Students also created a Day of the Dead altar with pictures of notable people of Hispanic descent who have died including artists, entertainers and poets, as well as Stan Lee and characters from the Avengers to make it more relatable to student interests. Ms. Hamilton said that the project was completed during Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. She explained that the goal of the project was to “bridge cultures in an immersive activity.”

Creating cultural connections is an important component of world language classes at Seaford Middle School. Under the direction of teacher Danyi Hamilton, students in seventh grade Spanish classes created an elaborate display for Day of the Dead in the school’s front lobby. Day of the Dead is a multi-day holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage in other countries in early November. Family and friends gather to remember loved ones who have died to help support their spiritual journeys. The display featured papel picado Mexican folk art and calaveras created by students. Papel

Small Moments Make A Big Moment First graders worked hard on their writing projects at Seaford Manor Elementary School, and teacher Jamie Flannery wanted to make sure they got the credit they deserved. After finishing their “small moment” stories, students were able to share their pieces with their classmates and feel like true authors. Ms. Flannery said that the project began with students brainstorming
meaningful moments in their lives, and then picking a specific instance to write about. They went through multiple drafts as they edited and revised their work to make it better, adding text features such as dialogue and descriptive language. The young writers even had to come up with creative conclusions, replacing the traditional “the end” with a sentence on the feelings that special moment
evoked. Students then recorded themselves on iPads reading their stories. The iPads were set up on the desks during a publishing party on Nov. 12. Children went around the room to watch each other’s videos and look through the completed books. Each student also had to leave a “glow,” so when a child returned to his or her desk, it was covered in sticky notes with compliments.

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.
There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.
In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. NUFACEGLOW NOW OPEN IN SEAFORD! - The Seaford Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of NuFaceGlow, located at 3862A Sunrise Hwy, Seaford. On hand for the occasion were owners Anna and Ralph Glowacki, County legislator Steven Rhoads, Chamber President Kenneth Jacobsen.
LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Seaford Hot Chocolate 5K Run/Walk The Seaford Wellness Council (SWC) has selected the Honorary Co-Starters for its 16th annual run/walk to be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019. The community event, recognized as the third largest 5K nongovernmental, community organized run on Long Island, will commence at 9:00 AM in front of Seaford High School. The Council is pleased to announce that Nick Bilotta and Robert Podesta will officially start the race. The SWC traditionally has designated, in conjunction with the Seaford Chamber of Commerce, the Business Person of the Year as one co-starter while electing the second co-starter from TALL TOWERS AN ENGINEERING FEAT - Third graders in Carol Rindos and the Seaford community. Tara Flood’s class at Seaford Harbor Elementary School recently became engineers during an engaging STEAM activity. Children had to work cooperatively to construct a tower, as tall as they could possibly make it, using pencils, tape, construction paper and index cards. Each group first came up with a design plan. This year the Chamber representative will be Nick Bilotta and the community delegate will be Robert Podesta. Council President Mike DiSilvio remarked that “both Bilotta and Podesta are stalwarts in the community and it is a real pleasure to honor them for all they do for Seaford.” Bilotta is the owner of the family-operated Final Touch Auto Collision, Inc. and Best Auto Leasing, both in Seaford. Bilotta is an active member of the Seaford Chamber of Commerce serving as it Second Vice President this past year and is well known for his generosity and benevolence to community groups. Podesta recently celebrated his 40th year as
an active member of the Seaford Fire Department, is the only person in the Department’s 124 year history to be its Chief three times and has served on the Seaford Fire District’s Board of Commissioners. Podesta, a Seaford High School graduate, is a partner in an electrical contracting business. The Seaford Hot Chocolate 5K Run/Walk “will proceed perfectly this year with these two prominent individuals officially starting the run” commented Ken Nersesian, SWC Vice President. CoTreasurer Donna de la Bastide observed “that Bilotta and Podesta represent all that is wonderful about Seaford and its residents and businesses.”
Harbor Students Add Their Touch Seaford Harbor Elementary School students are doing their part to make sure that everyone on Long Island has a nice Thanksgiving. They have been decorating paper bags for a local food drive that will benefit hundreds of families. For about a dozen years, third grade teacher
Nancy Kempner has been volunteering for a food drive run by Seaford restaurant Runyon’s, which provides Thanksgiving meals to families throughout the area. Five years ago, she enlisted the help of Harbor’s second through fifth graders to decorate the bags, which will be filled with food and
delivered just in time for the holiday.
