Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at
times, shouting in exasperation. “JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation. What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that
you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle. Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth. Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to. It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers. The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!
If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! HOT CHOCOLATE 5K RUN/WALK HONORARY CO-STARTERS The Seaford Wellness Council (SWC) has selected the Honorary Co-Starters for its 15th annual run/walk to be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018. The community event, recognized as the third largest 5K run on Long Island, will commence at 9:00 AM in front of Seaford High School. disease. Patients with dystonia experience involuntary muscle movements on a particular side of the body or all over. The condition can be genetic or caused by damage to the nervous system. Those with the gene for dystonia do not always contract the condition, further adding to the mystery of this condition. Currently there is no cure for dystonia; the medical community can only treat the symptoms. Dr. Eidelberg was recognized for his pioneering work in using brain imaging and network modeling to identify abnormal brain circuits in people with dystonia. Using these novel techniques, he showed how genetic mutations influence the development of dysfunctional brain circuits, and why some people with the mutation have symptoms of the disorder while others do not. His studies also provided insights as to the location and severity of symptoms in individual
patients. This led to new image-based methods to evaluate individuals with different forms of dystonia and help objectively assess their response to treatment. Presented as part of the partnership between the Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson Foundation and MJFF, the Bachmann-Strauss Prize broadens public awareness and recognizes key scientific discoveries in dystonia. The prize honors dystonia researchers for key scientific discoveries and provides incentive for the next generation of investigators to continue forging paths toward cures. “Dr. Eidelberg’s contributions to understanding Parkinson’s disease cannot be overstated,” said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institute. “His research has opened important new avenues for mapping brain networks that are fundamental to understanding debilitating movement disorders.”

Feinstein Institute for Medical Research Professor David Eidelberg, MD, won the fourth annual Bachmann-Strauss Prize for Excellence in Dystonia Research. Dr. Eidelberg received an unrestricted $100,000 grant for his use of innovative brain imaging techniques and computational algorithms to better understand the pathophysiology of this disorder and its treatment. Michael J. Fox and Todd Sherer, PhD, CEO of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF), presented the prize at an MJFF event in New York City on November 10, 2018. “I am honored to join the esteemed roster of Bachmann-Strauss Prize winners who are leading researchers in dystonia,” said Dr. Eidelberg. “With the financial support from MJFF, I can continue to better understand the cause and identify treatments for dystonia.” Dystonia is a movement disorder and a common symptom of Parkinson’s

The Power of Air Teamwork was essential as fifth-graders at Seaford Manor Elementary School had to design and test balloon-powered cars. The engineering project culminated with race day to see which group’s vehicle could travel the furthest. Teacher Candice Kaplan provided each group with a limited supply of materials — a plastic water bottle, straws, bottle caps and wooden sticks. They had to use these recycled materials to build a vehicle that would move as an attached balloon deflated.
Students followed the engineering design process during this STEAM activity, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, the art and math. They watched videos about successful inventions and discovered the most effective ways to use materials to make a product. Combining this with their knowledge of one of the types of simple machines — the wheel and axle — students sketched their designs and labeled the parts before building. A trial and error process followed, and the young engineers made
modifications to their cars before the big race. “STEAM activities, combined with habits of mind strategies, are an amazing way to develop crucial problem-solving, teamwork, analysis, innovation and other skills important for our future scientists, engineers, mathematicians and all other professionals,” Ms. Kaplan said. “Hands-on enrichment has proven to be helpful to boost confidence and increases motivation to learn new skills.”

New Kid (Writers) on the Block Seaford’s newest authors may not be on the New York Times bestseller list yet, but they are well on their way. First-graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School recently published their first books. Through the Columbia University Teacher’s College Writing Workshop program, students wrote non-fiction stories about small moments in their lives. Each child was asked to identify a memory, and then “zoom in” on one aspect of it, noted teacher Melanie Bien. The young authors were challenged to “bring their characters
to life” by adding a lot of detail through vivid descriptions and personal reflections. They used mentor texts by author George McClements to identify literary elements they wanted to use in their own stories. Children followed the same process as professional authors. After coming up with an idea, they planned out their stories, wrote first drafts, edited, revised and published. They used classroom resources such as the word wall and their spelling folders to assist with their writing.
The books also included illustrations that matched the words on each page. Ms. Bien’s class held a publishing party on Nov. 16, in which students read their completed pieces aloud. The stories were then added to the classroom library alongside the books written by their favorite authors. “They really took pride in their work and were invested in the process,” Ms. Bien said. “They took ownership over their writing to make sure that these published pieces were the best that they could possibly be.”

Tech-Savvy Students Fifth-graders at Seaford Manor Elementary School are becoming acclimated with their new laptops by using the devices in all aspects of the curriculum. In Andrea Provenzano’s class, students recently used the interactive presentation software Mentimeter to review math terminology they
have learned this year. The students worked with Ms. Provenzano and Tom Lynch, the executive director for instructional technology and STEM, to further their understanding of place value. The also used their laptops for social studies by researching westward expansion of the United
States and learning about inventions from that time period. All fifth-grade classes have sets of laptops through the Personalized Digital Learning Initiative. Students in grades 6, 7, 9 and 10 also have devices for educational use in school and at home.
