The grants provided by GGT only cover a portion of the expenses. Fortunately, several Long Island funeral homes, including Fives Funeral Homes in Smithtown and Patchogue work with the organization to help families struggling to pay for funeral costs stay within a budget.” On October 29, 2023, GGT and LICADD will be hosting its annual fundraiser, “The Peter Sweisgood and Gabriel’s Giving Tree Healing and Recovery Breakfast” in memory of former LICADD Executive Director, Peter Sweisgood. The breakfast will honor Richard Buckman, Founder of the Long Island Recovery Association and Ed Olsen

(posthumously) for their contributions to the field of recovery. The Breakfast is an opportunity for families to share their experience in grief and healing during a casual, come as you are event. After her grandson Gabriel died of an overdose in 2010, Grandmother Paulette Phillippe remembers how her family had the additional struggle to pay for funeral expenses. That’s why in 2020, to mark Gabriel’s 10th anniversary in heaven, she formed Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT) to help families in need on Long Island pay for funeral and burial services after a loved one dies from an opioid poisoning or substance use disorder. In 2021, GGT joined forces with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), together they have raised more than $100,000, assisting nearly 30 families to provide their loved ones one final gift. Says Phillippe, “I know from experience that many families may not have these funds, especially

A “probably unhealthy obsession” with Garbage Pail Kids cards is Michael Kerr’s inspiration not only as an artist, but as an art teacher. The Seaford High School educator was recently published in SchoolArts Magazine for a piece he wrote on a lesson for his Comic and Cartoon Illustration class. Every year, Mr. Kerr’s students take part in a parody and satire though cartooning project. They make their own trading cards inspired by Garbage Pail Kids. The Comic Class Kids cards spoof characters in pop culture, such as Homer Simpson and Super Mario. Mr. Kerr’s article, which he wrote during the 202021 school year, breaks down

the lesson for art educators. It also features six Comic Class Kids examples from current and former Seaford High School students. The project begins with each student coming up with a character and a pun. The creations should be gross, cute and witty all at the same time. Students first draw their characters, then scan into the computer, where they are completed in Adobe Illustrator. The background colors, fonts and other elements are added digitally. When the project is completed, the cards are printed out and each student gets a class set as a memento. “I love bringing humor and the artistic style that inspired me into my

Omar Brown of Seaford, a longtime Nassau BOCES educator and Barry Tech alumnus, has been appointed as Assistant Principal of the agency’s Seaman Neck Middle School, for students with learning, behavioral, emotional and developmental challenges. In addition to having served Nassau BOCES for more than 15 years as a special educator, Mr. Brown is also a graduate of the computer engineering program at the agency’s Barry Tech career and technical education high school. Already an accomplished musician, Seaford High School senior Kieran Calderaro has earned his second straight selection to the New York State School Music Association’s All-State festival. He will perform in the bass section with the jazz choir in Rochester from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3. The 2023 conference will include music workshops, rehearsals and performances with student-musicians from across the state. Kieran has consistently earned All-County honors for his vocal skills since elementary school, and last year received his first All-State nod. He joined chorus as a fourth grader at Seaford Harbor Elementary School and has been singing ever since. This year, he is a member of the high school’s barbershop quartet, chorale and Viking Voices jazz choir. His musical abilities don’t stop there. Kieran can be found on the alto saxophone in the school’s marching, jazz and pep bands, and also plays the piano. Since sixth grade, he has performed in every middle school and high school drama production, most recently portraying Inspector Kemp in “Young Frankenstein.” Outside of school, Kieran is a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra’s mixed chorus and has sung at Carnegie

Our health care needs change over time, so you should carefully consider your foreseeable health care needs each year. A plan that worked for us previously may not be the best choice going forward. As we head into the Medicare Open Enrollment season, it is important for people to read mail from their current health plans to see if there are any changes that might impact them for 2024. It is important to keep informed about your coverage. The 30th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) of Eastern Long Island took place on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Grangabel Park in Riverhead. MSABC is a celebration of courage and hope, and a movement that unites communities to end breast cancer as we know it, for everyone. Over the past three decades, Making Strides

Against Breast Cancer’s 3- to 5-mile walks have collectively grown into the nation’s largest and most impactful breast cancer movement – providing a supportive community for survivors, caregivers and families alike. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer funds lifesaving breast cancer research and is committed to advancing health equity through

essential programs and services. At this year’s event, there were more than 350 attendees and a total of $115,000 was raised. Cancer Facts and Figures: • -In 2023, 18,780 women in New York will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast Cancer affects men too.

• -There are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. today, including those who have completed treatment and those still undergoing treatment. More than 150,000 of these survivors are living with metastatic breast cancer.

• -The death rate from breast cancer dropped by 42% from 1989 to 2019 as a result of earlier detection through increased awareness and mammography screening, as well as advances in treatments. • -Since 1993, the American Cancer

Society has invested more than $600 million in breast cancer research. -No one should face breast cancer alone. The American Cancer Society helpline provides information and support 24/7 at 800.227.2345.
