bones, animal skins and a longhouse to demonstrate what life was like for Native Americans living in the northeast. According to fourth-grade teacher Denise Stevens, the students are studying a unit called “People of the Longhouse,” which delves into the history of the Haudenosaunee tribe (commonly known as the Iroquois). Students are learning about their government and ways of survival, their games and traditions, how the Great Peacemaker brought peace to the Senecas, Cayugas, Onondagas, Oneidas and Mohawks, known as the Five Nations, and how the past relates to present day Native Americans and today’s society. The hands-on presentation enhances what students are researching in the classroom and will be delivered to fourth graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School at the end of the month.

And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? The Nassau BOCES Adult Education Program has partnered with Hofstra University to offer the perfect launch pad for aspiring chefs through the newly opened Culinary Institute. Courses take place at the Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center in a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen that has been praised by industry experts as one of the most sophisticated facilities in the country. At the Culinary Institute, students learn from seasoned culinary arts professionals about nutrition, the art and science of quality food preparation, and how to land a job in the food industry. The Institute’s Baking course, running now and in the spring, prepares students for entry-level positions in the food service industry through in-depth experience and hands-on skills. Baking students will develop the necessary skills to prepare everything from quickbreads, cookies and cakes, to specialized ethnic desserts and showpiece designs. THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS BY: JORDAN CIANCIULLI, SENIOR, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL

As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the

pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

Seaford High School Senior Elise Weber is a quadruple threat when it comes to the arts. She’s a singer, dancer, actress and artist, and has been honing her skills since she was three years old. Her true passion, however, is visual arts. And it shows. Elise was recently named a Scholar-Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA). She is one of 20 high school seniors island-wide to be recognized for exceptional artistic talent and superior academic achievement. “Expressing myself

through art is what makes me happy,” Elise said. “I want to do it for the rest of my life. My art teacher, Mrs. [Donna] Manning has been such an inspiration to me, I want to be an art teacher just like her.” “Elise is a natural,” Manning said. “She takes criticism well and is always hardworking and willing to build on her talents.” Elise is Treasurer of the National Art Honor Society and is a three-time AllCounty artist. As a ScholarArtist she will appear in a monthly feature in

Lee Denim Day There’s never been a better excuse to wear jeans to work. Seaford Manor Elementary School teachers sported their denim and pink attire, October 2nd, to support

Lee® National Denim Day, a campaign in which participants wear denim and donate $5 or more to the American Cancer Society® to help fight breast cancer.

The school participates in the campaign every October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, whose official color is pink. The teachers raise an average of $300 for the cause.

It was a magical night of will and inspiration as the Seaford Vikings celebrated two victories during its Disney-themed Homecoming, September 26th. In a dreams-cometrue moment, senior Nico Fiorello, proudly walked onto the field as Grand Marshal and as Homecoming King after a miraculous recovery from a diving accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down only four months ago. “I’m on top of the world,” Nico said. “The support of my family and friends has been amazing. I can’t even put it into words.” Making the night even sweeter, the Vikings crushed East Rockaway, 43-3, after taking a giant lead in the first half and

never looking back. In true Seaford fashion, hundreds of fans lined the streets for the parade and the stands for the game, cheering and applauding during each event of the evening. With a wide grin, Nico stood tall as he was honored by Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, State Assemblyman David McDonough and Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads, and then as he was crowned King alongside Homecoming Queen Elyssa DiConstanzo. After a rousing halftime show featuring the Seaford High School Marching Band, the Colorguard and the Seaford High School and Middle School cheerleaders, the winning float and Spirit Week winners were announced.

Sophomores took the top honors for the float and juniors won Spirit Week. The Booster Club and all the volunteers not only made Homecoming a spectacular sporting event, but an opportunity for the community to express its love and support for a senior athlete who beat the odds. According to Nico’s mother, Lorraine, doctors said he is one of the lucky few who will fully recover. After two surgeries and months of intensive therapy, he hopes to return to his lacrosse team in the spring. His strong will lives up to two simple words featured on the neon T-shirts his supporters have been wearing throughout his recovery: “Never Quit.”
