The current sophomore class was part of the first group of students to receive laptops, so last year ninth grade teachers familiarized themselves with the digital classroom environment and learned the best ways to incorporate instructional technology into their lessons. That allowed them to hit the ground running this year. English teacher Justin McCormack said that the Personalized Digital Learning Initiative creates a more authentic workspace for students to prepare them for the technology-centric world they will experience beyond high school. He also said it creates a greater level of engagement in the content, particularly when students study centuriesold texts. Recently, his ninth graders have been reading Shakespeare and are able to take notes directly on their digital copies and translate text for meaning. “Technology is the world they know,” he said. “Everything they know is digital, so taking something from hundreds of years ago and putting it in a medium they are comfortable with makes it more accessible.”

Math teacher Jennifer Wemssen said that she provides her geometry students with digital copies of all handouts. Students also submit their homework online and take their quizzes on the computer, which are sent to her for grading with one click. “It gives me more time to spend on teaching them new material and answering their questions,” she said. Spanish teacher Robert Maloney said that a digital tool makes note-taking much less mundane. He can also use games, like Kahoot, to help students build their Spanish vocabulary. The competitive game feature gets all students actively involved as they submit their responses directly from their devices, and then can see the winner at the end. By next year, all students at Seaford High School and Seaford Middle School will have take-home devices. The Personalized Digital Learning Initiative also provides fourth and fifth graders with laptops that can be used in class. Kindergarten through third grade classes share iPad carts at each level.

With laptops available around the clock for learning, ninth graders at Seaford High School are using technology in new ways to enhance their education. The second wave of the Seaford School District’s Personalized Digital Learning Initiative put HP devices into the hands of all freshmen at the beginning of the year. Tyler Koenig said that having a laptop is a tremendous benefit because he can keep all of his work on the computer where it is easy to access. He can sort his work by subject and find anything with just a few clicks. Tyler said also doesn’t mind having fewer books and papers to carry around. Another benefit, Tyler said, is having the Internet at his fingertips when teachers give a research assignment. “You have the computer in front of you, so you can look something up,” he said. “It’s just convenient and it speeds everything up.” Gianna Maringo said that having a laptop has made her classes more exciting and engaging. She said she likes the interactive games teachers use to help students memorize content. Gianna also finds note-taking easier with a

Healthy Back to School Lunches Packing the kids’ lunches for school means you have control over which foods they are eating. Parents can manage nutritious meals even when the kids are at school. According to the American Heart Association, American kids consume 35-50 percent of their daily calories while in school. So, healthy lunches can have a big impact on children’s health through good nutrition. Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels. Nutrition can go a long way toward preventing these illnesses in children. Here are some budgetfriendly, creative ideas from the American Heart Association to help keep kids happy and healthy at lunchtime: Make a Smarter Sandwich While some kids prefer the same thing every day, many kids want variety in their lunches. Sandwiches are easy, portable and kidfriendly. · Use different breads like 100% whole-wheat tortilla

wraps (choose wraps low in saturated fat and made with no hydrogenated oils) or 100% whole-wheat pita pockets. ·In addition to lettuce and tomato, try shredded carrot or zucchini and sliced cucumbers, peppers, or apple or pear with a turkey sandwich. ·Try avocado or hummus as a swap for cheese or mayo. ·Try a leftover grilled chicken in your sandwich as a healthy swap for lunch meat. Love those Leftovers Think about using the leftovers from a family favorite dinner for a next day lunch. Use a thermos to keep foods hot or cold until the lunch bell rings. The prepared/packaged versions of these foods sometimes have a lot of sodium, so make them homemade with little or no salt, or compare nutrition facts of similar products and choose the ones with less sodium. ·Soup - tomato, vegetable or bean ·Chili (vegetarian or made with lean or extra lean ground chicken) ·Spaghetti or curly pasta salad (whole wheat with veggies and chicken added) ·Bean casserole or beans & rice with vegetables. Let Them Dunk Sometimes it’s OK to let your kids play with their

food, especially when they are getting extra nutrition. Try packing one of these fun dunks with dippers: ·Apple and pear slices to dip into low-fat plain yogurt or peanut butter. Cortland, Empire and Ginger Gold apples brown at a slower rate than other apples. · Carrot, celery and sweet pepper strips to dip into hummus, fresh salsa or homemade bean dip. ·Whole-grain, lowsodium, low-fat crackers* or slices of grilled tofu (a soybean product) to dunk into soup. Avoid packing sugary drinks like “power” drinks, soda, or sugar-added juices to your kids’ lunchboxes, or home meals. Water or school purchased milk are great options to reduce sugar in the diet. Let the crunchy snacks be fruit or cut veggies, not fried, fatty chips. Get Them Involved When kids help pack their lunches, they’re more likely to eat that lunch! On nights you have a bit more time, like a Sunday night, have them choose which piece of fruit or what type of whole grain bread they want and let them assemble their lunch. The Seaford School District’s Oct. 16 Board of Education Meeting featured numerous recognitions on many levels. In honor of Board of Education Recognition Month, students from each school building described and highlighted educational programs that the board has supported. Seaford Harbor Elementary School students shared a drum performance and expressed the value of the drums and other instruments that the district has purchased to enhance students’ talents. They provided each board member with a tambourine as a token of appreciation. Next, members of the student council from Seaford Manor School presented on new initiatives such as Project Lead the Way, extra help, new basketball courts, Lion’s Quest mental health curriculum, laptops and

iPads, and the Makerspace Club. They gave gifts to the board members as symbols of gratitude. Seaford Middle School Principal Daniel Smith introduced the new Table Tennis Club, Art Club and Sign Language Club. Students from the Sign Language club took the spotlight on stage and signed their names and messages of thanks to the board. They bestowed a photo collage thank you poster to the board. Seaford High School students Joseph Cain and Kelly Wylie thanked the board for its continuous support by presenting the gift of a clock made by the woodworking class. High School student Anthony Sinisgalli received a special recognition for his commitment and dedication for serving as the district representative on the New York State Office of Special Education

Students Say ‘Thank You’ Youth Advisory Panel, which advises the Office of Special Education on proposed policies related to the education of students with disabilities. “I am a part of a group of students with disabilities informing the Commissioner Christopher Soriano about our experiences and what life is like having a disability,” Anthony said. “I could not have learned without my amazing teachers here in the Seaford School District.” He also thanked his administrators, family and friends for helping him over the years. Also at this meeting, Harbor teachers Pamela Brinkman, Antonella Denk and Elizabeth Vaeth were granted tenure. Attendees applauded all honorees and celebrated the accomplishments that are taking place in the Seaford schools.
