ack 776 Scouts ventured out to Nassau County Council’s own camp, Shiff Scout Reservation, on September 20th, to learn about outdoor ethics and complete a service project for the camp. The Scouts were welcomed with an educational presentation on respecting nature and the outdoors. They then hiked through the beautiful camp and ended up at a campsite with a fire ring in need of repair, which they completed.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, hosted its “Walk, Run & Ride for Autism,” on October 12th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raised nearly $60,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said cochair of the event Charley Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but we exceeded it. the high school, made announcements over the PA system and developed a Facebook page. “The response has been amazing,” Jake said. “We collected more than 300 pairs of gently-used sneakers; it’s great to see so many kids helping out.” While pleased with the response, Jake hopes to spread the word throughout the district, opening up the opportunity for any Massapequa student or family to donate their unwanted sneakers. He also plans to get some sneaker stores involved and possibly spread the donations into other shelters. The donation bin will be set up throughout the school year with hopes that the next Student Council president will continue the effort next year. Jake, at 16, is already creating big shoes to fill. In addition to Student

Massapequa High School junior Jake Rosenblum is improving the lives of at-risk youth, one pair of sneakers at a time. The Student Council President is the founder of “Sole Survivors,” a campaign he thought of last March while looking at the extra pairs of sneakers taking up space in his closet. “I thought, there has to be others less fortunate than me who could use these sneakers,” he said. So he got to work, making with his dad an eye-catching donation bin out of chainlink fencing, a basketball hoop and a sign with a slick graphic. He set it up in the high school lobby after making a connection with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in Amityville to deliver the sneakers with his mom, after they wash them at the local laundromat. He made posters and hung them throughout

Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.

Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming

over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

Troop Field Trip Pack 696, of Massapequa, recently made a trip to Battleship Cove, in Fall River, Massachuesetts, to explore the world’s largest collection of historic naval ships. After touring the battleship Massachusetts, destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., submarine Lionfish, PT Boats 617 & 796, and the Russian missile corvette Hiddensee, the Scouts, their parents, and adult leaders spent the night of October 11th on board the famous USS Masschusetts. Battleship Cove’s Nautical Nights program included a storyteller,

major motion pictures, and veteran tours. The trip has enabled the Scouts to better understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans of all military branches in all wars. “The nostalgia on the ship was incredible! The knowledge that was obtained through the videos and the veterans who gave talks about the Massachuesetts was very enlightening and entertaining,” said John Serafino, a leader of the pack. Battleship Cove serves as the Commonwealth’s official memorial for

Massachusetts citizens of all military branches who lost their lives in World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gult Wars. Most recently, this memorial mission was expanded to include the Commonwealth’s victims of the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks.
