Classmates since first grade, Lauren King and Eric Schneider are the top two graduates of Seaford High School’s Class of 2019. Lauren, with a grade point average of 103.80, was named valedictorian, and salutatorian Eric finished with a GPA of 103.03. Since their days together at Seaford Manor Elementary School, the two have consistently challenged themselves with rigorous coursework while getting involved in numerous extracurricular and community service activities. They have both taken 11 Advanced Placement courses in high school.
Lauren is an avid musician who plays the bass clarinet, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone. She has been a member of the marching band, pep band, pit orchestra, concert band and symphonic band, with her musical accomplishments earning her induction into the Tri-M Honor Society. Additionally, she has been a member of the robotics team, mock trial, Key Club, Mathletes, National Honor Society and Freshmen Mentors, as well as captain of the girls varsity field hockey team. Outside of school, she is a Girl Scout and earned her Gold Award for creating a peer music
tutoring program between members of Tri-M and middle school students. This past summer, she participated in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s High School Research Program. Lauren is also a junior counselor with the HOBY Youth Leadership program. Eric is president of the senior class, general chair of Model Congress and treasurer of the drama club, for which he has acted in the past three musical productions. He also is a member of the varsity cross country and spring track teams, the Homecoming committee and the school’s Shared Decision Making Committee. Eric has interned with

Seaford Public Library Trustee At the October 9, 2018, Board of Trustees meeting, Catherine Di Pietro was unanimously appointed a Trustee after a thorough interview process with a number of applicants. Di Pietro will fill the remainder of the term held by her late husband James Di Pietro which expires June 30, 2018. Catherine remarked “What an honor to be able to be a part of the Seaford Library Board of Trustees. It will be a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community after being here for 39 years.” Peter J. Ruffner, President of the Board of Trustees, remarked
that “Cathy Di Pietro is a truly remarkable woman. She has considerable experience in the health care field as a former employee of Mercy Medical Center, entrepreneurial skills from owning a food franchise, and human resource skills from service with a major retail entity. Plus, she raised both her children in Seaford. With those attributes, Di Pietro will be an invaluable addition to the Board.” Board Vice President Pat Coughlin expressed her admiration for Di Pietro’s volunteer work with the Nassau County Police Wives organization including serving as
President. Coughlin added that “those kinds of volunteer and leadership skills will prove important to her tenure on the Board.” Board Secretary Dr. Mary Westermann lauds “Cathy’s knowledge, experience, and wonderful sense of humor will make her a perfect choice to fill her late husband Jim’s term as a trustee at Seaford Public Library.” Library Director Frank McKenna says he “very much is looking forward to working with Mrs. Di Pietro as she joins the Library Board.”

Kyle Richards’ Hollywood Upbringing and Booming TV Career By Allison Kugel
Real Housewife of Beverly Hills, Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton Rothschild’s aunt; Kyle Richards has emerged as a Hollywood force. She is the breakout star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, now in its ninth season, and Executive Producer of the new hit television series, American Woman, loosely based on the colorful life of her late mother, Kathleen Richards. Allison Kugel: Your new television show, American Woman, is inspired by your mom’s life. What is the greatest lesson your mom taught you?

Kyle Richards: She would always tell me, “If you want something, put it out there and you’ll make it happen.” She would tell me that you have to plant the seeds. When you’re a kid you don’t really understand what that means. Now I realize that everything I was doing my whole life was planting the seeds for what I’m doing now. She told me I could do anything I wanted to if I set my mind to it, and to never take my eye off the ball. Allison Kugel: If she were still here, what do you think she would say about your new show, American Woman, and how she’s portrayed? Kyle Richards: I think she would be very excited and proud, because she knew this was something I wanted to do, and I made it happen. She would be so proud to see her daughter doing well and fulfilling her dreams. Allison Kugel: If you could go back in time, would you choose to be a child actor again? Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I had a
very positive experience as a child actor. I worked with incredible people. A lot of the things I did were in a very family-friendly environment. I got to travel and do exciting things I never would have been able to do if I were a regular child (laughs) living a normal life. I grew up in Bel Air, but obviously my friends weren’t actors. They went to school every day, they went to camp, and did all of those normal things. I didn’t get to do those things, but I was doing other interesting things and traveling. When we filmed Little House on the Prairie, we were filming out in Simi Valley and riding horses and playing in the streams and catching ducks. It was just like going to camp sometimes. Allison Kugel: You had an unconventional upbringing, as is reflected on this show. What kind of impact did your childhood experience have on what you looked for in a husband and family as an adult? Kyle Richards: I grew up in a house filled with women. My mom, my grandmother, my sisters, my mom’s friends… and my sister Kathy had these two best friends that basically lived at our house. It was like a big sorority house. There was a lot of fun in our house, but then I would go to my friends’ houses and I would see the dad coming home from work and the mom making dinner in the kitchen. I thought, “Oh, those are like the people on TV. Those are fake people.” But I always really admired that, and it was something that I always wanted to have. Allison Kugel: Did you have input into the casting of Alicia Silverstone, who plays the character inspired by your mom?
Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I was involved with every aspect of the show. When I originally met with Alicia, my thought was that the actress we cast had to be a natural redhead. My mom was a redhead and it was a big part of her personality. Alicia loved the script and I thought, “Okay, we’ll have a meeting,” because I love Alicia Silverstone! Who doesn’t love Alicia Silverstone? The second I met her, and I saw how inspired she was to dive into this role, or as Alicia describes it, “this juicy part,” I really felt she was the person to take on the challenge of portraying my mom. Allison Kugel: What was your motivation for signing onto The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2010? What did you hope would come from it?

Kyle Richards: [American Woman] was not the goal (laughs). I didn’t realize what the Housewives [franchise] really was when I started doing it. I didn’t understand the opportunities that would come my way. I was acting my whole life, and then I had pretty much stepped aside from that to raise my children. When The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills came up, I looked at it as just another gig. I didn’t know what it was like to do a reality television show, other than seeing my niece Paris [Hilton] do it. I thought, “This is great because it’s reality and my kids can be with me.” I had no game plan at all.
Kyle Richards: In American Woman, they show her working at The May Company, and with that part the writers took creative license. My mom was our manager growing up, because we were all acting in television. She was a single mom raising us. All of a sudden, she found herself in this big house with no husband. Even though we had this nice house in Bel Air, my mom was very strict. We had to make our own beds. When we got cars we were not allowed to go to the car wash, we each had to wash our own car. My kids now go and get their nails done. I wasn’t allowed to get my nails done. I did my own nails.
Allison Kugel: You’d been working in television since childhood, so it made sense to go back to what you knew.
Allison Kugel: I think that part is a generational thing, because I didn’t get my first manicure and pedicure until I was in college.
Kyle Richards: I’ve been doing television since before I could even read. American Woman happened through a fan. My friend came to me and said, “I have these fans of yours who would love to meet you. Would you mind doing lunch?” I agreed because he’s a very close friend of mine. They happened to be the producers of Shameless (on Showtime). At lunch they started asking me what my plans were for after Housewives. I told them I like to write, particularly about having an unconventional upbringing, and I began sharing some stories with them. Then I got a phone call that John Wells (American Woman’s Executive Producer) wanted to make my mom’s story into a television show.
Kyle Richards: Me either. A massage? Are you kidding me? I never had a massage until I was married.
Allison Kugel: What parts of Alicia Silverstone’s portrayal of your mom are accurate and which parts did
Allison Kugel: Do you find it a challenge to keep your kids grounded in Beverly Hills? Kyle Richards: It is a challenge, and the way I deal with that is through having open conversations. I don’t want to be a broken record with my kids because then they’ll stop listening, but I kind of am sometimes. My husband and I always talk about this. When we were first married we were in a very different position. My oldest would say, “When are we going to get a house?,” because we were in a condo. I would explain that we have to make money and save up, and we have to have an extra cushion in the bank. So she would say, “How many cushions do we need?” Allison Kugel: American Woman
takes place in the 1970s, just as the seeds of feminism were starting to take root. It seems that your mom was ahead of her time, in terms of being a feminist more than forty years ago. Kyle Richards: It’s funny you should say that, because my mom did not like the word “feminist.” It had such a negative connotation at the time. Back then, women weren’t supposed to be strong and outspoken. Nowadays it’s somewhat celebrated as empowering for women to be strong. I hope younger women, including my daughters, will see how far we have come and appreciate who they are and the power they have. In my mother’s generation, that was lost. Practicing Persistence Persistence was the first of the sixteen habits of mind that first-graders learned about at Seaford Manor Elementary School. Students then practiced persistence with a handson group activity. Teacher Angelina Lee talked to students about “the dip,” a feeling people experience when they are struggling and may feel
like quitting. That’s when it is most important to persist and keep trying. She told students about several celebrities who had to overcome challenging times to achieve their level of success, and they wouldn’t have been able to do so without persistence. Ms. Lee emphasized the importance of setting goals in striving to do something
they can’t do yet. Students split into groups and completed the domino challenge. Each group had to get 15 dominoes to stand up. The lesson demonstrated persistence because children quickly learned that if one domino fell, all of them did.

Helping Long Island Women Cope with Breast Cancer Chris Amato-Smith is helping Long Island women find the strength to fight Breast Cancer, one haircut at a time. Amato-Smith, owner of Top Cuts hair salon in Bethpage, NY, is paying it forward after battling and beating Breast Cancer. Her salon’s annual fundraiser, Cut-A-Thon for Breast Cancer, provides funding for Long Island women who are currently battling Breast Cancer, providing a reprieve from some of their every day responsibilities so they can focus on getting well. To date, Amato-Smith’s hair salon has raised $150,000.00 for the cause, and they are far from done! “While I was going through treatment, a Breast Cancer coalition helped me with their Lend a Helping Hand program. They help women with every day tasks such as meal preparation, house cleaning, transportation
and wigs, just to name a few. Taking some of those every day burdens away means these women can concentrate on getting well.” Now in its 10th year, Amato-Smith’s Cut-AThon designates one day a year where 100% of all proceeds received for the day’s beauty services go towards assisting women on Long Island who are currently battling Breast Cancer. This year’s Cut-A-Thon will feature over 125 baskets filled with various prizes, including: gift cards, crafts, pots, games, a trip to Antigua, a Joe Namath autographed and framed jersey, an electric fireplace, a camera, autographed first edition Disney series artwork, and more. The baskets are on display now for raffle ticket purchases. Contributors do not have to be present on the day of the event to win. In addition to the
salon’s standard beauty services, the staff will also be on hand to do pink hair extensions for Breast Cancer awareness. All are welcome to come to the event to get hair services, buy raffle tickets, make a donation or just come by and say hello. Top Cuts Salon’s 10th annual Cut-A-Thon for Breast Cancer event will take place on October 27th, from 9 am to 4 pm. There will be a deejay, snacks and refreshments. The raffle drawing will take place at 4:00 pm. Seaford Manor Fire Safety Seaford Manor Elementary School students got a lesson in fire safety from the experts. Volunteers from the Seaford Fire Department visited the school on October 9th for Fire Prevention Month. During a schoolwide assembly, students watched a video that focused on
fire safety in the home, such as the importance of having working smoke detectors and knowing two ways out in an emergency. Firefighters asked the children to go home and review their escape plan with their parents. Classes were invited into the fire department’s EDITH safety trailer to
practice exit drills in the home. As it filled with fake smoke, students were helped out of windows by volunteers. They learned that firefighters are their friends and underneath all of that gear is a man or woman who is there to help.

Seaford High School boasted 71 Advanced Placement Scholars, who were recognized for their exceptional achievement on AP Exams during the 2017-18 school year. The exams were given in May 2018. Fifteen students obtained the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken as well as scores of 3 or high on at least five exams. Those students include They include Jordan Ament, Carl Bloom, Jenny Chin, Catherine
Crawford, Jacqueline Galison, Connor Kelly, Lauren King, Joseph Lomuscio, Kendall Lowinger, Nicholas Minerva, Brian Rodriguez, Matthew Ryan, Chris Schneider, Eric Schneider and Emily Stark. Eight students earned the AP Scholar with Honors Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on at least four exams.
