BENCH NAMED IN MEMORY OF KEN GROF - Ken Grof was a New York City fireman who passed away in March of Covid. Amazingly with all the fires, he put out and recently out on disability with 9/11 injuries it was Covid that would claim his life. Kenny was born and raised in Seaford. Marie DiPrizito, reached out to the town to have a bench in his memory installed next to the concession stand by the ballfield at Seaman’s Neck Park for all to visit and reflect. The data will be entered into the Ocean Conservancy’s international database via the Clean Swell app for use in policy making decisions. Save the Great South Bay, a local 501(c)3 environmental non-profit, recently teamed up with the Town of Babylon’s Department of Environmental Control installing a unique Bandalong Bandit Litter Trap along the Carll’s River to passively capture floating litter and debris before it flows into the Bay. The litter trap was donated by Gerogia-based Stormwater Systems after outreach by organization member Walt Meshenberg. The trap passively collects floatables 24/7/365 using only the natural current. It also features a patented tidal gate which prevents trash from exiting the trap without netting or fencing making it safe for all aquatic wildlife. Eric Hewlett of Stormwater Systems who was on hand to help out with the install said it was true to form with other installs he has done around the country. “This is another

Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness. Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to find clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult. They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares. If you are interested in making a donation to or volunteering with the Boutique, please email boutique@addressthehomeless.org. Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two
separate volunteer sessions; a Morning Session from 10AM12PM and an Afternoon Session from 1PM-3PM. Volunteers will be sorting non-perishable food items, along with other items. Masks are required and volunteers who will attend are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food (canned or boxed goods) with them to this Volunteer Day. Students at Seaford Harbor Elementary School are celebrating diversity and embracing differences. A bulletin board in the well-traveled hallway to the cafeteria will feature a unique display each month throughout the school year. The year begins with recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which
is celebrated annually from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Students can learn about prominent HispanicAmericans from the past and present who have made notable contributions in entertainment, politics, science and sports. They can also scan a pair of QR codes to view videos of librarians from the Seaford Public Library reading
books about diversity and inclusion. Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer said the display will always be topical, such as for Global Diversity Awareness Month in October and Native American Heritage Month in November. There will even be a month devoted to disabilities.

Local Volunteers Preach Fire Safety At Manor

Seaford Manor Elementary School students picked up some valuable safety tips from the local experts as members of the Seaford Fire Department visited for their annual Fire Prevention Month presentation on Oct. 5. The fire safety trailer was stationed outside of the
school for the day and each class went inside to meet with Seaford firefighters. Children learned about home fire safety, such as having working smoke detectors and an escape plan. Instead of exiting the trailer through the door they went in, they instead left through a window, aided by firefighters.
This emphasized the importance of knowing two ways out. To show children that firefighters are there to help, they got to meet some local volunteers in full gear and even were allowed to try on gloves and helmets. A big red Seaford fire engine also delighted students.

Supervisor Don Clavin, along with the entire Hempstead Town Board, announced the authorization of a $470,539.78 relief grant for Island Harvest Food Bank to establish the “2021 No One Goes Hungry in Hempstead” food distribution program for Town of Hempstead residents, including, senior citizens, veterans and other vulnerable populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. This program will run through December 31, 2021. The grant has been made possible through the federal CARES Act, which provided the Town of Hempstead with funding last year to provide economic aid to local organizations, nonprofits and individuals impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this month, the Town received the second part of the funding and is working diligently to help people and organizations affected by the FIRE PREVENTION MONTH PROGRAM - Seaford Manor Elementary School pandemic. Through COVID-19 relief funds secured through the CARES act, the Town of Hempstead has distributed over a million meals to residents in need throughout the pandemic, and this program expands this effort into the holiday season. With this grant, Island Harvest Food Bank compromises to distribute healthy shelf-stable food boxes to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity within the Town of Hempstead. This program includes the obtaining and distribution of food boxes for senior citizens, as well as healthy food for families and others facing insecurity during the holiday season. Island Harvest will be
partnering with school districts such as Roosevelt, Hempstead, Freeport, Baldwin, Levittown, Lawrence and Elmont to reach more families. Through federal CARES act funds, the Town of Hempstead has provided over a million meals; thousands of free COVID-19 tests in collaboration with Northwell for the general public, essential workers and first responders and over 7,000 COVID-19 vaccines have been administered thanks to the Town of Hempstead’s “Vaxmobile” in partnership with Mount Sinai South Nassau; thousands of PPE kits to small businesses and financial aid to front line entities and community centers such as villages, hospitals, fire departments, schools, colleges and universities and libraries. In addition, the Town of Hempstead recently extended a program with United Way of Long Island to provide free air filters to atrisk senior citizens. Oktoberfest Celebrations The style of beer most widely consumed during Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced to a time before refrigeration was available. According to the online beer resource BeerAdvocate.com, brewing beer in the summertime was nearly impossible in the days before refrigeration. Hot weather and the risk of bacterial infections complicated brewing in summer, so many brewers would cease brewing beer in spring and begin again in the fall when temperatures dropped. As a result, the beers available for Oktoberfest celebrations were the Märzen style of beer, or

The friendly competition between two hard working and academically gifted students at Seaford High School came down to fourth-tenths of a point. Jack Pidherney was named the Class of 2022 valedictorian with a weighted grade point average of 105.8 and salutatorian Rayann Ramoutar was close behind with a GPA of 105.4. They were both in the same class, SUPA Economics, when the announcement was made on Sept. 24. Principal Nicole Schnabel, Assistant Principals Jennifer Bisulca and Dr. Raphi Morey and guidance counselor Jennifer Pimentel all came in to deliver the good news. Jack and Rayann then went to the main office and called their mothers, noting the good advice they got that this was too important for a text. “It’s the culmination of all of my accomplishments and hard work here at Seaford High School,” said Jack, who started at Seaford Manor

achieve the same milestone as one of his biggest high school role models: Class of 2020 valedictorian Jason Linzer. Rayann, who moved to Seaford in sixth grade, said it was a pleasant surprise when she learned she is the salutatorian and admits it took a few minutes for it to truly sink in. “It’s the reward for studying all of those late nights and for getting up early to see a teacher for extra help,” she said. Jack and Rayann have been very active students during their time at Seaford High School, taking challenging courses and involving themselves in numerous clubs. Jack has taken nine Advanced Placement courses and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is active in student government, having served as class treasurer since ninth grade. As a member of Mathletes, he has received the high-score award every year. He is also involved in the
science club and radio club, and runs cross country in the fall and track in the winter and spring. Outside of school, Jack belongs to a robotics team and takes piano lessons. Rayann has taken eight AP classes and is a member of Mathletes and the National Honor Society. She is involved with the science research program and last year entered her project on global warming into the Long Island Science Congress, Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, New York Science and Engineering Fair and South Asian American Women’s Alliance science fair. She earned an honors award from LISC. The arts are also a big part of Rayann’s school life. She sings and plays multiple instruments including the alto saxophone, clarinet and piano. Rayann is a section leader in the band and a member of the jazz band, pep band and field show. She was in the ensemble for the musical productions
of “Legally Blonde” and “All Shook Up,” and as a junior was cast as Donkey in “Shrek.” In college, Jack plans to major in applied math and statistics to pursue a career as an actuary or in accounting. Among his top choices are MIT, New York University, Stony Brook University and Tufts University. Rayann said she plans to stay in the New York area, where her dream school is Columbia University, but others atop her list include NYU and Stony Brook. While she doesn’t have a specific major in mind, she is thinking about environmental science with a connection to business. “Jack and Rayann really define what a prideful Seaford High School student looks like,” Ms. Schnabel said. “They’re involved across the board. They’re academic role models and they bring the energy that we want every Viking to have.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced that the Raynham Hall Museum will host its 5th Annual “Ghost Walk”, a costumed parade featuring giant ghostly puppets of ancient Townsend family members being led by costumed paraders and their four-legged friends. The spooky seasonal event, which takes place on Saturday, October 30th, beginning at 7:30pm, will kick off at the Christ Church Rectory at 61 East Main Street in Oyster Bay, and proceed through the hamlet and conclude at Raynham Hall Museum. “The preservation of our history and the ability to educate our children on the past is so incredibly important and here in the Town of Oyster Bay, we
are blessed with historical treasures such as the Raynham Hall Museum,” stated Supervisor Saladino. “Raynham Hall hosts many historical and educational programs throughout the year, and I am pleased that the Town will be able to assist Raynham Hall with their annual ‘Ghost Walk,’ a fun tradition for children and families here that once again spotlights the amazing historical treasure that is the hamlet of Oyster Bay!” The “Ghost Walk” will feature entertainment in the form of two colonialdressed stilt walkers that will parade with revelers, in addition to the giant ghostly puppets of ancient Townsend family members, designed and built by Superior Concept
Monsters, Inc. After the “Ghost Walk,” a dance party will take place adjacent to Raynham Hall, with special entertainment featuring animated historical figures from the Revolutionary era. Food will be available for sale courtesy of local Oyster Bay institutions Cooper’s Bluff and Coach Meeting House Food Truck, and beer will be available from the Oyster Bay Brewing Company. Families and their furry friends are welcome at this free event, and participants are asked to bring lanterns and noise makers if they have them. A dozen students at Seaford High School earned the Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma during the 2020-21 school year, and an additional seven students earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. The AP Capstone Diploma program helps students to develop critical thinking, research, collaboration and presentation skills that are crucial to academic success. To qualify, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research and four additional AP Exams. Four students who earned the AP Capstone Diploma were graduates in the Class of 2021 including Mary Lynch, who is attending North Carolina State University at Raleigh for biology; Julia Martorana, who is attending the University of Pittsburgh for biology; Sofia Sanchez, who is attending Hofstra University for history and secondary education; and Kelly Wylie, who is attending Farmingdale State College for mechanical engineering
technology. Eight current seniors have already met the requirements and will receive the AP Capstone diploma upon their graduation in June 2022. They are Evan Block, Jared Brown, Peter Koubiadis, Jack Pidherney, Rayann Ramoutar, Annarose Romanelli, Chelsea Russo and Rabeya Shahid. To receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, students must earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research. The seven students who have received this distinction are Nikolas Bartolomeo, Grace Cassarello, Ava Federico, Christopher Lopez, James McHugh, Alexander Peraino and Natalie Villecco. “We proudly recognize the achievements of students who participated in the AP Capstone diploma program,” Principal Nicole Schnabel said. “Our AP Capstone students and teachers showed extraordinary commitment while facing historic challenges. This
is a meaningful college readiness program that will serve our students well after high school.” Unlike traditional AP subject exams with a single end-of-year assessment, AP Seminar and AP Research assessments are project based and evaluate skills mastery through group projects, presentations and individual essays completed throughout the year. At Seaford High School, students focused their research on a range of topics, including: own-race bias and Asian representation in films; LGBTQ beauty standards and influencers; impact of streaming services on teen theatre-going behavior; racial stereotyping in video games; euthanasia perspectives post-Covid; sugar substitute nonnutritive sweeteners and regeneration; bias in the MVP selection process; land and sea surface temps in the New York Metropolitan area; individual reaction time and musical modality; ocean acidification; and teen mental health.

Seaford Students See Success In AP Capstone Program
From the sidewalks of Washington Avenue to the bleachers of Seaford High School, there was a strong showing of support by the community during the first homecoming celebration in two years. The parade kicked off at noon on Oct. 9, led by the Nassau County Police Department and Seaford Fire Department. With steady crowds along the route, it passed Manor Elementary School before turning into the side streets and ending at the high school. Marchers included board of education trustees and administrators, students and teachers from all four schools, children from youth organizations and the marching band. This year’s grand marshals were the families of Michael Augustin, John Krzyminski and Ariel
Ramirez. The 2019 Seaford High School graduates are currently serving in the United States Marine Corps and were deployed to Afghanistan to assist in the evacuation of Kabul. Family members held up pictures of the three servicemen in the parade and again when recognized during the halftime ceremony. In the varsity football game, the Seaford Vikings hosted the Clarke Rams. The Vikings entered the field by bursting through a green banner, and with a Seaford fire engine spraying a green stream of water in the background. Although Clarke scored the first points of the game, Seaford quickly showed why it is an undefeated team. The 43-14 win gave the Vikings their sixth win in as many games.

Halftime festivities included a joint performance by the varsity, junior varsity and middle schools cheerleaders and solo show by the varsity squad. The marching band performed its 80s rockthemed show with music by Bon Jovi, Black Sabbath and Van Halen. The homecoming court was introduced, featuring Ava Albanese, Jared Brown, Matthew Garcia, Anthony Munro, Annarose Romanelli and Natalie Villecco. Free Online Job Skill Training Services Offered to Help Residents Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board remind residents that the Town offers free online job skills training for those individuals looking for new employment, as well as those looking to re-enter the workforce following the hardships imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic. Metrix E-Learning System,
the free online job skills training service, is offered through The Workforce Partnership - a consortium of local governments committed to providing free and valuable information and services to both employers and jobseekers. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Many people have experienced unimaginable and
unprecedented hardship throughout this pandemic, and as a result, many businesses have closed and individuals have lost work because of it. As we continue turning the corner in the fight against COVID-19, residents are looking to return to work and we’re proud to offer the Metrix E-Learning System to those who seek to ‘skillup’ and re-enter the
workforce more capable than when they left it. Of course, services are available for those looking for new employment opportunities as well, including recent college graduates and persons looking to change career paths.” The Metrix E-Learning System offers a wide variety of courses to help people who are looking for employment. Saladino And Town Board To Collect DVDs For U.S. Troops & Kids With Cancer Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as children’s movies for kids with cancer at local
hospitals. Donations will be accepted through October 29th and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner
with Big Hy for Heroes to send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as children with cancer in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.” The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa
resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today. Exciting, suspenseful,
comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Children’s movies are needed for local hospitals. Residents can donate DVDs at any of the following locations: • Town Hall North – 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay • Town Hall South – 977 Hicksville Road,

physical and spiritual well being of participants. It can have a profound impact on individuals, specifically veterans, suffering from a variety of distress, including PTSD.
