Nutritious diets have long been touted as essential components of healthy lifestyles. Many people have a tendency to view diet as something that’s purely physical, associating the foods they eat with how they look and how much energy they have. While accurate, it doesn’t paint the full picture of just how big and positive an impact healthy diets can have on overall health. In regard to healthy diets, it’s hard to dispute the effectiveness of the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet focuses on plant-based foods and, as a result, includes lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and olive oil. The diet is so healthy that the World Health Organization even recognizes it as a healthy, sustainable dietary pattern.

massive ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive will take place at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 2nd from 10am to 3pm. In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, Optimum, and the New York Islanders, the Town is collecting toys to help families and those less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In addition to the ‘Cruise-Thru’, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14th. Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster Bay, as just last year we collected close to 30,000 toys for Long Island children. I encourage all of our residents who are able

to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.” The ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly to the cause and help bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a holiday drop box where children can drop their letters to Santa off at. Letters dropped off with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday. “Toys for Tots sends a message of hope to less fortunate children who otherwise wouldn’t be receiving presents this holiday season. I urge residents, who can, to

donate new unwrapped toys to any of our dropoff locations,” said Councilman Tom Hand. “By making a donation, you can help ease the financial burden of our families in need this holiday season.” Toys for Tots Collection Boxes are located at the following locations: • Oyster Bay Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay; • Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa; • Ice Skating Center at Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage. Additionally, eligible households can receive energy efficiency services, which includes the

cleaning of primary heating equipment to allow for its safe and efficient operation. Customers can apply for this benefit by reaching out to their local Department of Social Services location, which can be found here: https://otda.ny.gov/ programs/heap/contacts/ Customers who apply for and receive one of these state or federal benefits are automatically placed on PSEG Long Island’s Household Assistance rate, which provides a discount of more than $35 on every electric bill, along with the Residential Energy Affordability Program providing energy efficiency measures and suggestions to help lower consumption. How customers can lower their bills The most effective thing customers can to do lower their bills is to use electricity more efficiently. Here are some helpful tips: Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used

in the home, and LEDs use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save the average American household about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more. Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. Seal windows and doorframes with weather

stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money. Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. Install a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Additionally, PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort PLUS program offers enhanced rebates for customers who meet certain income qualifications. and expanded housing opportunities where we saw families find improved health, stability, and hope for the future. The impact of safe, affordable supportive housing can never be overstated. Housing really is healthcare and it changes lives. While some people stay in our housing for a few years and move on with a housing voucher or decide to live with family, many stay long term and set roots in the community. In one situation, we admitted a single mom and her six-month-old son. She had a history of addiction but had come into recovery and was seeking housing. They were living in a single room for over a year when they were accepted into Options’ housing. While in housing and supported by a case manager, she has maintained her health and sobriety. She is involved in her community and her son, now 21, is finishing college while also working. She reunited with her two older children who visit regularly, and she proudly hosts holiday gatherings for her family and friends. Today, through long and short-term housing programs, Options houses over 100 PLWHA’s and their family members (77). We help more than 400 Long Islanders living with HIV and AIDS access medical care and benefits through case management services and vital health education

and resources. We employ “peers” who inspire others toward goal achievement through their lived experience. Furthermore, Options is partnered with Northwell Health and several other providers in Nassau County to ensure that HIV prevention services meet community needs. On the front line of the HIV Epidemic since 1994, Options for Community Living implemented a safety net for those who needed it at a time when many were still afraid. These programs remain active today and continue to impact our local and nationwide efforts to “end the epidemic” especially in high-risk groups. Options For Community Living Acknowledging World AIDS Day management services for people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA’s.) We connected people to medical care and benefits and provided additional resources, information, and support. Soon after we began to develop supportive housing as homelessness among this population increased. Both programs expanded to become the largest of their kind on Long Island and still operate today. Other services like treatment adherence, medical and supportive case management, health education, and housing related financial assistance including rent subsidies provide additional support and have helped thousands of PLWHA’s live healthier and more independent lives. At the inception of Options Medicaid case management program in 1994, AIDS was the leading cause of death for all Americans ages 2544 years old (3). As a new Program Coordinator in my early 30’s I was grateful for the opportunity yet extremely nervous about being responsible for program development. We were seeking referrals and offering to provide help to a population that had not been targeted before and was less familiar to Options. The internet was not yet widely utilized, so we used our own initiative and research to document community need for grants through library visits, phone

ALLISON COVINO calls and CDC epidemiology searches. Outreach also required a boots on the ground approach with inperson presentations, new community relationships and frequent newspaper ads. Once several clients were enrolled and their needs assessed we realized even more challenges lay ahead. Options employees hired for this new program were caring and compassionate but at times were overwhelmed by the emotional toll of the work. They were often the only support for clients who were visibly sick and/or homeless after being evicted by their family once they disclosed their HIV positive status. Client risk factors were assessed, including histories of substance use or unprotected sex, and staff were responsible to not only

have difficult conversations about safer practices but to help prioritize needs and goals. Clients faced stigma and fear of transmission in the community but also needed education and advocacy to survive. Others lost relationships or jobs, and many were dying. It was a time of true crisis and we all learned and often cried together. To this day, I continue to feel very proud of everyone involved with the program, then and now. Thankfully, by 1997, AIDSrelated deaths in the U.S. declined by 47 percent and highly active antiretroviral therapy became the standard of HIV care (3). This was a significant medical advance, but people still needed housing, support, and advocacy. Options responded with additional Ryan White funded programing

Each year, World AIDS Day is observed on December 1st and provides an opportunity for people to unite around the goal of ending the HIV epidemic, show support for people living with HIV, and remember those we have lost to the disease. Although great progress has been made, the fight is not over. AIDS-related mortality decreased by 69% since 2004, however, there were 39 million people globally living with HIV and 1.5 million new infections in 2022. Median HIV prevalence was higher among sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender persons, IV drug users and prisoners (1). Key populations continue to need support because most new HIV infections and deaths occur where certain highrisk groups are unaware, underserved or neglected (2). For almost 30 years, Options for Community Living, Inc.’s (Options) has been a significant force in the effort to end the HIV epidemic on Long Island. Founded in 1982, Options had been providing housing and support services for adults living with mental illness and operated an emergency shelter program for homeless families in Suffolk County (1990-2013.) In the early 1990’s as HIV+ cases on Long Island grew in number, Options recognized the profound need to serve this population. In 1994, Options began to provide intensive Medicaid case

Creation and innovation were front and center at Seaford Harbor Elementary School’s annual STEAM night on Nov. 16. The family event combined elements of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade were invited, but older siblings and parents also enjoyed the hands-on projects. There were two Mad Science assemblies which featured chemistry demonstrations, such as making slime and disappearing water. The

cafeteria was filled with innovation stations led by Harbor teachers. Children could use clay to form marble mazes, make binary code name bracelets, engineer anything they could imagine with pipe cleaners and create cool paper designs through origami. In the courtyard, students make Alka Seltzer rockets but dropping a tablet into a small container of water and putting on the lid. Then they stood back and waited for the pop. Students could

also build with blocks, Legos, magnetic tiles and more in the Snapology innovation bus. The art room was transformed into a growth mindset escape room, in which students used their problem-solving and teamwork skills to crack codes so they could advance from station to station. The event was organized by Assistant Principal Caroline Stringer. All students received a packet with science and engineering activities to do at home.
