The oldest branch of the U.S. military, the National Guard serves as a complementary force to active duty. Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations. The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary. One Island Giving Day who live, work and study in our communities. This is the second annual “One Island Giving Day” and is a legacy of the Amy and Horace Hagedorn Foundation that supported numerous Long Island nonprofits until it closed last year. Build Your Own Chair “Either I will ﬁnd a way, or I will make one.” - Philip Sidney When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge. I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry. When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers. Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I

landed is still burned on my brain. It was one of the cast members from the very first season of The Apprentice. At the time, thirteen years ago, it felt like quite a feat to get anyone notable to speak with me for an interview. My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there. The ball was starting to roll. After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position. For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again. Time went by (ﬁve years to be exact), when I had an epiphany. Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.

And if I created it once, I could create it again. Once again, I dipped into my bucket of fairy dust and declared that I was going to build a syndicated interview column from scratch. In fact, it was my New Year’s resolution nearly one year ago. I didn’t know exactly how I would re-build these important relationships, get media outlets to come on board or get anyone to say yes to an interview, but I knew I was going to do it. Well, here we are, ten months later, and my portfolio of published and syndicated interviews is more substantial now than it was eight years ago before I ventured out on my own. My question for you to contemplate this week is this: Are you currently waiting for permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do? Is there something creative inside of you that wants to come out, but, “no one will give you the chance”? If a seat at the table is alluding you, it may be time to roll up your sleaves and build your own chair.

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books! Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected! They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!

Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%! If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location. You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Also, if you are interested in supporting their mission and donating financially, you can simply donate to their cause on their website at www.TheBookFairies.org/Donate. The Seaford School District marked Red Ribbon Week, a national drug awareness campaign, with activities throughout the four schools from Oct. 22-26. Lessons were tailored for each age group to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage positive decision-making. Seaford Harbor Elementary School social worker Sharon Klein visited second-grade classrooms throughout the week for the Real Heroes are Drug Free presentation. She told students to surround themselves with people who are positive influences and also reminded them to be good role models for others. Each child picked someone he or she looks up to and completed a “My Hero” activity sheet. The Students Against Destructive Decisions club spelled out “Drug Free” in red ribbons on the fence in front of the school, to show their commitment to making healthy choices.

Because this year’s theme was “Life is a journey, travel drug free,” all students signed a map of the world on the Harbor Travels Drug Free bulletin board, created by the PTA. Seaford Manor Elementary School students participated in a ribbon decorating project in art classes, sang “Too Smart to Start” in music, had character education lessons in library and learned about good choices for their bodies in physical education. Other activities included kindness rock painting and theme days. Tom Murphy, a.k.a. Mr. Incredible, visited both elementary schools and the middle school for the Sweethearts and Heroes assembly, which focused on bullying. At Manor and Harbor, he told students how to conduct bully drills through the ABC method: A— get away, B — be a buddy, C — call an adult for help. His middle school presentation focused on

cyberbullying because students are at the age where they have increased access to technology and social media. He interacted with the students during their lunch periods and also hosted an evening workshop for parents. Seaford Middle School students and staff wore orange on Oct. 24 for Unity Day. The day was devoted to acceptance, friendship and kindness. Students also learned the importance of being upstanders by doing their part to stop bullying. Members of Seaford High School’s SADD club handed out red ribbons to students who signed a pledge to make good choices and remain drug free. All students and staff were asked to wear red to school on Oct. 26. The week concluded with the Unity Walk for the entire Seaford community on Friday evening at the high school track.

Personalized Approach to Art The art room at Seaford Harbor Elementary School is a place for creativity and imagination. Art teacher Christine Donnelly has adopted a new philosophy for instruction that empowers each child to discover his or her internal artist. Instead of assigning students projects throughout the year, the young artists get to choose. The TAB approach — Teaching for Artistic Behaviors — is about providing children with knowledge, materials and support, and then letting them create. “This is their studio,” Ms. Donnelly said. “The students have to come up with the idea of what they are going to work on, what materials they are going to use and how they are going to use them. They bring their own artistic flair.” Ms. Donnelly said she introduced the concept late last year, and this is the first full year of running a TAB classroom.

To begin the year, she opened up different stations one at a time, such as drawing, painting, collage and sculpting, so students could familiarize themselves with different materials and techniques. Each opening featured an “around the room” day in which students rotated through different centers focusing on that specific medium. Then they were able to work on projects independently to apply the newly learned techniques. For collage days, students had access to paper with different colors, patterns and textures, paper bags, puzzle pieces, newspapers and magazines, colored masking tape and more. Tools included fancy-edge scissors, hole punches that make different shapes and glue sponges. During the summer, Ms. Donnelly attended a weeklong institute with art teachers from across Long Island and around the country at the Massachusetts College of

TAB also provides time for them to gather together at the end of class and share their work. The children keep their finished projects in their art portfolios. The eight Studio Habits of Mind hang on Ms. Donnelly’s wall: develop craft, engage and persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, stretch and explore, and understand art worlds. Another inspirational poster simply says, “You are an artist.”

(NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority. The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a sixpoint winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather. “Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency when the weather takes a

sudden turn for the worse.” Six-Point Vehicle Check 1. Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old. 2. Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however. Surprisingly, full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze

point than when mixed with water. 3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads. 4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop. 5. Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals

and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car. 6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly

clean your windshield. In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry

food snacks and needed medication. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. minds and realize that even in ninth grade they are preparing for college and need to take this process seriously.” Freshman Chelsea Russo, who visited Quinnipiac, said that college representatives emphasized the value of a well-rounded high school education, including enrollment in challenging courses and participation in extracurricular activities.
