One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally. Some people lucked out. Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be. They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to. As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long

Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both. But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos. Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist. Let’s all hang in there. Together, we can – and will – get through this. And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

Last fall, hurricane Sandy brought into stark reality the challenges of educating displaced and homeless students. The McKinney Vento Act addresses the complex needs of these students. Over the years, Nassau BOCES has worked consistently to help local school districts meet those needs. This fall, the agency procured a $50,000 grant to help in the effort. The grant will fund important initiatives in meeting the needs of displaced students by providing staff development to help school districts better understand this unique population. They will delve into specific issues regarding the rights of displaced students, the responsibilities of school districts in serving them, and the role of social services. The grant also provides funds for districts in the Nassau BOCES McKinney-Vento Consortium – Freeport, Roosevelt, Uniondale and Westbury. These districts will receive monies to support tutoring for displaced students, to keep them on track with their classes and to prepare them for state assessments, as well as to provide essential school supplies. “This grant supplements district monies currently reserved for displaced students,” said Mary Costagliola, assistant coordinator for the Nassau BOCES Programs for Youth. “It makes more funds available for districts to support these students. Staff development is particularly vital,” she explained, “as it underscores the intricate needs of these students.”

He also recommended Cory for the FBI Teen Academy after learning that he wanted to pursue a career in forensics. “The experience was thrilling,” Cory said. Located in the FBI office in Federal Plaza, Cory spent one week with about 120 students learning every division and subdivision of the department, including the bomb squad, scuba team, SWAT team, counter intelligence and forensics. He also learned how to become an agent. He received a certificate upon completion and when he turns 17 he is eligible to apply for a possible internship. Cory, a good student, who excels in math and science and takes accelerated classes in those subjects, also plans to take a forensics course offered at Seaford High School next semester. Cory said he is thankful for the opportunities he has been afforded through Boy Scouts. After his Eagle Scout project is completed and other requirements are met, he will be on track to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scout’s highest honor, during his senior year.

Seaford High School sophomore Cory Levy was given a rare invitation to participate in an FBI Teen Academy this past summer after making an impression on federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) whom he contacted to help lay the groundwork for his Eagle Scout project. The Teen Academy program provides the opportunity for a select group of teens between the ages of 14-17 to learn about the important work of the FBI in the New York Field Office. Teens are generally nominated by their schools or a community leader and are selected based upon a combination of factors, including their grade point average, an essay and community involvement. Fundraising for his Eagle Scout project over several months, Cory raised more than $5,000, which he will use towards the construction and beautification of a

gazebo in memory of ATF Senior Special Agent John F. Capano. Capano’s death shook the Seaford community two years ago when he tried to detain an armed robber at Charlie’s Family Pharmacy on Merrick Road. Capano was mistaken for the robber by a retired Nassau Police Lieutenant and fatally shot him. The gazebo will be erected at Washington Avenue Park off of Jerusalem Ave. the first week in April, followed by a dedication ceremony with the Capano family, local legislators, ATF agents and community members in attendance. “I’m really honored to do this,” said Cory, who is a member of Boy Scout Troop 239. “I want to make it a beautiful spot, with flowers and a plaque that bears his personal shield.” Cory’s neighbor, Congressman Peter King, put him in contact with the Capano family who said they said they couldn’t be happier about this project, according to Cory. Cory sent letters describing his project to a list of contacts he received from the Capano family. One of those letters reached ATF Resident Agent in Charge Eric Immesberger, a close friend of the Capanos, who immediately contacted Cory to offer

Clifford Steinberg, Chief Information Officer for Nassau BOCES, was recently named a Certified Education Technology Leader (CETL) by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN). Steinberg is among only three educators in New York state and less than 100 nationwide to hold this distinction. The consortium is considered the premier professional association for school system technology leaders, and Steinberg had to pass its rigorous set of criteria

to earn the designation. CETL certification is awarded to educational leaders the consortium believes will help to bring 21st-century technology into America’s school systems. Steinberg earned certification by demonstrating mastery in the education technology field and by passing a comprehensive exam based on CoSN’s Framework of Essential Skills. “Earning the Certified Education Technology Leader certification demonstrates a commitment to bringing 21st-century learning to our nation’s schools,” said Keith Krueger, chief executive officer of CoSN. “Because of the recertification requirements, certified leaders pledge to stay current in the everchanging field of education technology.”

“Aside from the great advocacy work CoSN does, their systems-based framework guides the use of education technology, from project planning to implementation,” said Steinberg, of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. He went on to explain the significance to school districts. “Identifying and implementing technology in a targeted way will empower districts to make a meaningful impact on instruction and operations through the use of technology. Scholarship Gala Set St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will hold its 31st Annual Scholarship Gala on Friday, November 8th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m. This year’s black tie affair will honor SJC President S. Elizabeth A. Hill, C.S.J., J.D., who will be retiring in June 2014. Proceeds from this event will be used to establish the S. Elizabeth A. Hill Scholarship Fund. “It has been a great blessing and a true pleasure to work with S. Elizabeth for so many years, as she represents the best of leadership and integrity in every sense of the word,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Nancy Connors. “I will miss working with her every day, but I am grateful that she is an alumna of the College and will never

be that far away.” One of the region’s most influential women, S. Elizabeth has been president of SJC since 1997. Since her inauguration, she has overseen the expansion of two campuses, most notably the construction of a state-of-the-art Business and Technology Center and 24.8-acre premiere outdoor sports facility on the Long Island Campus, as well as launching a comprehensive, capital Master Plan for the Brooklyn Campus that included a 44,000-squarefoot athletic complex. Under her leadership, the College’s enrollment and range of academic offerings have continuously increased while tuition has remained consistently among the lowest in the New York metropolitan area. During her tenure as president, S. Elizabeth secured several large grants from the federal

government, including the largest in the College’s history. She was also responsible for securing successful major and estate gifts, including a bequest of $4 million to endow scholarships for students in need. S. Elizabeth has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for her leadership and lifelong dedication to the field of education. A magna cum laude alumna of SJC, S. Elizabeth is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. She received an M.A. in History from Columbia University and studied theology and scripture in Rome under the auspices of Gregorian University. S.
