The Charity of the Month for November is: Long Island Cares www.licares.org

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is n e e d e d , sponsor programs that p r o m o t e self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

Additionally, they are holding their annual Adopt-a-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive! This project involves others to volunteer their time to gather and bag items for families in need so they can have a filling Thanksgiving. This is the perfect opportunity for families, groups and students to get involved in their community. Long Island Cares has a goal of reaching

They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. All donations must be delivered no later than November 20th and must be dropped off between the hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM Monday - Friday. and more. The grand marshal was Ken Haskell, a 1989 Seaford High School graduate and president of the Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee. He was also honored at halftime with citations from State Sen. John Brooks and County Legislator Steve Rhoads. With a truck from the Seaford Fire Department creating an arch of green water, the Vikings took the field. The choir performed the national anthem and then the team quickly showed why they are once again bound for the playoffs. The cheerleaders and pep band helped to further energize the crowd. During halftime, the varsity, junior varsity and middle school cheerleaders performed. Next, the

marching band and color guard stepped onto the field for their spy-themed show with songs from popular movies including “Ant Man,” “Austin Powers,” “James Bond” and “Mission Impossible.” Drum majors Andrew Calvacca and Pablo Hashem conducted the band and also joined in the search for the missing jewel-encrusted Viking helmet. Nicholas Brandi and Onike Pinnock were crowned homecoming king and queen, with Jessica Kofod, Liam McDonald, Maxwell Newman and Katelyn Winter rounding out the Homecoming court. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Help Mrs. Claus www.helpmrsclaus.com www.facebook.com/helpmrsclaus Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Two teams in green and white battled it out on the Raymond J. Buckley Field of Dreams and it was the Seaford Vikings who came away with a decisive win in their homecoming matchup against the Locust Valley Falcons on Nov. 2. The Vikings gave the crowd plenty to cheer about in their 41-0 victory, which wrapped up a 7-1 season. Homecoming festivities started with a parade up Washington Avenue, featuring students and staff from all schools, district administrators and board of education trustees, class banners, the marching band, color guard, cheerleaders, the Seaford Fire Department

Students and staff wore orange for Unity Day, an initiative by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center to acceptance, inclusion and kindness. Murphy’s discussed these virtues as part of his presentation. Principal Dan Smith reminded students that while it is nice to wear the color, it is more important to embody traits of Unity Day. Social worker Nancy Fitzgerald said that Unity Day was part of Red Ribbon Week, a national drug

prevention campaign. There were spirit days throughout the week in which students wore red, tie-dye shirts and crazy hats. During lunch periods, they signed pledges vowing to live drug-free lives. The Students Against Destructive Decisions club helped spread the message by hanging posters throughout the school for Red Ribbon Week. SADD members also decorated the cafeteria with orange tablecloths for Unity Day.

Murphy, who lost his legs at birth, went on to have a successful wrestling career in high school and college. Her class motto is, “It’s not what you make, it’s what you live on.” Ms. Karp said she teaches students how to make “adult decisions” like deciding whether to buy or lease a car and how to save money on a regular basis. “This is my favorite course because I live it,” she said. “I really do practice this.” Seaford High School has consistently been named a Blue Star School by W!SE for its implementation of the financial literacy curriculum and the success of students on the culminating exam.

Money was donated to GiGi’s Playhouse, an organization that supports children with Down syndrome at its 46 achievement centers and promotes acceptance.
