all of our programs and events. That’s what makes LIHSA so exceptional, and what affords our students unique opportunities that cannot be matched anywhere else in the state.”
