Four exceptionally talented teens attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) have been selected by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) as ScholarArtist Merit Award winners for the 2016-2017 school year. These standout students will be listed in Newsday and honored at the LIAA’s annual gala. Spirit of Giving Wantagh elementary student council members are working hard to make a difference in the lives of community members this holiday season with a number of food, card and supply drives. At Wantagh Elementary School, the student council held a cleaning supply drive for residents moving into homes built by Habitat for Humanity. The students
collected more than 300 individual items including paper towels, dusters, sponges and household cleaners. In addition, Mandalay Elementary School’s student council is currently holding a Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit Island Harvest for distribution to families in need. In honor of Veterans Day, Mandalay Elementary

predictions, they received an “I Voted Today” sticker. “We really wanted to make this feel like the students were at the polls,” Simon said. “The event was such a success; “The students said they felt their voices were really being heard. I believe that the students really gained global awareness throughout this process. I also think that creating a list of the characteristics of a president will resonate for these older students as they seek to be the leaders of the Manor and role models for their younger schoolmates. It is important to note that while outside of the doors of the Manor there was hostility and negativity surrounding this election, inside the walls of my library there were students who were taking notice of what positive qualities each candidate had to offer.”
The reason the students were able to stay positive was because of a lesson they learned from “Kid President” on YouTube, according to Simon. He has a twist on the saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. Kid President says “If you don’t have anything nice to say, you’re not thinking hard enough.” “We kept that in mind as we went through this process,” Simon said. “It was an incredible feeling to walk down the halls on Wednesday morning after Election Day and see the pride on students’ faces when their prediction turned out to be correct.” The outcome? 63 percent of students predicted that President-Elect Donald Trump would become our 45th president.

The presidential election was the focus of a new character education lesson at Seaford Manor Elementary School. Led by Library Media Specialist Samantha Simon, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students during their library periods were asked

Students then had the opportunity to predict the election outcome. Each class came to the library at a scheduled time to reflect on the information they had gathered the week prior. Once they were ready, they stood in line to “check in” and present their “voter registration cards,” which they completed in their classrooms, and write their signature next to their names on the sign-in sheet. Next they were directed to a “voting booth” to make an informed prediction on an iPad. After making their

Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.
Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps. After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Now, I patiently wait for my beautiful blue fins to regenerate so I can be back to my old spectacular self. ‘Til then, enjoy your turkey and your football, your shopping and your decorating, and stay tuned for my next words of wisdom. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. Of the over 16 million service men and women who served our country during World War II, the Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that only about 660,000 are still alive, with an average age of well over 90. In NY State, surviving World War II veterans number less than 100,000. To honor these veterans, the first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take place on April 29th from JFK Airport to Washington DC. Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing this program to the Big Apple for the first time ever and will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War
II, on this “Flight of a Lifetime.” As a 501(c)3 organization, a percentage of the value of any placements of this PSA are tax deductible. If you can send us tearsheets of these placements, we can send recognition for tax purposes. In addition, any stories on veterans or volunteers resulting from these placements will be offered to you as an exclusive. A limited number of press seats for the flight are still available Additional sponsors of this inaugural event, along with veteran participants, are still being sought. Organizers of Big Apple Honor Flight have started the planning process and are looking for volunteers
and veterans to make their mission possible. The group has launched www. BigAppleHonorFlight. com, which contains additional information on how to get involved in the planning. Applications to apply to be a veteran honored on the flight can also be found on the website. They plan to take 75 WWII veterans on their first flight from NYC in the spring. Not until now has an official Honor Flight been organized out of New York City, where the population of WWII veterans is estimated to be in the thousands. “Of all the wars in our nation’s history, it is World War II that threatened the very existence of America as a culturally diverse
and free society,” added Maher. “According to the Veterans Administration, an estimated 430 WWII Veterans die each day nationally. Nassau BOCES Barry Tech held its first blood drive of the year earlier this fall, resulting in a significant contribution to the New York Blood Center. Barry Tech’s Medical Assisting students registered more than 200 prospective donors and collected 174 units of lifesaving blood. Additional drives will be held in February and April of 2017. “We are extremely proud of our students’ critical contribution to the blood drive,” said Barry Tech Principal Peter Dalton. “While community service is a core value here at
Barry Tech, the work these students have put in is more than community outreach - it’s a demonstration of their dedication to their chosen field.” “A Barry Tech education goes beyond the classroom experience,” said Medical Assisting Teacher Joan Lambert. “Students must apply what they have learned in the real world. By enrolling in the Medical Assisting program, these young men and women made a commitment to help save lives. They have made good on that commitment through this event.”
Barry Tech’s Medical Assisting program prepares high school students for continuing education and careers in the ever-expanding field of healthcare. Students in this course of study prepare for the national exam and work toward establishing themselves as certified medical assistants. On Sunday, November 6th, Long Island’s educators, treatment professionals, and community members gathered in recognition of substance abuse recovery at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s 27th annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast. This family-focused community event was held at the IBEW Local 25 Hall in Hauppauge, NY and featured powerful stories of personal struggles with addiction, as well as highlighting the efforts of addiction service providers and advocates for changes to policies affecting those suffering from substance abuse disorders. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) honored Father Stephen Donnelly from St. Patrick’s Church in Huntington, NY whose outstanding accomplishments have helped promote awareness, and helped many individuals enter treatment for addiction. The event,
headed up by Claudia Ragni of the Kenneth Peters Center and Nancy Lawless of Seafield Center, raised more than $50,000 to support LICADD’s work in the community. LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW,CASAC summed up the event, “Each year, this gathering is an important opportunity for the Long Island recovery community to reflect on victories and the miracle of recovery, as well as to rally around the crucial issues for the coming year. We have made great strides in 2016 on behalf of Long Islanders struggling with addiction, but there is much left to accomplish.” Families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction across Long Island and every day the region loses at least one person to fatal overdose. However, it remains uncommon for health plans to cover comprehensive addiction treatment, while unnecessary bureaucratic
barriers often stand between someone receiving the help they need and remaining trapped in an overwhelming – and completely treatable – disease cycle. In addition, the event’s Recovery Speaker, discussed her own inspiring journey into and back out of the depths of addiction. Her story underlined the extremely treatable nature of addiction as a disease and offered hope to those who battle this illness or have a family member struggling with it. Earlier this fall, the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center (ALC) held its first Health Fair. Students and staff at the center were encouraged to take advantage of free services provided by 12 different healthcare vendors on site for the event. Among the o r g a n i z a t i o n s contributing to the fair were Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), North Shore LIJ, The LGBT Network, Child Care Council of Nassau, Dr. Ron Mark of Mark Medical Care, United Healthcare, Shaklee Weight and Nutrition Products, and World Gym. In addition to a profusion of helpful, healthful information, fairgoers had access to a variety of services
including dental, vision and podiatry screenings. The focal point of the fair was the NUMC NuHealth Mobile Breast Imaging Center, offering free mammographies and breast exams, as well a host of information on cancer prevention and awareness. A total of nine mammograms were conducted throughout the day. The driving force behind the Health Fair is Betty Rodriguez, a student at the ALC and a breast cancer survivor. Ms. Rodriguez is passionate about informing the community of the importance of good health and spreading awareness about the healthcare options that are available. “I’m very excited and grateful for the
opportunity to bring this event to the Adult Learning Center,” Ms. Rodriguez said of the fair. “Nassau BOCES is an amazing organization that has opened doors for many people. I have gotten so much support from everyone here; it is my home.” She also thanked the Parent Leadership Institute for “giving me the courage to keep going and never stop.” “The Health Fair is a wonderful idea that is helpful to both the school and the community,” said ALC student Maria Argueta. “It is especially helpful that some of the materials are in Spanish. It’s good information and it’s important that everyone gets it. I hope the fair returns next year.

Nutcracker Anniversary Councilwoman Susan A. Berland honored the Long Island Ballet Theatre on their 30th Anniversary of The Nutcracker at Mac’s Steakhouse. The Long Island Ballet Theatre was founded by Jan Hanniford Goetz, a gifted choreographer who envisioned a chambersized ballet company comprised of professional dancers and student dancers capable of dancing with noted professionals. After 30 years, they include professional dancers, pre-professional dancers and students that study
at Huntington Ballet Academy which follows the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum. The Long Island Ballet Theatre has featured classical productions of Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and a new Nutcracker in 2008 and 2010. They have also presented original, contemporary work at the Long Island Dance Consortium’s Festival of Dance, Huntington Arts Council’s Summer Arts Festival and the Long Island Ballet Competition.
“I am proud to recognize the Long Island Ballet Theatre on celebrating its 30th Anniversary of The Nutcracker in Huntington,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Hotline Training Completed Nine women from throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens are new volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, having completed a 12-hour training session. As volunteers, the women will answer the hotline (800.877.8077), taking calls from people concerned about breast cancer throughout New York State, and represent the hotline at health fairs and other educational programs. Most of the new volunteers are breast cancer survivors, such as Yolanda Peters from
St. Albans. “Breast cancer is no longer my grandmother’s disease. We younger women should know that breast cancer doesn’t stop us, it’s just another obstacle we need to cross. I wanted to be able to learn and educate more women in my community. And working with breast cancer hotline I can do so.” Christina Demosthenous of Westbury was 32 when she was diagnosed 11 years ago. She says, “Young women face unique issues with breast cancer and I hope I can be especially helpful to those women.” Grace Verderame of Central Islip, who called the hotline for help when
she was diagnosed with breast, says, “I want to be a volunteer because I want to give back, not only to the cancer community but to Adelphi who was there for me when I needed them.” She called the hotline several times. “The volunteers I spoke with helped calm my worst fears.” Debra Langendorff of East Rockaway said she wished she had known about the Adelphi program when first diagnosed in 2006 and wants help for others going through breast cancer. NUMC Recognition
Nassau University Medical Center was recognized by the Police Surgeons’ Association of NY at a dinner at which several awards were presented to the hospital in recognition of its superior care provided to patients being transported to its trauma service.
NUMC received a plaque for the emergency department as well as for the trauma service. Staff from the emergency department and from the trauma service were on hand to accept the plaque. A special plaque was also presented to trauma surgeon Dr. Kelley
Sookraj for the excellent care provided to Inspector Robert Psoinas, a trauma patient at NUMC for two months following an auto accident. Inspector Psoinas was on hand to personally present the plaque to Dr. Sookraj and express his gratitude for saving his life.
Sparking Connections Librarians from all three Long Island BOCES converged at the UPsky Hotel in Hauppauge for The Long Island School Library Systems 3rd Regional Institute. This unique event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Carl Vitevitch, Eastern Suffolk BOCES; Sara Kardasz, Western Suffolk BOCES, and Donna Rosenblum, Nassau BOCES. It was a day for professional development and so much more. Bring them to Life! and To Your Health!, attendees learned hands on character education activities, how to expand students reading experiences, and acquired FREE resources for teaching and learning about the human body, health, and wellness. Eighteen vendors including FactCite, Scholastic, OverDrive, Soundzabound, Infobase, Follett, edu.buncee, and Delaney, lined the
hallways of the hotel offering solutions, creative inspiration, and innovative learning tools. The teacher librarians shared stories and examples of the “voice of their library” with Keynote speaker Shannon McClintock Miller via Padlet. Padlet is free software to create an online bulletin board to display information. Shannon and the attendees found the SPARK Connections presentation relatable because it wove the information and stories shared on Padlet to enhance the concepts of savvy, progressive, advanced, radical, and knowledgeable.
