Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterﬂy to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

The community lined the streets for the Homecoming parade and then cheered the Vikings onto victory, 34-6 against Clarke High School. With this year’s theme of “New York, New York” a new tradition was set as each high school class marched in the procession with a banner they created depicting the theme. The

Ally, who received the honor for her superior skills and exceptional game sense, knowledge and sportsmanship, was one of 10 girls in Nassau County to receive the title, but the only one to earn it after her junior season, an achievement that further attests to her talent. Molly, one of Seaford’s top academically ranked students last year, earned the academic title for her exemplary lacrosse skills, sportsmanship and high academic achievement. She is the first Seaford student athlete to receive this honor. “Both girls are exceptional role models for all Seaford student athletes and most deserving of the AllAmerican recognition,” said Seaford Schools Athletic Director Thomas Condon. “If you’ve ever seen Ally on the field, she’s a real dynamo. She’s fast; determined; an unbelievable talent. Molly excelled as an Honor Student, a threesport athlete, a team leader and captain, and a school leader, taking full advantage of the many opportunities Seaford High School has to offer.” Ally said she never expected to receive the honor and was surprised when her coach, Kurt Dankenbrink, came to her home to deliver the news. “My mom started crying; I was so excited.” Ally, a mid-fielder and team captain, has been playing the game since second grade. She made the varsity team in ninth grade and over the years helped bring the team to semi and quarter finals. She also played on the School Girls National Team, which captured the Long Island Championship, as well as other traveling, national and camp teams. Molly, who plays defense, got her start with the Police Activities League.

She also played varsity throughout high school and was captain for two years. A leader on the field as well as the classroom, Molly is studying to be a nurse while playing lacrosse for the Molloy College Lions. Dankenbrink said, “Ally’s speed and agility is like nothing I have seen in my 19 years of coaching girls lacrosse. Ally is a team player and great teammate. She is our vocal leader and a role model for the younger girls in the Seaford girls lacrosse program.” “Molly,” he said, “was the ‘team mom,’ and served as captain for the last two years. Molly’s graduation will impact the team for years to come. She has done so many things both on and off the field to lead us to many successful seasons.” Ally said the honor is a culmination of all her hard work and sacrifices she made for the sport. She committed to Northwestern University in her sophomore year to study journalism at one of the most renowned programs in the country. In addition to lacrosse, Ally captains the volleyball and basketball teams. She is Student Council secretary, participates in Freshmen Mentors, a group the helps freshmen acclimate to the high school, and works on the high school yearbook. Molly was also a threeseason athlete. She played field hockey and basketball

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait – check the date!” - the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, October 9th15th - promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years. “Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly”, said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski. President Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms. Statistics show that three out of five U.S. home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working alarms. Homes with battery-disabled smoke alarms or alarms that have outlasted their full functionality put people at increased risk in the event of a home fire. Beginning January 1st, 2017 in New York State, the sale of smoke-

detecting devices powered by removable, replaceable batteries will be prohibited. Instead, retailers will be able to sell only smokedetecting devices with a power source that isn’t removable and lasts at least a decade. Increased availability of extendedlife batteries and new tamper-resistant smoke detectors is expected to help individuals and families better protect themselves and their loved ones. Existing devices already in homes will be allowed to remain there until they stop functioning, and smoke detectors with replaceable batteries will continue to be on sale in the state throughout 2016. New York State law requires that all homes and businesses must have working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors with a 10-year lifespan are already on the market; most are powered by lithium batteries, not a traditional 9-volt. FASNY, along with the approximately 110,000 volunteer firefighters in New York State and safety advocates nationwide are joining forces during Fire Prevention Week, to remind residents

to take the following precautions: Smoke alarms: replace every 10 years. · A smoke alarm’s age can be determined by looking on the back or side of the smoke alarm, where the date of manufacture can be found. · Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase or installation). Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old - or sooner if they don’t respond properly. Batteries: test monthly, replace yearly · Smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries should be replaced when they begin to chirp, signaling that they’re running low. Two-thirds of fire deaths occur in homes with no, or nonfunctioning, smoke alarms · Have at least one smoke alarm on every ﬂoor, including the basement and in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. · Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.
