Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh recently announced a new volunteer program that helps protect the lives of senior citizens. The Town of Oyster Bay is calling on students to volunteer in helping senior citizens register for Smart911, a free public safety service offered by the Nassau County Police Department that allows residents to provide 911 emergency call takers and emergency responders with one’s health condition, prescription medicines and other important medical information. Councilwoman Walsh stated “With many senior citizens not utilizing a computer, this volunteer initiative allows students help their aging neighbors register lifesaving information with the Nassau County Police Department and ensure the highest level of emergency response during a critical time. The information

we submit to Smart911 enables first responders to make better decisions more quickly when taking your call and arriving at your home during an emergency.” Smart911 allows all residents to create a free safety profile for their household at www. smart911.com that includes information necessary for 911 call takers to have in the event of an emergency. Details can include names and photos of all family members, medical conditions, allergies, pets, and emergency contacts. The Safety Profile created by residents will immediately display to 911 call takers when receiving an emergency call, and also provides a way for residents to include information that will enhance disaster response such as power needs for medical equipment, evacuation assistance and sheltering needs. In the

event of a natural disaster, public safety officials will be able to quickly determine which residents need assistance. “Smart911 streamlines the time necessary to collect critical information and allows faster assignment and dispatch of responders to call locations with more information to assist the residents quickly,” added Councilwoman Walsh. Smart911 also provides the capability to conduct Mass Emergency Alerting callouts, allowing residents to opt-in to receive emergency alerts from public safety officials based on geographic locations of events. These mass notifications can be sent through various means of communications including phone, text or e-mail. Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Students in the Seaford School District are serious about making healthy choices, and that commitment was celebrated during Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 26-30. Schools took part in the national drug-abuse prevention campaign and this year’s theme was “Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free!” Students participated in activities and discussions focused on healthy living. At Seaford Middle School, lessons took place during physical education classes. Social worker Amanda Smith talked about the history and purpose of Red Ribbon Week, while physical education teachers addressed the consequences of drug use. Students signed a virtual pledge that they would live drug-free lives. There were also themed dress-up days, and students and staff kicked off the week by wearing red. They teamed up against drugs on Tuesday with sports jerseys, followed their dreams on Wednesday with pajama day, showed their Seaford Pride with green and white on Thursday and didn’t let drugs scare away their futures while wearing Halloween costumes to conclude the week. Seaford Harbor Elementary School social worker Sharon Klein and psychologist Amanda Rinehart created Flipgrid videos with her Red Ribbon Week lessons that teachers could play each day for their students. Topics included bravery, gratitude and making healthy choices. There were themed dress-up days throughout the week from wearing bright colors to symbolize their bright futures, to being “crazy about being drug free” by wearing crazy socks.

Taking up the saxophone was no accident for Seaford High School senior Mary Pecoraro who decided to follow in her father’s footsteps. Now, her dedication to the instrument has earned her selection to the New York State School Music Association’s All-State festival in December. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the annual music conference will be held online this year and Mary will take part in a virtual concert that will be recorded at the conclusion of the scheduled rehearsals. The first instrument she ever played was a flute, which was given to her as a gift. But when time came to select an instrument to play in the elementary school band, her father’s background as a saxophone player

at Seaford High School swayed her decision. She played the alto sax beginning in fourth grade at Manor Elementary School, then switched to the baritone sax in seventh grade when there was an opening in the middle school jazz band. “When I heard my dad had played that instrument, I was so inspired,” she said. “When I could first join the band, at the top of my list was saxophone.” In high school, Mary has been a member of the jazz, marching, pep and pit bands as well as the field show which performs in the Newsday Marching Band festival and in halftime show at home football games. She and her father, James, also belong to the Seaford Community Band, which performs annual winter and spring concerts at

the high school. Mary has been selected to Nassau Music Educators Association All-County music festivals six times, as early as fifth grade. The pieces she has performed for All-County and All-State judges have increased in difficulty every year, with her most recent audition piece consisting of six pages of music. It also helped boost her confidence about performing in front of others and that comfort helped her take her music skills to the next level. When she was told by band teacher Anthony Romeo that she was selected as an All-State musician, Mary said she was thrilled to receive such a prestigious honor. “I worked so hard,” she said. “I felt like all that effort in put in really paid off.”
