“How will you make your mark?” That was the question posed to students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District for International Dot Day. Every year, schools across the world celebrate Dot Day on or around Sept. 15 to spread the message of the Peter Reynolds book, “The Dot.” The story is about a teacher who encourages a student to

It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them! In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal. In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger. Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of

Student Technology Initiative With laptops now in the hands of sixth graders, Seaford Middle School has become the first school in the district to have full participation in the 1:1 technology initiative. The HP devices, which can be used both in school and at home, were distributed to more than 160 students on Sept. 12. Seventh and eighth graders returned to school in September with the devices they received last year through the Personalized Digital Learning Initiative. At the high school, 10th and 11th graders also have their devices from last year, with the freshmen class getting their laptops this month. By next year, every student

at the secondary level will have a take-home device. At the two elementary schools, each fourth and fifth grade class has a set of laptops for use in school. Kindergarten through third grade classes share iPad carts. During the laptop handout, sixth graders had to turn in their signed user agreements, which outlined acceptable use policies and computer care. Each student received a stylus and a charger. Thomas Lynch, the executive director for instructional technology and STEM, said that the laptops are very similar to the ones students used last year in fifth grade, operating on the Office 365

platform. In addition to notetaking, word processing and digital presentation programs, the computers allow students to participate in interactive review games such as Kahoot and Quizlet. Mr. Lynch explained that the laptops allow students to keep their classwork well organized, and also provides additional communication opportunities between teachers and students. The devices will be especially beneficial to the sixth graders, as it will help them access content from their electronic textbooks in math and science.

The courtyard at Seaford Harbor Elementary School was transformed into a symbol for peace in a matter of hours on Sept. 23. Throughout the day, students visited the space to place their colorful pinwheels in the ground as they took part in the global Pinwheels for Peace initiative. In the week leading up to World Peace Day on Sept. 21, students decorated their pinwheels, creating personalized designs. They attached pencils and straws so they could stick their pinwheels into the ground upon returning to school from the weekend. By the time the last class went outside, more than 500 pinwheels were spinning. The courtyard is bordered on two sides by the well-traveled hallways leading to the cafeteria, gymnasium, art and music rooms, so students could get a daily reminder of the message of peace and

kindness, social worker Sharon Klein explained. Ms. Klein said that the pinwheel activity kicked off Start With Hello Week from Sept. 23-27, sponsored by the Sandy Hook Promise. The purpose is to create a culture of inclusion that

values each individual at a school through small but powerful actions. “If you reach out and get to know each other,” she said, “you might find out that you had a friend nearby that you didn’t know.”

Music Students Earn All-State Nod Two Seaford High School musicians have been selected to the All-State Music Festival, hosted by the New York State School Music Association. Senior vocalist Carly Corsitto will sing with the Women’s Choir and senior Liam McDonald will play the mallets in the symphonic band. Carly, a soprano, is a member of several vocal groups at Seaford High School including the Chamber Choir and the Select Choir. She is enrolled at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts and attends an afterschool program at the From Stage to Screen Performing Arts Academy. This past summer, she took part in a musical theater program through the

Boston Conservatory at the Berklee College of Music. Liam, a percussionist, performs with Seaford High School’s jazz band, marching band and pep band. He also sings with the Chamber Choir, Select Choir and barbershop ensemble. Outside of school, he is a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra’s Nassau Principal Orchestra as well as the Long Island Youth Orchestra, and attends the Juilliard School’s precollege music program. Over the summer he participated in a summer music festival hosted by the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Both students are members of the Seaford High School drama club and the Tri-M Music Honor

Society, of which Liam is the president. Band Co-Director Anthony Romeo said that Carly and Liam are talented musicians who have an unwavering commitment to their craft, as evidenced by their involvement in ensembles and learning opportunities both in and out of school. The NYSSMA All-State Music Festival, which will be held from Dec. 5-8 in Rochester, is just another milestone for the pair who have already had numerous All-County music selections. “Carly and Liam are musically amazing students,” he said. “We are very proud of their accomplishment, which is a direct result of their hard work and dedication.”
