Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces. Donations will be accepted through November 15th, and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner

with Big Hy for Heroes to send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe. Help support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces by donating DVDs.” “Big Hy for Heroes” was started in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, “Big Hy for Heroes” has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today. Exciting, suspenseful,

Halloween is a unique day each year when people gather together for parties, parades and of course, trick-ortreating. October 31 is a day that most children eagerly await each year because it means an opportunity to don a costume and come home with bags full of sweet treats. This year Halloween figures to look different than it has in years past. Homes may have carved pumpkins on the doorstep and paper ghosts blowing on tree branches. And horror movies will no doubt dominate streaming service top 10 lists, but thanks to the COVID-19 virus, certain Halloween traditions may not be possible. Depending on regulations in your city or town, parties, trick-or-treating and school functions (if school is in

session) may be canceled or significantly modified. Since COVID-19 is so easily spread, health officials have long touted the need for social distancing. And while masks in public have long since become the norm, Halloween masks may not be sufficient. The coronavirus already has scared off some Halloween attractions. Universal Orlando, Disney World and Disneyland have canceled mainstream Halloween events for this year. Plus, a recent Harris poll on Halloween found that, of the 1,970 adults polled, nearly three out of four people have no plans to take their children trick-ortreating. So what is the public to do in the wake of the risks of going out for Halloween? • Maintain social

distancing if trick-ortreating is allowed. This could mean staggering times to go on the search for candy and avoiding homes where trick-or-treaters have already lined up. • Consider small gatherings that enable youngsters to exchange candy with a limited group of friends or neighbors. • Head to the mall or nearby stores in costume and get candy from retailers where it may be easier to maintain distance. • Wear your mask or special face coverings when trick-or-treating. Consider building a costume around the masks so it fits with the Halloween theme. • Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when water and soap is unavailable. Limit the number of houses you visit to reduce your risk of infection. • Ask family or friends to send digital treats, such as gift cards or certificates. Many restaurants may offer voucher programs for coupons for free ice creams at their locations, and while these may not be traditional Halloween goodies, ice cream is still sure to please youngsters. • Consider car parades instead of traditional trickor-treating. Despite the COVID-19 virus, Halloween enthusiasts can find ways to be safe and have fun this year.

Students stepped foot in Seaford’s four schools for the first time since mid-March as the 202021 school year opened on Sept. 8. But, as life during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a little bit different, so was the reopening of school. Seaford’s new year is beginning gradually, with days set aside during the first week for specific grades to attend school so students could become acclimated to all of the health and safety protocols. On the first day, Harbor and Manor elementary schools welcomed fourth and fifth graders, who met their teachers and learned about new procedures

such as eating lunch in their classroom and social distancing at recess. Seaford Middle School’s new sixth graders also were in class on Day 1. As students walked up to Harbor, they were greeted with sidewalk chalk messages including “Welcome Back,” “Longest Spring Break Ever” and “Seaford Pride.” At Seaford High School, students will come to school every day, but will attend classes in person either in the morning or afternoon on rotating days, while participating in distance learning the other half of the day. There was a special treat for the senior class

How To Prepare And Cook Pumpkin Seeds Nutrition and Halloween do not necessarily go hand in hand. While many parents may go to great lengths to ensure their youngsters’ Halloween treats offer at least a little nutritional value, the bulk of costumed kids’ hauls still tends to be candy. Pumpkin seeds are one delicious yet often overlooked Halloween treat. According to Healthline, an online medical resource that aims to educate readers as they pursue their health and overall wellbeing, pumpkin seeds provide a host of health benefits. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that a single cup of pumpkin seeds can provide as much as 22 percent of a person’s daily recommended value of dietary fiber. In addition, pumpkin seeds are loaded with vitamin K, which plays a role in blood clotting and bone metabolisms and

helps to regulate blood calcium levels. Pumpkin seeds tend to be easily accessible come Halloween, as they’re right inside the pumpkins many who celebrate this ghoulish holiday turn into jacko’-lanterns. When carving pumpkins this Halloween, people can forgo relegating pumpkin seeds to the garbage can in favor of cooking them. To avoid such changes, make sure the seeds are not roasted for more than 20 minutes. Once they have been roasted, pumpkin seeds can be served as-is as a delicious snack. Whole Foods notes that seeds also can be sprinkled into mixed green salads. Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing. Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals. This Halloween, don’t forget to add a little nutrition to celebrations by roasting some pumpkin seeds.

She also strengthened opportunities for women in the company. “Juliana has truly showed us what can be accomplished when you put a woman in the driver’s seat,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Her many business triumphs and focus on promoting women in the workplace are inspirational.”

New Normal Is No Problem Learning looks a little different this year at Seaford Middle School but teachers and students have adapted to a new environment that balances both education and safety. Instead of hundreds of students in the hallways between periods, they are assigned to one classroom for the day, with teachers coming to them. Each grade is clustered in a different area of the school, and all desks have protective barriers. Students use their district-provided laptops to access their course material, submit assignments and work collaboratively with classmates. Each classroom is equipped with a camera to provide live instruction to students on full remote instruction. Seventh grade science teacher Roseann Zeblisky said that because not all of her classes are in a science room, she has been creative with lessons, relying on technology. Her students use a program called Gizmos to do virtual labs. “Everything is on a screen, but it is as if they are using the real tools,” she said.

For a lesson on motion, in which students studied direction, position and displacement, they used Minecraft to design a town and create a route through it with a start point and end point. Students worked in groups using a chat feature. Once the projects were done, students then tried to navigate through the digital towns made by other groups. “It’s a fun and unique way to express your creativity,” seventh grader Tommy Sen said. “This is definitely a new way of learning science and I love it.” Technology teacher Matthew Dolan gave every student in his eighth grade robotics classes a lollipop and asked them to write directions on how to open it and eat it. This gave them an understanding of how computer programming works, and the important of being detail and specific. After each student wrote directions, another student would act as the robot to see if the directions were successful. Students do get a break from their classrooms for physical education. In the gym, there are markers spaced out 12 feet apart,

where students do warmup exercises and light aerobic activities. On nice days, they go outside to the track and turf field for social distancing activities that also require minimal sharing of equipment. Student can walk, jog or run around the track, or play field games such as Cornhole and Kan Jam. Physical education teacher Cara Klasson said healthy bodies lead to healthy minds, so students learn activities they can do on their own to maintain an active lifestyle. For incoming sixth graders, the transition to middle school hasn’t been quite what they would have expected a year ago, but they are still excited about the change and to be back in school after remote-only instruction from March through June. Michael Kofod and Molly Montagano, who both attended Harbor Elementary School, said they like having different teachers for the different subjects and getting to make new friends from Manor Elementary School. “It’s nice being back,” Molly said, “and being in a new school starting a new chapter.”

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new guidelines on how to celebrate Halloween safely. The agency grouped Halloween activities into low, moderate and high-risk buckets with traditional door-to-door trick-ortreating making the top of the higher-risk activities for spreading COVID-19. The guidelines come one week after Governor Andrew Cuomo said he wouldn’t

formally ban trick-ortreating this year, but said he won’t necessarily encourage parents to take kids door-to-door either. For those who do plan to head out this October, Sharon Nachman, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital has some tips for families on how to safely trick-or-treat on Halloween during the

pandemic. 1. Staying 6 feet away while walking and going from home to home. 2. Go trick-or-treating in small groups. 3. Parents and kids should always wear their masks while walking in the neighborhood, as well as when you open the door to hand out candy. 4. Not allowing (older) kids to go out unsupervised. 5. Consider organizing

your route. Talk to friends and neighbors and have a preset signal. For example, outside lights means kids know this is a home you can stop at for trick-or-treating. 6. Only wrapped candies or treats. 7. Some families may elect to leave a few treats on their outside stoop of their home. If that is the case, then remind kids to only take one! 8. No parties!

How to Safely Trick-or-Treat this Halloween Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic 9. You can leave a bucket or wear a mask and use hand sanitizer when handing out treats. No crowding at the door is important. 10. Pre-organize the route. “Parents can work to make trick-or-treating safe. It will take some extra preparation and thinking,” said Dr. Nachman. “Kids can have a good time. It will just look different from past years but that’s fine.”
