The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is hosting a warm clothing drive at their Hauppauge office for Long Islanders in need. They are accepting donations of new and gently used warm clothing from generous donors in the area. Coats, sweaters, pants, gloves or any other clothing that can protect from the harsh winter season are appreciated. Clothing brought to the LIHC collection bin from November 9th through November 25th at 1383 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26, will be gifted to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island. We are studying maps and our curriculum this year in social studies is ‘Countries around the World.’ Amazingly his lesson was right on target.” Because he enjoys writing stories, Corey created a lesson module titled, “The Love of Books” and developed questions based on the format they have been studying in the module, “Power of Reading around the World.” “His story was awesome because he modeled it after so many of the stories we have already read,” Prefer said. “He came to school in his teacher ‘vest’ and shoes too! They may only be in third grade, but Jason Berthel and Corey Rylander have already experienced what it’s like to be a teacher. They each taught a lesson they created for their class at Seaford Harbor Elementary School — not as an assignment but as a reward. “Jason and Corey’s table of nine students earned the most points in the class for working as a team,” explained teacher Nanci Prefer. “As a reward, students often choose to have lunch with the teacher or a homework pass. This is the first time students requested to teach a lesson to the class as their reward.” Jason, who thought of the idea, developed a power point presentation with the help of his mother, a thirdgrade teacher in Queens. The presentation was on Greenland, a country he said he knew a lot about,

Both boys enthusiastically said they had a lot of fun creating their lesson plans and presenting them to the class. “Everyone liked our presentations and it was a great feeling to actually teach my classmates something new,” Jason said. “I had butterflies at first but it went really well.” Corey called the experience “amazing” and said he liked the question-and-answer part of his presentation the most because he was interested in the answers his classmates gave. “Both Corey and Jason developed meaningful lessons that focused upon the topics under study in the Grade 3 New York State module,” said Principal Donna DeLucia-Troisi. “Thanks to Mrs. Prefer’s excellent teaching as their model, the boys were able to plan and deliver effective lessons that utilized many 21st century skills such as public speaking, power point development, writing, reading, and evaluating.” After Jason and Corey’s success with teaching the class, other students have chosen to follow suit. “We feel happy that we inspired other kids in our class to be teachers,” the boys said. “It’s a great reward; we would definitely do it again!”

Seaford Middle School was awash with the color orange as students and staff joined thousands across the country to stand up against bullying. The movement, called Unity Day, is sponsored by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and aims to heighten awareness and break down barriers to promote more positive, pro-social climates. The Unity Day message was reinforced with a special anti-bullying assembly by athlete and human rights advocate Hudson Taylor, which was made possible by the Seaford Wellness Council.

Hudson for years stood up against homophobia that he observed on sports teams in high school and college, and has changed the lives of those in the LBGT community when he founded the non-profit organization Athlete Ally, which promotes awareness and educational tools to help foster inclusiveness in sports. Hudson, who is straight, spoke to students about the importance of acceptance and kindness toward others and made them aware that they are responsible for the language they use with each other. After the assembly,

Banding Together students marked the day by celebrating ways to rise above bullying and make their school a positive, welcoming environment for all students. “Unity Day is a great way to reinforce powerful messages that foster a better learning environment,” said Nancy Fitzgerald, Seaford Middle School social worker and coordinator of the event. “It was wonderful to see students embrace this important movement by wearing orange and learning how to make their school a place of acceptance and inclusion.”

WEBELOS WALKABOUT - The Webelos of Den #1 and Den #2 of Pack 776 recently took a “suburban” three mile hike to earn their Webelos Walkabout adventure pin. The fourth graders visited eight of the numerous monuments in the Village of Massapequa Park, learned a bit of history along the way, placed a flag and rose in recognition of the honored, and cleared all debris from the sites as their hike service project. The Cubs completed the last third of their afternoon enjoying a picnic lunch and viewing the majesty of the peak of Fall color in the preserve.

Celebration of Togetherness On Sunday, November 8th, Long Island’s educators, treatment professionals, and community members gathered in recognition of substance abuse recovery at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s 26th Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast. This family-focused community event was held at the IBEW Local 25 Hall in Hauppauge, and featured powerful stories of personal struggles with addiction, as well as highlighting the efforts of addiction service providers and advocates

for changes to policies affecting those suffering from substance abuse disorders. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) honored two individuals whose outstanding accomplishments have shaped public policy, expanded public awareness, enhanced treatment options, and help many individuals address growing drug and alcohol problems. The honorees include Community Champion Bruce W. Both, President, United Food and Commercial Workers

Local 1500 and Fisher of Men honoree, Anthony Rizzuto, Provider Relations, Seafield Center and Executive Director of F.I.S.T. LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW,CASAC summed up the event, “Each year, this gathering is an important opportunity for the Long Island recovery community to reflect on both our victories and challenges of the past year, as well as to rally around the crucial issues for the coming year. We have made great strides in 2015 on behalf of Long Islanders struggling with

addiction, but there is much left to accomplish.” Families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction across Long Island and every day the region loses at least one person to fatal overdose. However, it remains uncommon for health plans to cover comprehensive addiction treatment, while unnecessary bureaucratic barriers often stand between someone receiving the help they need and remaining trapped in an overwhelming - and completely treatable -

disease cycle. In addition, the event’s Recovery Speaker, discussed her own inspiring journey into and back out of the depths of addiction. Her story underlined the extremely treatable nature of addiction as a disease and offered hope to those who battle this illness or have a family member struggling with it.
