Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day. My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes. I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient. People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”
What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed. It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing. Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you. Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell. Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.
Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain. Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players. Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime. Go do something you enjoy. No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour. Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

Lantino will be representing the United States in two international competitions within the next year. Lantino has been practicing Taekwondo since he was four years old. His training sessions are four to six hours per day, and he trains a minimum of six days per week. Lantino’s Taekwondo Masters, Andrew H.J. Oh and Soon Kwon Kang, of Champions Martial Arts (with locations in Amityville, Massapqua, Bellmore, East Meadow, Wantagh and Copiague) had a great deal to do with his success. Lantino has been able to maintain a 90 and above average in school despite his long martial arts training hours. Besides the hours of training locally, he also attends National Team training camp in Texas. His upcoming agenda includes competitions in Las Vegas, Nevada, and in Germany. More international competitions will be announced later this year.

The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health, expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States, annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island. This October, The Maurer Foundation has schedueld 132 breast health programs, reaching 3,300 people with life-saving information on breast selfexams, breast cancer risk factors, risk reduction, myths, facts, mammogram guidelines and more! It was a clear and crisp fall afternoon for Seaford High School’s annual Homecoming celebration on Oct. 13. Morning rain cleared out just in time for the noon parade, which traveled from Seaford’s downtown to the high school football field. It was just the beginning of an excitement-filled day. The parade grand marshal, chosen by the Seaford Booster Club, was Skip Lawrence, who taught physical education in the district for 38 years. He coached middle school and junior varsity football, wrestling, baseball and soccer, and remained a volunteer wrestling coach in his retirement. Known as the “ultimate Viking fan,” he was honored

Flood-prone communities on Long Island will undergo infrastructure projects and storm preparation as they continue to recover from the years-long aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene, and Tropical Storm Lee. The Town of Oyster Bay, which includes parts of the 9th Assembly District in Massapequa, Massapequa Park, and South Farmingdale, is receiving $2.1 million for permanent generators at emergency and community facilities. During the selection process, members of the Massapequa Committee voiced their concerns over power outages at community centers, emergency stations, and of course homes and businesses throughout the area. “It’s not if, but when the next storm hits the South Shore of Long Island,” Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino (D-Oyster Bay/ Babylon/Islip) said. “The State has to do everything in our power to protect our homeowners and small businesses, who have already suffered enough in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
The power outages were just as devastating as the storm itself. This grant of $2.1 million from GOSR’s NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program will ensure that emergency shelters and fire stations in the Town of Oyster Bay, including
Massapequa and Massapequa Park, have reliable power.” The funding is part of more than $41.1 million in NY Rising Community Reconstruction projects that will begin this fall across Long Island and New York State.
