The social, emotional and mental well-being of students will be a top priority in the Seaford School District this year, and that message was delivered by one of the country’s top experts. Dr. Marc Brackett, founder and director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence,

spoke to administrators, teachers, pupil personnel services staff, coaches and high school student leaders during Superintendent’s Conference Day. “Emotions matter” was Dr. Brackett’s primary message during three presentations, which set the tone for the

new school year, which began the following day. While emotions and feelings are instinctual, Dr. Brackett explained, emotional intelligence is something learned over a lifetime. For example, he said many people don’t understand the difference between anxiety

and stress. He discussed emotion judges and emotion scientists, and said that teachers and staff should strive to be the latter – people who are open, curious and reflective, seek to understand the causes behind feelings, ask questions and listen, and have a growth mindset. When teachers know how students are feeling, they can better connect with them and provide a greater level of support. Dr. Brackett added that giving students the skills they need to thrive personally, socially and psychologically is an important part of their education, and the adults at their school must be emotional intelligence role models. emotions. Dr. Brackett discussed this evidencebased approach that boosts academic performance, decreases bullying, enriches classroom climates, reduces teacher stress and enhances instructional practices. The Seaford school community will soon become familiar with the mood meter, which is divided into red, yellow, blue and green quadrants, each representing a category of feelings. Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora said that 18 months into the pandemic has had various emotional impacts on students and their families, and it is crucial for school district to be there to support their mental health needs. The adoption of the RULER philosophy can give students the tools to harness their emotions in order to thrive in school and in life. “We are extremely appreciative to Dr. Brackett for being here and helping launch this new partnership between Seaford and the

Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence,” Dr. Pecora said, noting that his team will be providing further training throughout the year. “This is just the beginning for us, in creating a school environment where we are focused on students’ social and emotional wellbeing as much as their academic success.” Seaford High School Principal Nicole Schnabel, who coordinated Dr. Brackett’s visit, noted that he met with about two dozen student leaders in his final presentation, representing student government, clubs and athletics. “Students are at the heart of everything we do, and our student leaders drive each of our missions home,” Ms. Schnabel said. “Having them be a part of this initiative, to empower ourselves and one another with increased emotional intelligence, will only strength our abilities to reach the entire community.”

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island. Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or cannot find rental units quickly enough in a high cost and low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. While many of us could never imagine being homeless for even a single night, for both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months on average,

while some remain homeless in shelters for several years before securing permanent

It is a responsibility we share as a community,” said Assemblyman Durso. “Food drives are critical in keeping the shelves of food banks stocked. The over 21,000 meals collected through “Power To Feed Long Island” will help put food on the table for individuals and families facing food insecurity. Thank you to all the volunteers, staff, and supermarkets that took part in this great program.

And a special thanks to all the residents who came out and donated at drives across the Island.” All items collected through the program were donated to Island Harvest which delivers millions of pounds of food to Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens and other non-profit organizations that offer food assistance to those in need.

All of those are part of what has become known as the local “Coordinated Entry System”. Coordinated Entry is a personcentered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services, while prioritizing those who have been homeless the longest and those who are the most in need of housing and support. In 2020, LICH assisted over 3,000 Long Islanders with food and toiletries and connected approximately 200 households to permanent housing. Next month from November 14-November 21 it will be Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, let’s join together and help those in need. Assemblyman Durso Attends “Power To Feed Long Island” Event

Teacher Shari Raduazzo, the Seaford High School Pathways to Service moderator, and Giana Cesario, a 2021 Patriot Award scholarship recipient, presented Dr. Pecora with a binder filled with service commitments made by Seaford students, residents and community organization over the past year. The district and the Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee have emphasized a commitment to service over the past 20 years in honor of the five alumni who served their communities in various ways. Ken Haskell, president of the 9/11 Memorial Committee and brother of Thomas and Timothy, spoke about the five alumni and how they represented the goodness in humanity. “All these men were proud to be Vikings,” he said. “They shared the same hopes and aspirations as the students here tonight.” Haskell’s cousin, David Haskell, an active member of the military, said every high school in the United States should have a service

like in Seaford on the anniversary of Sept. 11. Monsignor Steven Camp, who was pastor of St. William the Abbott Church when the attacks happened, also noted the uniqueness of Seaford’s ceremony. He called on everyone in attendance to “find hope, do good and love each other.” A bell tolled 11 times – once for each of the five alumni, as well as for all victims of the attacks, the first responders and rescue workers, veterans and members of the armed forces, COVID-19 victims, in thanks to the Seaford community and in hope for world peace. As the final bell tolled, a helicopter flew over the high school. Thousands of candles were then lit, and the Seaford High School honors chorale performed “God Bless America.”

With Seaford’s 9/11 memorial located directly outside of the high school, it served as an appropriate spot for discussions about an event that is history to today’s students, who were born in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. To commemorate the 20th anniversary, many Seaford High School teachers brought their classes to the memorial on Sept. 10 to see the recovered piece of steel from the World Trade Center, the granite stones and the plaques in honor of the five graduates who died in the attacks – Thomas Haskell, Timothy Haskell, John Perry, Robert Sliwak and Michael Wittenstein. “It’s important to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives,” social studies teacher Jenna Davis said. Seaford’s memorial site honors all of the men and women who lost their lives in the attacks and have died in the years after from 9/11-related

illnesses, as well as the first responders and rescue workers who answered the call to help in the aftermath. Ms. Davis noted that people see the impacts of that day differently as they get older and gain a greater understanding of what happened. She also said it is impactful for the students to go out to the memorial and learn how this affected people from their hometown. It also sparked discussions in her classes on a wide range of issues. In human geography, students talked about how 9/11 changed American culture, while in her government class, they looked at the significance of federal holidays and discussed whether or not Sept. 11 should be one. For a lesson on visual rhetoric, English teacher Tania Cintorino showed students covers of the New Yorker magazine from Sept. 24, 2001 as well as the one-year and 10-year anniversaries

of the attacks. They discussed the messages that the artists were trying to convey. From there, students traveled to the Seaford memorial to look at its design and understand the symbolism of all of its different components. Students then sat around the memorial plaza as Ms. Cintorino shared her recollections of the day, as the attacks occurred during her first September as a Seaford High School teacher. She noted the important of passing along these stories to the next generation. As the years have gone on, she went from having students who lived the attacks with her, to talking about it with those who weren’t even born. “I share with them my own personal perspective, experience and memories,” she said. “Many have heard stories from their families, and it’s important to continue that conversation.”

From end to end, the Seaford High School front lawn was filled with community members who came to pay their respects to all those who died in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, including five alumni – Thomas Haskell, Timothy Haskell, John Perry, Robert Sliwak and Michael Wittenstein. The 20th anniversary memorial ceremony began before dusk and ended after sunset, allowing the candles that were lit near the end of the service to glow bright. Students, teachers, administrators, elected officials, clergy, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, leaders of community organizations and family members of the five alumni were among a crowd estimated at more than 2,000 people. Over the front walk flew a large American flag, hung from the raised ladders of Seaford and Wantagh fire trucks. The colors were presented by the Nassau County Police Color Guard and patriotic music was provided by the Nassau County Police Pipe and Drum Band. After Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, the Seaford High School band, set up among the field of American flags on the north side of the lawn, played the National Anthem. In front of them, firefighters from Seaford and Wantagh, in their crisp uniforms, saluted. Retired Seaford High School Principal Raymond Buckley, in his welcome message, said they were extremely blessed to have a perfect night for the 20th anniversary ceremony. Dr. Pecora said it was heartwarming to have so many people from the Seaford community and beyond in attendance. Former Congressman Peter King, who lives just blocks away from the high school, added that it is testament to the perseverance and lasting courage of the

Seaford Trombone Player Earns All-State Selection As an aspiring music teacher, Seaford High School senior Angela Dean has great appreciation for those who have guided her along the way in becoming an accomplished musician. Angela was recently selected to participate in the 2021 New York State School Music Association’s All-State music festival. Earning an All-State

selection is one of the top honors a high school student musician can achieve, and Angela is invited to the conference in Rochester from Dec. 2-5, which will be held in person for the first time in two years. She will play the trombone in the symphony orchestra. “I’m honored,” she said of the NYSSMA selection.

“This is what I’ve been working towards for years. This will be the first traditional concert since COVID, playing music in a theater, and I’m really looking forward to it.” Typically, All-State auditions are held in person before judges, but due to the pandemic, Angela had to submit videos of a solo performance and of her

playing musical scales. Teacher recommendations and participation in musical performance groups are also factored in for the All-State Selection Committee. Angela, who first picked up the trombone in fourth grade when she joined the band at Seaford Harbor Elementary School, has taken advantage of just about every musical opportunity. At Seaford High School, she is a member of the concert

band, jazz band, field show band, marching band, pep band and symphonic band, as well as the pit orchestra for the annual musical. She also earned induction into the Tri-M Music Honor Society and has received several All-County music selections. In addition to the trombone, she also knows how to play the baritone horn and “dabbles” in piano and guitar. Earning that coveted AllState selection, she said,

is a testament to her band teachers throughout the years – Charlotte Loake at Harbor, Matt Fields and Barbara Sherwin at the middle school, Christopher Coniglio and Anthony Romeo at the high school and Jennifer Iovino, a private instructor. Angela, who is beginning the college selection process, wants to pay it forward and plans to major in music education.
