Eagle Scout Project

obert Sirota, a Boy Scout from Troop 581 in Seaford, had the Dedication of his Eagle Scout Project on September 13th. For his project, he built a Memorial Butterfly Garden at Seaford High School in memory of Joseph Tutaj, a fellow scout and Seaford High student who died while attending a school band trip to California in February of 2013. LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of

Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational, “It is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.” “The support of our event chairs, Bill Baum, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors

Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep

“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…

I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

The Seaford Vikings face off against Friends Academy at Seaford High School’s Homecoming Game, October 11th. Game time is 5 p.m., but spirits will be running high earlier in the day as family and friends come out for the Homecoming parade. Step off time is 3 p.m. at the Seaford Public Library on Jackson Ave. The parade continues east on Merrick Road and north on Washington Avenue to Keily Drive and ends at Seaford High School. This year’s theme is “America through the Decades.” The U. S. Army Color Guard will lead the parade followed by the Grand Marshal, the high school marching band, a convoy of class floats, sports teams, clubs and community organizations. “Homecoming is one of the grandest displays of school and community

pride,” said Seaford Athletics Director Tom Condon. “The Booster Club has selected as this year’s Grand Marshal the Honorable Terence P. Murphy, a lifelong Seaford resident and a ‘Patriot through the Decades’.” Murphy is a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve who has served overseas in Germany, Bosnia, Guatemala, and for the past year in Iraq and Kuwait. In his civilian life, he is a Nassau County District Court Judge presiding over criminal and civil matters. In addition to these duties, he presides over the Nassau County Veterans’ Treatment Court. Active in the community, Murphy coached CYO Basketball, PAL Lacrosse and Soccer and Seaford Little League. He is a frequent guest at school district events and, as a past Commander of the

Seaford American Legion, has promoted the annual Veterans’ Day Field of Honor at the Seaford LIRR station and the 9/11 Seaford High School Memorial Committee’s Field of Honor. As the parade ends at the Seaford High School, the Booster Club will be selling school apparel and refreshments near the football field. The pre-game ceremony will include a tunnel of American flags held by the cheerleaders for the varsity football team’s entry onto the field. The U.S. Army Honor Guard will take the center of the field for the National Anthem played by the Seaford High School Marching Band. A halftime show will recognize the winning float, the Grand Marshal and the Homecoming King and Queen.

Dragon Pride Reigns on the back of decorated convertibles. The high school marching band and cheerleaders led the way as families and Levittown residents gathered on the sides of local streets to show their support. As an annual tradition, senior football players, band members, cheerleaders and kickline members were escorted to the field by a significant other to be honored for their service to the community.
