Technology has always fascinated Seaford High School senior Josiah Perretti and he has found many ways to explore his interest. “I’ve taken almost every technology class,” he said, noting that his transcript includes basic car care, electricity and electronics, woodworking, robotics levels 1 and 2, math, science and technology/principles of engineering and introduction to game design. One of his favorite areas is robotics, getting his start in middle school and continuing his exploration of it as a fouryear member of the high school’s robotics team. He is now one of the senior leaders of team, sharing his expertise as they prepare for the annual First Robotics Competition at Hofstra University in the spring. Robotics competitions are engaging eighth graders at Seaford Middle School who are learning about the fast-growing technology field in a fun and exciting way. As part of their technology requirement, students take a half-year of traditional shop class and a half-year of robotics. Teacher Matthew Dolan said that students in the introductory class use VEX IQ robotics kits to build
their creations. They work together to build their robots and understand the basics of computer programming. To begin the year, the young engineers built remote-controlled robots to compete in different challenges. In one activity called High Rise, two students would compete against each other using their claw bots to move orange and yellow cones –

called hubs – into scoring zones to earn points. Hubs that were placed higher up and harder to reach were worth more points than those on the base of the competition pit. Mr. Dolan said that after operating robots by remote control, students moved on to coding. They had to program a robot’s series of moves in advance, which it would then follow with the press of a button. Students say they like the robotics class because the competition aspect is fun and they are getting to learn more about technology

they could be using in the future. “When we get older,” eighth grader Michael Anzelone said, “a lot of things are going to revolve around technology. Robotics is important to learn for later in life.” Katie Kofod added that she enjoys the class because it allows her to be creative and it promotes teamwork. She said that with the constant evolution of technology, it’s very important for students now to become familiar with robotics.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board invite residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Family Fall & Halloween Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 26th, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, located at 451 Unqua Road in Massapequa. “This festival is a great opportunity for residents to celebrate Halloween and the fall season with
activities that are fun for residents of all ages,” stated Supervisor Saladino. “From picking pumpkins to our popular Halloween hayride and inflatables, families are sure to enjoy all that the festival has to offer.” The Family Fall & Halloween Festival will feature a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to pick their own pumpkins (while supplies last), bring a decorated pumpkin contest, Halloween games

There were no ovens in sight, but there was still plenty of cooking going on in the library at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District as eighth graders refreshed their culinary knowledge. In early October, students in Family and Consumer Science classes participated in a hands-on Breakout EDU activity to review material from sixth grade. Students worked in teams and had to solve recipe-themed clues to open up a series of three-
digit, four-digit, letter, color and key locks. For one clue, students had to look at a list of ingredients printed in different color text. By putting the list in order from the smallest to the greatest amount, they were able to crack the code for the color lock. In another challenge, they had to convert large numbers of teaspoons and tablespoons to simpler forms to get the code. Each time a group solved a clue they shouted out a common baking ingredient.

Free Family Fall & Halloween Festival
Family and consumer science teachers Kristen Kenny-Didamo and Dani Shehada partnered with library media specialists Laurie Martucci-Walsh and Julie Rogers in coordinating the activity. Ms. Kenny-Didamo discovered the “Lost Recipe” activity on the Breakout EDU website as a fun way for students to work cooperatively using their prior knowledge of kitchen tools and measurements while getting them ready for the upcoming cooking unit.
