Kindergartners Grow Their Knowledge Of Weather

News 12 Meteorologist Alex Calamia visited Seaford Harbor Elementary School on Oct. 11, teaching kindergartners about the weather as well as one of his favorite hobbies – gardening. Mr. Calamia showed students pictures of different types of weather, then quizzed them on what attire people typically

wear if it’s hot or cold, or sunny, raining or snowing. He also talked about how gardening is impacted by the weather. Students learned how different fruits grow, including bananas, pineapples and watermelon. Other facts he shared with students were how rainbows are formed and how trees provide oxygen

to humans and animals as the “lungs of the planet.” Throughout the year, kindergartners will be making their own weather forecasts, so Mr. Calamia’s visit gave them insight into how to predict weather and collect data. As a thank you, students presented him with a card and a plant.

Strategies For Coping With The Holidays

Coping with the Holidays, a free forum sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, will be held on Thursday, November 9 from 12 noon to 1 pm on zoom. Oncology social worker Cara Livoti, LCSW, offers expertise in the ways individuals can utilize healthy coping strategies during the holiday season. Participants will also learn about the multitude of support services offered from both hospital and

community based social workers. Ms. Livoti has been a part of the NYU Langone care team since 2011 with extensive experience in supporting not only her patients, but their caregivers and loved ones. In 2021 she began working specifically with the breast cancer patient population at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center. Ms. Livoti is wellversed in the resources available through NYU PCC and the community for her breast cancer patients and takes great

pride in providing comprehensive psychosocial care to those with which she works. This free event is sponsored by The Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer and Northwell Health Cancer Institute. Rain didn’t stop the Seaford community from turning out for this year’s homecoming celebration, which featured a parade and football game on October 14. Seaford High School was the destination for a parade that began at the public

library. Undeterred by the wet weather, onlookers donned their green and popped open their umbrellas as they gathered along Washington Avenue and Keily Drive. The parade, led by the Seaford Fire Department, featured Board of Education

trustees, administrators and teachers, the high school class banners, youth sports leagues and scouts, the homecoming court and cheerleaders. All four schools were represented in the event that showcases Seaford pride. The grand marshals

for this year’s parade were players and coaches from the 1998 Vikings football team. The district celebrated the 25th anniversary of the team’s Long Island championship. They were also honored at halftime. During halftime, the

homecoming court was introduced, featuring Taylor Broderick, Katherine Hoehn, Katie Kofod, Kieran Calderaro, Ethan Goldberger, Anthony James and Erik Zhang. Erik and Katherine were crowned the king and queen. Nominees must be

Bethpage Turkey Drive – The Largest Food Drive On Long Island – Aims To Collect 4,000 Turkeys And 40,000 Pounds Of Food On Friday, November 17

The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM at Bethpage’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Long Island’s largest oneday food drive which to date, has donated more than 45,000 turkeys and over 200,000 pounds of food over 15 years to Island Harvest which helps supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to families in our community. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. Bethpage’s Drive Through Donation Lanes will allow residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. The donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 foodinsecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelfstable milk (please, no glass containers). For the first time, Bethpage is issuing a Corporate Challenge encouraging local businesses and organizations to donate the largest amount of frozen turkeys and nonperishables and then drop off their donations on November 17. The business that provides the largest donation will be

sent an ice cream truck to their location for all employees to enjoy. To join the challenge, Long Island businesses and organizations can sign up here. “Bethpage is focused on enriching the lives of the communities we serve and we are able to accomplish this by collaborating and partnering with businesses across Long Island. To help enhance services for veterans, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is hosting a free educational workshop for those who serve and care for veterans, especially those living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and dementia. The workshop, “An Exploration of Brain Health and Trauma,” which includes training from AFA and the New York City Department of Veterans’ Services, will take place on Thursday, November 2, from 8:30

am to 12:00 pm, at The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights (21 Clark Street, Brooklyn). Individuals can register through AFA’s website. TBIs, which can be sustained in both combat and non-combat military service, PTSD, or being a prisoner of war can all increase a veteran’s chances of developing dementia, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans living with dementia can experience a re-emergence of traumatic memories as the brain

deteriorates, along with their coping skills and the ability to suppress traumatic memories. According to the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services, there are more than 150,000 veterans living in NYC. “Every veteran makes sacrifices and puts themselves in harm’s way in service to our country. During the course of their service, veterans may experience chronic stress, TBIs, or PTSD, especially if they served in combat. All of that impacts their mental health and increases

their risk of developing dementia,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, SIFI, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Understanding the impact of chronic stress and trauma on brain health, especially for veterans with dementia, and knowing how to help veterans when traumatic memories cause them distress is essential for those who serve veterans, so that they can provide the level of support our veterans need and very much deserve.” The training workshop will detail the impact of

chronic stress, TBIs, and PTSD on brain health, the relationship between these factors and dementia, and vital information on resources, services and non-pharmacological approaches available to help. Speakers will include Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, SIFI, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services, and Lauren D’Mello, Ed.D., MHC, Executive Director of the New York City Department of Veterans’ Services’ Mental Health and Care Coordination

Memory screenings are an important part of a good health and wellness routine for all of us. As part of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month this November, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is reminding everyone to prioritize their brain health and get a memory screening. AFA offers free memory screenings every weekday through its National Memory Screening Program, with no minimum age or insurance prerequisites, through secure videoconference technology. Individuals can learn more or request a screening appointment by clicking here or contacting AFA at 866-2328484. “Annual screenings are important, including for our brains, which is why everyone should make getting a memory screening a priority during Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and throughout the year,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Just as we regularly check other facets of our health, we should all get a checkup from the neck up, regardless of whether or not we are having memory problems.” “You are never too young or too

old to get a memory screening and be more proactive about your brain health,” said Donna de Levante Raphael, Director of AFA’s National Memory Screening Program. “Many people don’t think about their cognitive health when they get their regular medical checkups. If you are 65 years or older, a memory screening is a part of your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit. It is very important to make sure you keep your mind sharp, and there are many ways to do that in order to combat cognitive decline. I always remind people that the first step is to get a screening to see if there might be any memory issues. It is better to know early rather than later.” Alzheimer’s disease currently affects more than 6.2 million Americans, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that number will more than double by 2060.
