An international program that dates back more than a century is making its return to Seaford Harbor Elementary School this fall. The School Safety Patrol is officially back and 10 fifth graders were sworn in as safety officers during a brief ceremony on Oct. 19. Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer said that Harbor once had a safety patrol, as evidenced by a picture she recently found from 1965. It is unknown when it disbanded, but Ms. Schozer said that restarting it has been a goal. School Safety Patrol, founded in 1920, is sponsored by AAA and exists at schools in more

than 30 countries. Harbor will follow the safety patrol operations manual. Ms. Schozer said that in the beginning, safety patrol members will have assigned posts inside the school during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. They will help enforce safety rules and guide students to their destinations. “It builds a sense of community, leadership and responsibility,” she said. “The safety patrol members are helping their fellow Harbor students stay safe.” Each safety patrol member will receive a sash and a badge. They will all have a chance to serve as captain, lieutenant

Safety Patrol Is Reborn and sergeant, with extra responsibilities during the weeks they are assigned those leadership posts. There will also be monthly meetings. Ms. Schozer added that there was an application process for prospective safety patrol members, and two students were chosen from each fifth grade class. Parents were on hand for the outdoor installation ceremony, in which the inductees recited a pledge. Virtual Thyroid Cancer Support Group ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors, is affiliated with ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc.; a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization of thyroid cancer survivors, family members, and health care professionals. We are dedicated to support, education, and communication for thyroid cancer survivors, their families and friends.

We also sponsor Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, year-round awareness activities, and thyroid cancer research fundraising and research grants. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.

How To Help Veterans In Need

Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries. Many veterans in need are

not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various

ways. • Visit a veterans hospital. Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity. • Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery

‘You Call The Shots’ - United Way Of Long Island Receives Grant From CDC Foundation United Way of Long Island is being funded to support effective community outreach centered on communities of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in order to share accurate, culturally appropriate information about the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines as well as link adults to vaccine services. United Way, with funding through the CDC Foundation, will work to increase local COVID-19 vaccination rates through the initiative You Call the Shots—Protecting Communities, Empowering Families and Stopping Myths. United Way’s program addresses the inequities in vaccination coverage that exist across different racial and ethnic populations on Long Island by improving access and raising knowledge through educational campaigns to decrease hesitancy and overcome refusal to vaccinate. Nassau and Suffolk Counties have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with over 374,000

cases and 6,452 deaths, and residents continue to suffer the consequences: severe illness, job loss, decrease in income, unstable housing, separation and isolation. These numbers, in combination with vaccine data, illustrate the critical need for increased vaccine coverage. Compared to the overall Long Island population, vaccination rates differ greatly among African Americans and Latinos: 6.4% of African Americans and 12.6% of Latinos have received at least one dose. The CDC Foundation helps the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) save and improve lives by unleashing the power of collaboration between CDC, philanthropies, corporations, organizations and individuals to protect the health, safety and security of America and the world. Since January 2020, the CDC Foundation through the support of its donors has addressed a wide variety of critical needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work

includes providing personal protective equipment for frontline responders; care kits for schools, jails and the unhoused; studies examining the impact of COVID-19; work to strengthen communities and community-based organizations to improve vaccination uptake and address misinformation; projects focused on health more than 100 projects focused on health equity; and much more. United Way of Long Island’s You Call the Shots will focus its work in six communities designated by New York State as high priority for increasing vaccination rates: Elmont, Hempstead, Freeport, Huntington Station, Brentwood and Bay Shore. The organization will utliize its existing partnerships with corporate entities, government, labor, community leaders, school systems, health providers and over 100 funded communitybased agencies to increase vaccine confidence and uptake through:

Bilingual community navigators who will connect Long Islanders to vaccination sites and providers. They will visit and speak with residents about the importance and safety of vaccines, while providing information on vaccination sites and availability. Navigators will work with state and local health departments to ensure pop-up clinics are located in areas where and when needed, as well as schedule appointments, arrange transportation when necessary, and provide facts about COVID-19 and the vaccine in multiple languages. Leveraging trusted community-level spokespersons to provide consistent, factual and compelling science-based messages in support of vaccination. Spokespersons will be trained on COVID-19 facts and equipped with compelling scientific information to engage with residents and diseminate information through local media outlets, social

media, faith-based venues, community events and other community-based, culturally appropriate venues. Building trust with community members to address the concerns people have about COVID-19. To increase confidence in and encourage vaccination, United Way of Long Island spokespersons and health care partners will help combat misinformation, stop myths and build public trust through community outreach and education forums. Funding for this effort is made possible through a subaward from the CDC

Foundation and is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) financial assistance award totaling $25,660,048 with 100 percent funding from CDC/HHS. Residents are reminded to update or develop their Family Emergency Plan, Emergency Go-Kits and Family & Friends Sheltering Plan, as storms can quickly evolve into dangerous situations requiring quick action and sometimes evacuation. An updated and accurate Family Emergency Plan is a key component to planning for Hurricane Season. The unique needs of family members, such as the elderly, infants, those with access and functional needs and any pets should be considered. Residents should inquire about what plans are in place at work and schools in case of emergency. After all of the information is collected, gather your family to discuss how the plan works. Practice your plan at least twice a year and update it according to any issues that arise. Residents should assembly an Emergency Go-Kit, keep it by their front door in a duffel bag and include enough supplies for everyone in the household for five days, including: First aid kit. Pack a “how to” guide and masks as well. Essential prescription and nonprescription items and medical information. Battery-powered flashlight and radio (or crank radio), extra batteries and a 12-hour glow stick. A change of clothes, plus rainwear, sturdy shoes and protective gloves for everyone. Personal items, eyeglasses and personal care items. Important documents in a waterproof container: drivers’ licenses, wills, birth/marriage certificates, insurance policies, deed or lease papers, recent tax returns, credit card and bank account numbers, Social Security cards, Passport and home inventory list.

Make sure you have special items for infants, elderly persons, pets or loved ones with special needs. Residents can also safeguard their pets by preparing a Pet Go-Kit, which should include: Your pets’ names, address and phone number. Your name, address, phone and cell number. Emergency contact friend or family. Your veterinarian’s name and contact info. Important documents. Medical records. Medications with specific care instructions and behavioral problems. First Aid kit. Current photos. Sturdy leash, collar or harness, muzzles. Paper towels for cleanup. Food and bottled water (three-day supply). Manual can opener and bowls. Water purification tablets. Toys and other comfort items. Treats, brushes and combs. Newspapers and plastic bags. Residents should develop a Family & Friends Sheltering Plan in the event they are asked to evacuate their home. Be prepared, not scared, start thinking about your plan today.” Homeowners should plan for the possibility of power outages as heavy rains and wind results in downed branches and trees which can knock out power lines. To report downed trees or stranded cars during the storm, please call Public Safety at (516) 677-5350. With the loss of power comes the use of generators. Residents are reminded that generators should never be run inside the home or garage due to the dangers of carbon monoxide. Generators used in enclosed spaces can lead to death. The Peace Corps is Recruiting Volunteers from Diverse Backgrounds (StatePoint) The Peace Corps, established in 1961, partners with communities abroad to develop sustainable solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges at the grassroots level. While all volunteers returned home in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency is working to return to service and is now actively recruiting volunteers of backgrounds historically underrepresented in the organization, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans. “As part of our mission, we seek to reflect the rich diversity of the United States abroad, bringing different perspectives and solutions to development issues in the countries we serve,” says Carol Spahn, acting director of the Peace Corps. “We also seek to create inclusion – a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility and fairness; and leverages diversity so that

all individuals are able to contribute to their full potential.” If you’re interested in Peace Corps service, here’s what to know. New Challenges While Peace Corps service is demanding for every volunteer, being from a diverse ethnic background can introduce additional challenges, according to those who have served. “I had to deal with people’s expectations about Americans looking a certain way. About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, Mexican-American Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively, instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says

Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education,

health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. I also translated most of my CPR and first aid materials into Kyrgyz,” says Lee, who notes that, “Volunteering opens so many doors in the
