We are extremely excited to celebrate the achievements of these incredible young women and acknowledge the positive impact they have had on communities throughout the United States,” said Girl Scouts of Nassau County Chief Executive Officer Donna Ceravolo. “We are immensely grateful to both Long Island University for hosting with us, and our two sponsors Northwell Health System and Wells Fargo for making this event possible.” During the event there will be two workshop tracks - one for adults and one for girls. The adult track will cover topics such as Finding Balance, The Power of Acceptance and Social Media Presence. The girls’ track will focus on Girl Empowerment, Applying to College and a self-image workshop titled, Everything Isn’t

The attendees will also hear from renowned speakers Shefali Tsabary, a clinical psychologist and acclaimed author; Sara Intonato, a self-made entrepreneur; and Sylvia Acevedo, an engineer and the interim CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. Dr. Tsabary will give the keynote address. The event was made possible by a partnership with Long Island University. LIU has hosted Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s annual meetings as well as Adult Recognition events. Additionally, LIU has provided financial support for previous events including the council’s Annual Luncheon. Additional sponsors include Northwell Health, formerly known as North Shore LIJ University Hospital, and Wells Fargo. Northwell, which will provide $20,000 toward the event, has a long a history of supporting Girl Scouts, including a partnership that allowed 20 Girl Scout Seniors to attend a full week of Career Exploration Camp at the hospital to be

immersed in the many career opportunities within the medical industry. Northwell has sponsored Girl Scouts of Nassau County events in the past, including the Annual Luncheon. Wells Fargo, who will provide a $10,000 sponsorship, has also donated to the Council on numerous occasions, notably, a $10,000 grant to support the Girl Scout’s Entrepreneurial

Also instrumental in making the event a success were fifth-grade teachers Jenn Adelstein, Chris Feiler, Lori Lopiano and Jacklyn Hoffman, and Principal Deborah Emmerich and Assistant Principal Mary-Ellen Kakalos. “I was thinking about the immigrant families in our own schools and their plight of not being able to speak the language,” Kaplan explained. “CARECEN’s mission fits perfectly with what the students have been learning and reading in ‘Esperanza Rising’. Through this experience and what they were taught in the classroom, students learned to open their hearts to what’s going on in the real world and show empathy for others, and that’s really important as well. They are growing up in a different society and this encourages them to help others and to be more sensitive to other people’s situations. Our goal to provide the students with a unique perspective of the sensitive reallife topic of the struggles of immigrants and human rights was successful,” she added. “The students questions were well thought out, relevant and showed excellent critical thinking skills.” CARECEN representative are available to speak at schools. In an assembly described by Seaford Manor fifth graders as “awesome,” “cool” and “a lot of fun,” students logged onto iPads to take part in an online game using the web-based application Kahoots. The game was created by representative of the Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN) to reinforce Human Rights lessons that were taught in the classroom. Divided into teams, students answered questions such as “What is the Human Declaration of Rights?” “Why is the Human Declaration of Rights important?” and “What can be done to enforce these rights?” They also examined how rights are exercised and violated, and learned about CARECEN’s mission to help immigrants assimilate into this country. “I learned more than I knew from the classroom, “asserted fifth grader Faith Scheafer. “It really gave you something to think about,” added classmate Lorelai Mucciolo. The assembly was a culminating event to a social studies unit on Human Rights where students addressed social challenges, such as discrimination, difficulty with housing, equal pay, land ownership, and marriage, and more. To illustrate these challenges, students read the book, “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan, a novel about a family from Mexico and the human rights obstacles she and her family face when they immigrate to America. Students also studied how laws are developed in democratic societies to maintain order, provide security

Through a series of themes from “Team Up Against Drugs” to “Don’t Let Drugs Spoil Your Dreams,” students in the Seaford School District showed their support for the national prevention awareness campaign Red Ribbon Week and pledged to lead healthy lifestyles void of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. The national theme “YOLO. Be Drug Free,” reminds students that “you only live once” so it’s important to make good decisions. At the middle school, students signed pledges to be drug-free that hung on huge red ribbons in the cafeteria and listened to a multi-media assembly program about

making positive choices. At Harbor Elementary School, age-appropriate lessons were delivered by the Child Abuse Prevention Services, the Nassau County Police Department and the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Topics such as “Safety Rules!,” “Cybersmartz,” and “Too Good for Drugs” were presented. Nassau County Police Detective Pam Stark spoke to fifth graders about being healthy and making good choices, physical education teacher Nicole Nicholson and fifth-grade students gave special presentations to first and fourth graders on

November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

All-County Festival Thirty-three musically talented students were selected to represent Seaford School District at the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Music Festival at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The concert dates are January 8th, 13th, 14th and 15th. The students were chosen from hundreds of applicants to take part in the All-County concerts based on evaluations from the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and teacher recommendations. “These dedicated students represent some of the most accomplished musicians at their grade levels in the county,” said Barbara Sherwin, music chairperson for the district. “We are delighted to have them come together with peers throughout the area to share a similar appreciation for music.”

Seaford High School senior Scott Wilson, an All-State alternate; Christopher Ho and Kayla Marino were selected to perform in Mixed Chorus. MindUp Foundation, Kids in the House and many educational and transformational centers around the world. Sara Intonato is an entrepreneur, yoga guru and motivational speaker. As the Conference’s lunchtime speaker, she will share her belief that positive change in the world begins on an individual level. Ms. Intonato graduated from Boston University having already completed her 200-hour Hatha Yoga

certification; today, she is an authorized Level 2 Ashtanga Yoga Teacher. Conducting workshops across the world, Ms. Intonato spreads a message of living in the moment and finding spiritual peace. A proud Girl Scout, engineer, rocket scientist, and advocate for girls and Girl Scouts, Silvia Acevedo, credits her Girl Scout experience with propelling her to success in the corporate and philanthropic sectors.

Ms. Acevedo will open the reception portion of the Conference speaking on the courage, confidence and character her Girl Scouts experience gave her, vital attributed as she entered the engineering field at a time when those of her gender and ethnicity didn’t. She earned a master’s degree in engineering from Stanford University before serving as president and CEO of CommuniCard, LLC, a firm that used innovative technology to

harness market trends. Ms. Acevedo also serves as a strategic consultant to companies that wish to use technology to capitalize on demographic trends and is a fervent supporter of Hispanic girls’ and women’s causes and female involvement in the sciences. The Conference will celebrate the 100th year of the Gold Award. Gold Award projects have positively impacted girls’ lives, their communities, and the world for a

century. Approximately 1 million Girl Scout alumni have developed Gold Award projects that addressed local or global issues. After identifying an area of interest, a successful Gold Award recipient performs hours of research and prepares a project proposal to be submitted for feedback and approval to the Girl Scouts Council before embarking on her project. The Girl Scout presents her final conclusions as the last step of the journey.
