There will be entertainment for all ages including light refreshments. For adults, musical entertainment will be performed by Robert and Patty Meade. Teen Services will be having a henna tattoo artist and the Children’s Department will have face painting. It was March 2nd, 1957, just over 60 years ago, that the Seaford Public Library officially opened its doors in rented loft space on the second ﬂoor of a building on Nelson Verity Plaza. Over 13,000 volumes of its original book collection were borrowed from the New York State Library. Two years later, the library joined the Nassau Library System, placing the resources of all Nassau libraries at the service of Seaford residents. By June 1960, the Library began a serious search for a more permanent home. The library board purchased the Powell Professional Building at 2234 Jackson Avenue in early 1963. By April 1965, the Seaford Public Library was fully functioning in the building its remains in to the present with space for its collection, a meeting room for the community, display areas for artworks, cultural and historical artifacts and comfortable reading environs. Library Trustee Patricia Coughlin says, “Serving on the Library Board of Trustees during the 60th Anniversary of the Library is a deeply felt honor.” Dr. Mary Westermann, who also serves on the Library Board, acclaims, “Please join us as we celebrate the anniversary of our community’s greatest gift – the Seaford Public Library!”

The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers in Nassau and Suffolk County to be a part of the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event scheduled for Sunday, October 15th at Jones Beach and/or on Sunday, October 22nd at Suffolk County Community College, Eastern Campus, Riverhead. Community volunteers help lead and organize the event with the support of American Cancer Society staff. “From assisting with planning and set up for the annual event to taking part the day-of, there are various volunteer opportunities for interested community members of all ages who want to become involved and earn hours of community service,” said Christine Haskell of the American Cancer Society. Girl Scout Gold

The cumulating project of a Girl Scout’s career is the Gold Award, an 80hour project that will touch many groups in one’s community. Many

equate such a project to the Boy Scouts equivalent of the Eagle Scout (although many girls would love to say that it is significantly harder to earn your Gold).

This past school year, Lauren King from Seaford Troop 3271, worked with both middle and high school students to create a peer music mentoring program. Each week, high school music honor society students would visit Seaford Middle School, working with students on all types of music. From concert music to NYSSMA solos, students increased their musicianship while developing relationships with older students. At the close of the program, students performed for parents and faculty, highlighting their own musical abilities for members of the community to see.

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!
