Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Outreach Support On Saturday, October 8th at Jones Beach, Outreach and the John Brower, Jr. Foundation will host the 2nd annual 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about substance and alcohol abuse in New York, bringing the community together while walking for a cause. The event honors the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk will support Outreach, a non-profit organization

dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The Brower family formed the John Brower, Jr. Foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to

help those struggling with addiction. They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $37,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise

awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than two years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue fighting addiction. Future Plans Wantagh High School students took the next step toward their future by attending the second of three annual minicollege fairs. More than 50 east coast college representatives set up tables packed with information for those students who are exploring their options after graduation. The annual event parallels with the guidance department’s focus on aiding juniors

and seniors in the college application process. Wantagh Guidance Director Frank Muzio explained that the minicollege fairs are excellent ways for students to shop for colleges. “It is a great opportunity for our students to engage in the college process directly with the representatives,” Muzio said. In addition to hosting the fairs, guidance counselors prepare

students for meaningful interactions with the college representatives through individual and group workshops. The high school also hosts a three-part college program, which introduces important terms and procedures, calendar deadlines for applications, tools for students and parents to evaluate colleges, resources and financial aid.

FIRE ISLAND FIELD TRIP - Recently, Packs 96 and 189, of Wantagh, boarded a ferry to Fire Island. Together, they took a Ranger-guided tour of the unique ecosystem of the Sunken Forest. They learned about all the animals that live in the park as well as the special plants that are able to live in such a special environment. The boys identified four different animals for their Call of The Wild requirements and also learned about how climate change is impacting this fragile place. Following the tour, both packs enjoyed a nice picnic on the pristine beach before taking the ferry back to Long Island.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that 20-year special education teacher Kathy DelGais Butler will be inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame during a reception held at Crest Hollow Country Club on Sept. 28. Her photo will hang with Hall of Fame recipients in the newly constructed Nassau Coliseum. DelGais Butler attended Wantagh High School from 1982-1986, where she

played volleyball (captain), basketball and softball. In basketball, she scored 999 points, a Wantagh High School record held until 2015. As a softball player, DelGais Butler was a Long Island windmill pitcher with a career record of 877, which included 2,421 batters faced with 221 hits, 780 strikeouts and 42 walks. Her career ERA was 0.273 in which she pitched one perfect game with 18 strike outs, 20 no-hitters and 15 one-hitters.

Special Commendation In addition to having received the designation of All-County honors in all three sports, DelGais Butler was recognized as a Daily News All-Star (1983-1986) in softball. Sports Illustrated ranked her as 12th in the nation in innings pitched in her senior year at LIU Post, where she also received ECAC first team honors. The Nassau County Pitcher of the Year Award is now named The Kathy DelGais Butler Pitcher of the Year Award, and she was inducted into the New York State Softball Hall of Fame in 2014. Seaford High School senior Michael Pollichino earned a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit® Scholarship Program for high achievement and scholarship. The honor – based on his performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit® Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) – places him among the top five percent of the 1.6 million students across the country that took the test. “This is a well-deserved honor for Michael,” said Seaford High School Principal Scott Bersin. “He

is an outstanding student whose commitment to excellence makes him an exemplary role model for his peers.” Michael is a member of National Honor Society and takes a host of Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level courses. He was named an AP Scholar of Distinction for scoring an average of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scoring a 3 or higher on five or more AP exams. He has competed on the high school wrestling team during all four years of his high school career, is a Freshman Mentor, a

club that helps freshmen acclimate to high school, and plays guitar in Jazz Band. While Commended Students do not advance in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of them will become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. “We wish him the best luck in obtaining a scholarship from the private industry through his National Merit recognition,” Bersin added.
