The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. Visitors of this homegrown haunt have only good things to say! Here are some of their reviews:

programs. They also got to eat at a college dining hall and stop at the campus bookstore, with many purchasing some gear from the respective schools they visited. Matthew Khurtsilava said he learned that college offers students greater independence, but with that comes greater responsibility. Karl Leudesdorff noted the importance of working hard now so he and his classmates are accepted into the colleges of their choice. “What you do now affect what you do then,” he said. Kerry Wise said she was excited to learn about the extracurricular activities available at colleges, and the ability to take courses

on topics that interest her, even if they are outside of her major. Guidance Chairwoman Joanna Scordo said that planning these trips is a collaborative effort of the administrators, guidance department staff and college officials. The goal is to make it a meaningful experience for students and spark discussions between students and their

families about their posthigh school plans. “Continuing to explore colleges during the remainder of their high school careers is very important for them,” Ms. Scordo said. “We want them to visit a lot of colleges, to see the differences and determine which college is the best fit for them.”

Even though college is a few years away, it is definitely on the minds of freshmen at Seaford High School. More than 120 ninth graders took part in college visits on Oct. 16, an annual tradition to help students learn about the steps they need to take in high school to prepare themselves for higher education. Buses departed Seaford High School for one of three destinations – Iona College, LIU Post and Manhattanville College, with about 45 students on each trip. The ninth graders participated in information sessions with admissions representatives, campus tours led by college students and workshops about different academic

Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better.

4. Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer. 5. Manage moisture. Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections. The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers. 6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.

A tradition that has spanned nearly a quarter century continued on Oct. 18 as Seaford Manor Elementary School hosted its annual Autumn Classic. One grade at a time, students ventured out to the high school track where they could walk, run or jog. Physical education teachers Ken Botti and Dianne Dunn coordinated the event, which has been a fall staple for 24 years. The teachers said the Autumn Classic continually evolves

and in the last few years they have added fitness stations around the track including hurdles to jump over and hula hoops and ladders to walk through. Family members were invited to join students in their laps around the track, as Mr. Botti and Ms. Dunn explained that exercise is more enjoyable when done with other people. They said the goal of the event, which kicks off the fitness and nutrition unit in physical education classes, is to encourage lifelong

exercise habits. “Cardio is any way, shape or form is important,” Mr. Botti said, noting that students were encouraged to complete as many laps around the track as they could in their 40-minute session. “A brisk walk is just as good as jogging.” As a school spirit initiative, each grade wore their color Character Counts T-shirts – red for kindergarten, purple for fifth graders and all of the other colors of the rainbow in between.

Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults. Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy. Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage. Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone. 1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as

A First-Hand Look At Fire Safety Just like they have fire drills in school, children should practice fire safety in their homes, volunteer firefighters explained at Seaford Harbor Elementary School on Oct. 11. Members of the Wantagh Fire Department, which has a station just a few blocks from the school, visited for the annual Fire Prevention Month program, offering lifesaving tips. Firefighters reviewed the basics such as stop,

drop and roll, the danger of matches and lighters, and the importance of having working smoke detectors. They encouraged students to go home and create an exit plan with their parents so they know what to do in the event of an emergency. Students watched as a firefighter put on all of his gear including boots, pants, jacket, helmet and breathing apparatus. This was to remind children that under all of that equipment is a person who

is there to help. After an assembly program, students went outside to see a fire truck and the tools onboard. Additionally, they went through the smokehouse, a trailer that is set up like a home, to reinforce the fire safety lessons. As it filled up with fake smoke, children crawled to the window, yelled for help and were brought out to safety by a firefighter.
