Stay at home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic shed light on housing conditions that put health and safety at risk. This program is designed to help prevent Long Island seniors unnecessary hospitalizations and/or skilled nursing facility admissions. “Seniors across Long Island have made their desire to live in their own homes resoundingly clear, which is why the work that United Way of Long Island does is so vital,” said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer. “I was proud to support United Way’s federal funding application for their Safe At Home For Seniors program. $1 million is now on its way to help
hundreds of seniors across Long Island with repairs and modifications to their homes so they can age in place and in dignity, and I will continue to advocate for a federal investment in home and community-based services.” The delivery of the HUD OAHMP grant requires a home assessment by a licensed occupational therapist (OT). United Way’s community partners, along with the OT’s will help identify the repairs most critically needed for seniors to facilitate aging in place. The types of repairs to these homes will include bathroom renovations (i.e. installing no-slip strips, grab bars, transfer benches) and accessibility features (i.e. lever handles on all doors and faucets, handheld shower heads, wheelchair

United Way of Long Island has been awarded a $1 million Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Older Adults Home Modification Grant Program (OAHMP). Funds will be applied to make safety and functional home modifications and limited repairs to meet the needs of low-income elderly homeowners that allow them to age in place. Long Island’s population is continuing to age; according to 2019 U.S. Census population estimates, there are more than 300,000 Long Islanders 65 years of age or older. The number of residents age 70 and older in Nassau and Suffolk counties is expected to increase by more than 220,000 over 25 years, according to Northwell Health. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates

SEAFORD STUDENTS PLEDGE TO REMAIN DRUG FREE - Students, staff and administrators formed a human red ribbon outside of Seaford High School on Oct. 28 for Red Ribbon Week. Photo courtesy of the Seaford School District Throughout the Seaford School District, students made a visual statement to show their commitment to healthy living during Red Ribbon Week. All four schools joined in the national anti-drug campaign from Oct. 25-29. Activities at Seaford High School were hosted by the Student Against Destructive Decisions club. Students signed pledges vowing to remain drug free and decorated the main hallway with red streamers. On Oct. 28, all students and staff were invited to wear red and they formed a human red ribbon in the courtyard at the end of the school day. Red ribbons were handed out outside of the cafeteria, which students were encouraged to wear throughout the week. “It takes a real partnership between the school, the community and the families within it to increase the probability that our students will make wise choices,” Principal Nicole Schnabel said. “We have the ribbons serve to remind students to make safe choices, and to remind adults of our role
in prevention.” Seaford Middle School had several spirit days to show schoolwide unity for the cause. On specific days, students wore red, sports jerseys, pajamas, Seaford gear and Halloween costumes. Members of the Pupil Personnel Services teams visited classrooms for discussions on topics such as how to resist peer pressure. Students also signed their names on paper red ribbons and covered the windows between the cafeteria and the hallway to show that “Seaford Middle School pledges to be drug free.” At Seaford Harbor Elementary School, activities were centered around this year’s Red Ribbon Week theme, “Drug Free Looks Like Me.” Social worker Sharon Klein and psychologist Elise DeSimone conducted a series of in-person and virtual lessons with students to promote healthy living. Students and teachers could make Flipgrid videos to share the healthy choices they make and why they chose to be drug free.

Chelsea explained that her interest in the AP Capstone classes was based on a desire to improve her public speaking skills. She wants to pursue research opportunities in college and explained that researchers must present their work. Her AP Research project concluded with an oral defense last spring to a panel of three teachers, in which she not only had to present her findings but also answer on-the-spot questions.

Only 375 high school students in the world received a perfect score on their Advanced Placement Research exam last year, and Seaford High School senior Chelsea Russo is part of that prestigious group. Chelsea not only received the top score of 5, but she also earned every possible point on both her research paper and her oral presentation. Her topic was, “Do the non-nutritive sweeteners Ace-K and neotame adversely impact the regeneration of planaria?” She then extrapolated her data to see if these sweeteners could lead to neurodegenerative diseases in humans. Ahead of the Veterans Day holiday and in recognition of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand and Councilwoman Laura Maier joined with local Girl Scouts in delivering Hometown Heroes banners to veterans in communities throughout the Town of Oyster Bay. Earlier this year, banners were unveiled at parks throughout the Town in recognition of over 200 veterans and active duty personnel – both living and
deceased. “I am so proud to have brought this beautiful community recognition program to the Town of Oyster Bay,” said Councilman Steve Labriola. “The Hometown Heroes Banner program is an excellent opportunity to honor the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women who both served and continue to serve in our United States Armed Forces. These banners serve as a stark reminder of the commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy that these amazing men and women displayed during some of

YES Community Counseling Center’s Partnering In Action Change for Tomorrow Grant Initiative recently provided FREE TIPS Training to eighteen Farmingdale Fire Department Volunteers to ensure safe serving of alcohol during the recent Farmingdale Columbus Weekend Fair. TIPS (Training Intervention ProcedureS), a skills-based virtual or inperson training designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking. is an approved alcohol training awareness program
by the New York State Liquor Authority. TIPS may reduce exposure to alcohol liability lawsuits and reduce penalties for alcohol violations; lower insurance premiums; improve customer service and satisfaction; and promote community safety. The training is part of YESCCC’s Partnering in Action Change for Tomorrow (PACT) initiative to reduce binge drinking, intoxication and drunk driving. PACT’s TIPS Program is supported by Chambers of Commerce in Farmingdale, Massapequa, Levittown; Farmingdale
Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT); Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC); Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC); Nassau County Police Department; Town of Hempstead; and the Town of Oyster Bay. The holiday season sometimes arrives with a frenetic pace. At the dawn of the holiday season, there seems to be so much to fit into a relatively short period of time, including planning celebrations and shopping. The rush often begins the Friday after Thanksgiving on a day called Black Friday. Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, Calif., to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion. According to event organizers, the name “Plaid Friday” was chosen from the idea of weaving individual threads of small

Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time (StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours,
the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program. Bringing story time on-demand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members
visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use
their creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of
a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road”
reading room. To learn about how you can help connect military families through reading, visit uso.org/programs. Parents universally know the draw of reading “one more book” to a pleading little one at bedtime. The Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program gives that opportunity back to deployed parents.
