This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect

of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

Eating Healthy Day National Eating Healthy Day is Wednesday, Nov. 2 and as the American Heart Association’s new +color campaign emphasizes, it’s important to BE COLORFUL. Because as the old saying goes, “you are what you eat.” On this iconic day, and throughout the entire month of November, the association wants to remind Long Island residents that by adding more color to meals through fruits and vegetables, people can take simple yet significant steps to a more vibrant, healthier, longer life. In an effort to improve the diet quality of 55 million Americans, the association’s +color campaign is educating consumers on fruits and vegetables and the benefits each has to one’s health. Fruits and vegetables typically have more nutrients with fewer calories than other less-healthy food choices. Eating a colorful variety may help you prevent heart disease, stroke and other illnesses. National Eating Healthy Day and +color provide important

resources that can help our community members make healthier changes to their diet as easy as possible. “There’s proof in the research that preventive methods like healthy eating can increase survival rates from heart disease,” said Dr. Jean Cacciabaudo, Chief of Cardiology at South Side Hospital and American Heart Association volunteer. “It’s important to make those smart eating choices, like adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet each day, so that you can live a healthier life for you and your family.” A free online toolkit is available for those interested in participating in National Eating Healthy Day. Blue Star School Seaford High School earned its eighth Blue Star Award for successfully preparing its senior class with sound, practical financial knowledge that enabled them to earn their Financial Literacy Certification. The Blue Star honor is awarded by W!SE (Working in Support of Education), a nonprofit organization that provides educational services to build financial literacy, foster entrepreneurship, and prepare students for college and careers in a global workplace. In a required Economics 12 course, seniors are taught a range of financial topics, including budgeting, checkbook balancing, banking, investing,

money management and insurance, according to social studies teacher Scott Gilbert, who teaches the course along with his colleagues Theresa Karp and Lori Fritsch. Students then take the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Test online. To earn a Blue Star, schools must have a 75% passing rate on the certification test among 10 or more students and have either a majority of students on the same grade level take the test or have the students who took it achieve an average score of 80% or higher. Each year, Seaford exceeds those requirements and to date has had more than 1200 students successfully pass

the financial literacy test. In addition to the Blue Star honor, each teacher was recognized as a Gold Star Teacher for having 96% of their students pass the online test. The test was administered to about 150 seniors or about 75 % of the senior class. Among the 25 % that did not take the test are those enrolled in College Economics, which has a more demanding curriculum. “Financial literacy is such an important skill that is too often ignored in high school,” said Principal Scott Bersin. “We are proud to be able to offer our students these practical skills that they can apply to real-life situations after they graduate.”

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking breast cancer survivors to respond to a survey to determine the long and short-term value of support groups. The program, which has provided emotional support and education to New Yorkers concerned about breast cancer for 36 years, is in the second year of this research, asking survivors to share their feelings about support groups. The initial results of the research, conducted with 90 respondents, has produced some interesting data: • more than 75% of the respondents believe that being a member of a support group was valuable for their recovery; • 97% percent of respondents would recommend a support group to a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer; • 98% of the respondents report still thinking about breast cancer at least once every day although more than half have not attended a support group in over a year. The researchers have found that many of the respondents have favorable thoughts about breast cancer with 65% expressing gratitude that they are grateful that they beat breast cancer and 46% report thinking favorably about the support they received.
