Huntington-based nonprofit organization, and made possible through the generous donation of Theresa Santmann of Babylon. Santmann, who is also the Vice President of the organization’s Executive Board, had previously sponsored four mural panels in the jail’s Visiting Room. The mural was painted over five weeks during the months of September and October. Over the course of the project, participants in the Sheriff’s Youth Tier Initiative received both classroom and hands on instruction in the art of mural painting. Larsen, a lecturer at the Parsons New School in New York City, worked with the incarcerated youth several days a week

Student Spotlight SMART SAFETY? They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior. The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.” Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment. When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college. Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards. And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building. Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient. Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too. The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently. In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair. Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do. Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living. But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,

if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance. Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process. Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all

HALLOWEEN PARADE - Seaford Manor Elementary School’s Halloween Parade was recently held. Students in grades K-5 paraded around the school for family and friends to celebrate Halloween. Among the procession were Disney princesses, superheroes, witches and zombies! Happy Halloween!

Terrific Kids is a Kiwanis-sponsored program that provides schools with a tool to reward students for special achievements that may otherwise go unnoticed. Discussions centered on the consequences of drug, alcohol and tobacco use, and their commitment to their school, community, and most importantly to themselves to be drug and bully free. During lunch students signed pledges to be drug-free and placed them on giant red ribbons in the cafeteria. Activities at both the Harbor and Manor elementary schools centered on safety and how to make positive choices. Age-appropriate lessons, reinforced with puppets and songs, were delivered by the Child Abuse Prevention Services and the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Topics such as, “CyberSmartz,” how to

At Manor Elementary School, teachers performed a puppet show for third and fourth graders called “Nic and Friends,” to illustrate the dangers of cigarettes and alcohol. Kindergartners and first graders also planted red tulip bulbs as a symbol of making good choices and leading healthy lifestyles. The week culminated in a “Pay it Forward” assembly where students learned the importance of spreading kindness and helping others. Harbor Elementary School closed the week with an assembly called “Stop “Bullying Safe School Zone” presented by Master Oh of Ultimate Champions Taekwondo Academy.

Seaford High School senior John DiFrancisci was honored with a “U.S. Army Friday Night Lights Football Tour” Scholar-Athlete Award at Seaford High School’s Homecoming football game, October 25th. The U. S. Army presented a plaque that recognizes him as a student-athlete who possesses the seven core values of the U.S. Army: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage. One of the top students in the class of 2015, John is a three-season athlete and a three-year starter on the Varsity Soccer team. He was selected AllConference for all three years and led the team as Captain this year. John

is also a nominee for the Nassau County Soccer Coaches Scholar-Athlete Award and has been a member of the winter and spring track teams for all four years of high school. “John is a team leader whose work ethic makes him a role-model for the entire team,” said Coach Ralph Pascarella. With a 98 grade point average, “John is a tremendously talented student who impresses all with his intellect and depth of character,” added Principal Scott Bersin. “He sets the highest academic goals and he achieves them.” John intends to major in Biomedical Engineering and he has applied to some of the most competitive schools in the nation.

Members of the U.S. Army National “Friday Night Lights” Tour served as honored guests at Homecoming. In addition to presenting the scholarathlete award, they gave the Seaford Vikings a commemorative U.S. Army coin for the coin toss, commemorative football and a $500 donation to the Booster Club. A U.S. Army Color Guard led the Homecoming parade and the National Anthem before the game, and recognized Judge Terence P. Murphy, the Grand Marshal of the Homecoming parade and a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve who served in numerous locations overseas, including Iraq and Kuwait.

Recreation & Historic Preservation to install a new osprey nesting pole and platform at the Nissequogue River State Park in Kings Park. “We recognize the importance that Long Island’s osprey population

has on the overall ecology of the area,” said John O’Connell, vice president of transmission and distribution, PSEG Long Island. “Anything we can do to ensure that the osprey continue to return to the area, year after year,

while at the same time continuing to deliver 99.9 percent electric reliability, is a win-win.” Two years ago, during Superstorm Sandy, one of the nesting poles in Nissequogue River State Park was damaged. Eager to have the pole and platform restored before next year’s nesting season, the Parks Department recently contacted PSEG Long Island for assistance. “NYS Parks mission is to balance patrons’ recreational activities with the protection of our natural resources. Replacing the damaged pole and platform does both of those beautifully,” said Wayne R. Horsley, Regional Director, Long Island State Park Region. “Ospreys are a favorite among park patrons and the project will provide another nest site for the NY State ‘Species of Concern.’

Nesting Station Restored Parks appreciates the willingness of PSEG Long Island to restoring a nesting platform to NRSP.” The replacement of the damaged pole and platform provides a safe nesting area for the osprey away from vital electrical infrastructure, helping PSEG Long Island maintain strong electric service reliability. Ospreys will often use utility poles and transmission structures for nesting, which jeopardizes system reliability, causes outages and damages equipment. Such nesting also puts the birds in danger of electrocution, as their large wingspan can complete the circuit between closely spaced energized equipment or between an energized wire and a neutral ground wire. Long Island is home to many species of birds, including the majestic osprey. Ospreys are large,

beautiful birds and a popular sight on Long Island. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Long Island’s osprey population decreased and became endangered. The effort to build safe nesting sites on or near waterways has contributed to the rise in the population of osprey.

Take Heart With Tea The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

North Shore LIJ Health Care Systems, which has been a supporting entity for the Mondays at Racine Program for well over a year, showed their support by having Dr. Raptis, Dr. Muratori, Dr, Schwartz, Dr, McKenna and Dr. Ames attend the gala event. Dr. James Harris, a “Top Doctor” as recognized by U. S News and World Report, along with support staff, represented Catholic Healthcare Systems through Good Samaritan Hospital. For the 5th year, the Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk, scheduled to take place in Long Island on Saturday, December 6th, will bring runners and families together to raise funds to fight and cure arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability. The annual festive event, which features a holiday costume contest, kids’ fun run, music and a sponsor expo, will be held at Hofstra University at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Hundreds of Long Island residents including competitive and recreational runners, walkers, corporate teams and families are expected to participate in the Jingle Bell Run/Walk this year. The race is run on a USATF-certified 5K course with finisher awards in each age bracket. “Arthritis affects

more than 50 million Americans, or roughly one in five adults,” said Jennifer Regan Haight, Regional Director of the Arthritis Foundation Long Island Chapter. “Contrary to popular belief, arthritis is not an ‘old person’s’ disease. Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65.” More than 300,000 children also live with arthritis including tenyear-old Sean Carlo, this year’s Jingle Bell Run Youth Honoree, who was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at age four. “When people think of arthritis, they automatically think of minor aches and pains, which is far from the truth,” said Regan Haight. “Various forms of arthritis can seriously affect joints, muscles, internal organs and eyes, and the disease claims
