Hearing Mr. McGeady’s story brought many of us to tears. It was a reminder to all of us that while there are many who are brain aneurysm survivors, about 30 percent of cases with a ruptured aneurysm are fatal.” Mr. McGeady, 34, of Clifton Park, NY, was joined on stage by brain aneurysm survivors Luisina Alonzo, 22, of Bellerose, Queens, and Cynthia Mathis, 40, of New Hyde Park, LI, who each shared their stories. Walk participants were reminded of the warning signs of a brain aneurysm: severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation.

While Seaford High School valedictorian Jason Linzer and salutatorian Matt Karounos earned their respective rankings because of their strong academic performances, their contributions in all aspects of school life has distinguished them among the 191 members of this year’s senior class. They are also standout athletes and model citizens. Seaford High School Principal Scott Bersin recently announced that Jason and Matt are the top-ranked graduates in the Class of 2020. Jason earned a weighted grade point average of 107.287, followed by Matt with a 105.709 GPA. “I am obviously very happy,” Matt said. “It is nice when all of your hard work comes together and you get recognized for it.” Jason added that he is grateful to be rewarded for his efforts and he will continue his strong work ethic and pursuit of knowledge throughout senior year to set himself up for success in college and beyond. A product of Seaford Manor Elementary School, Jason is a devoted longdistance runner who is a member of the cross country, winter track and spring track teams and a captain of all three. He has
been a county champion and received All-State and All-Conference honors. Jason also is a member of Freshmen Mentors, the National Honor Society and the Seaford Fire Department’s Explorers program. Recently, he was named a commended student by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Jason said his favorite classes in high school have been math and science including pre-calculus, statistics, calculus, biology, chemistry and physics. He is a member of the Science Olympiad team and the science research program, and this summer did volunteer cancer research at Stony Brook Hospital’s Health Science Center. Jason hopes to major in biochemistry in college on a pre-medicine track. Matt, who got his start at Seaford Harbor Elementary School, is playing his third season on the varsity soccer team and has been a captain for two seasons. He also plays on the varsity basketball and baseball teams, is a member of the Seaford Athletic Leadership Council, Freshmen Mentors and the National Honor Society, in addition to regularly volunteering for the food pantry at a church in Dix Hills.
One particular passion for Matt is his work with the Best Buddies club, which pairs high school students with peers with intellectual and developmental disabilities in one-to-one friendships. Matt is vice president of the club and this past summer attended a leadership conference at Indiana University, bringing many ideas back to Seaford he
would like to implement. As he ponders his college choices, he is considering majoring in either special education or mathematics with a concentration in statistics. Jason and Matt have both taken 13 Advanced Placement courses and are expected to be among the first Seaford graduates to earn an AP Capstone diploma after taking the
two courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, during their sophomore and junior years. Guidance Counselor Suzanne Cosenza said she is extremely proud of both of them. She described Jason as an exceptional and focused student who is always looking to take the most challenging courses. About Matt, she noted that his work with Best Buddies
and his desire to see that every student is included “speaks of his heart.” “The one thing that really stands out about both boys is their modesty,” she said. “That’s really been consistent over the four years that I’ve known them. If you look at their transcripts, they have a lot of reasons to brag, both academically and outside of school.”

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

Senior vocalist Carly Corsitto will sing with the Women’s Choir and senior Liam McDonald will play the mallets in the symphonic band. Carly, a soprano, is a member of several vocal groups at Seaford High School including the Chamber Choir and the Select Choir. She is enrolled at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts and attends an afterschool program at the From Stage to Screen Performing Arts Academy. This past summer, she took part in a musical theater program through the Boston Conservatory at the Berklee College of Music. Liam, a percussionist, performs with Seaford High School’s jazz band, marching band and pep
the Chamber Choir, Select Choir and barbershop ensemble. Outside of school, he is a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra’s Nassau Principal Orchestra as well as the Long Island Youth Orchestra, and attends the Juilliard School’s precollege music program. Over the summer he participated in a summer music festival hosted by the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Both students are members of the Seaford High School drama club and the Tri-M Music Honor Society, of which Liam is the president. Engaging In Science Study Careers in science are likely in the future for Seaford High School students Jason Linzer and Sarah Keane, who spent this past summer in research endeavors. Both are participants in the school’s science research program, which allows them to explore topics of personal interest. Jason, a senior, volunteered this summer doing cancer research at Stony Brook Hospital’s Health Science Center. From early July through late August, he made the trip several days a week to get a first-hand experience at medical research. Jason said that for most of his time, he assisted a doctoral student on cancer research and conducted experiments that involved growing cells, performing tests and analyzing the results. This is his third year
in the science research class and he will use the data he gathered over the summer for his project. After analyzing a wealth of information, Jason will prepare a paper and posterboard presentation for different science fair competitions. He added that spending the summer in a laboratory setting reinforced his desire to pursue a career in biochemistry. Sarah, a junior, took part in Hofstra University’s six-week Summer Science Research Program. Working with a microbiology professor, she examined the effects of membrane stress on a strand of bacteria, Acinetobacter baylyi. She examined the effects of antibiotics on this bacteria, which is similar to one found in many intensive care units at hospitals, Acineobacter baumannii.
Like Jason, she will also continue her work from her summer experience in the science research class. The well-equipped classroom has all of the resources she needs to conduct further experiments and complete her research. Of her summer experience, Sarah said she really enjoyed the opportunity to spend time in a laboratory setting and it further validated her desire to work in the health sciences. However, she said she would prefer to pursue a career that would allow her to interact directly with patients. As Jason and Sarah continue their research under the direction of teachers Janine Cupo and Mary Simons, both will also have support from ENGAGING IN SCIENCE STUDY - Seaford High School senior Jason Linzer their summer program and junior Sarah Keane participated in summer science research programs and are mentors. now continuing their work in their science research class.
