Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

and possibilities stretched infinitely before us. Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back? Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring. So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

ScholarArtists Named Six exceptionally talented teens attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) have been named by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) as Scholar-Artists for the 2015-2016 school year. The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

District officials were elated to transfer the deed to the Garden Citybased real estate firm The Engel Burman Group, the principals and owners of BK of Seaford LLC, Seaford Waverly Corp. Unable to secure a lessee since 2010, the Seaford Avenue School has sat vacant, causing the district to lose about $400,000 in annual revenues while incurring approximately $100,000 in maintenance costs each year. It was last used to educate Seaford students back in 1981 and was leased to Five Towns College until 1992 and then to Nassau BOCES until 2010. Construction on the Seasons at Seaford condominium complex has begun this week. The two-story structures will each have a lower and upper two-bedroom, twobathroom unit with a floor plan consisting of 1,000 sq. ft. Lower units will also

have a 300 sq. ft. basement. Upper units will have a 300 sq. ft. loft. All upper units will also have an elevator. The property will be equipped with a clubhouse and a heated swimming pool, parking for each unit and manicured grounds. Currently, BK at Seaford LLC, Seaford Waverly Corp has a trailer on-site where prospective buyers can obtain information about the complex. Seaford School District officials finalized the sale of the Seaford Avenue School and property to BK at Seaford LLC, Seaford Waverly Corp., September 18th. The sale paves the way for the construction of a 112-unit Seasons of Seaford condominium complex for ages 62 and “better” on the 5.66 acre site, and infuses muchanticipated revenue into the district. “The sale of the Seaford Avenue School and property has been in the making for several years with many people working together to ensure the proposed use of the property was one that would be the best fit for the community,” said Seaford School Board President Bruce Kahn. “To finalize this sale means that thousands of dollars will potentially be added to our school tax rolls, lowering the burden on our residents, and providing additional resources to enhance our programs and our district for our students.” The revenue from the sale will be placed in a special reserve fund and

Fundraiser in Memory of Brittney The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist

children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. On September 15th, a flash mob consisting of members from across Long Island performed a dancing welcome home for a Massapequa family who was homeless for almost three years due to super storm Sandy. When the Baillie’s family house was destroyed by the storm, they were forced to move in with friends, family, and had to endure the turmoil of moving in and out of multiple rental

homes. To show support for this loving, caring, family, the community rallied together to make their home coming very special. Their daughter, Nicole, a gifted dancer at A Step Above Performance Arts, help coordinate the details. Ashley Magaddino, a talented, award-winning choreographer from A Sep Above Performing Arts, choreographed the amazing welcome home

flash mob dance. The flash mob crew consisted of over 50 dancers ranging in age from five to sixty-five. The dancers donated many hours of their time working hard to learn the dance and practice the routine. According to Nicole, the flash mob was a heartfelt, emotional surprise for her entire family. After the dance was done, Ms. Baillie was so thankful that she broke down in tears.

Fire Prevention Week Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm. The Nassau County Firefighters Museum is helping spread the message, “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm” the theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4th10th, 2015. The national fire alarm code requires a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.

According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics, half of all U.S. home fire deaths occur at night between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., when people are most likely to be sleeping. Having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts in half the risk of dying in a fire. These facts underscore the extreme importance of having working smoke alarms in all bedrooms. “Because fires frequently happen when people are

asleep, having working smoke alarms in every bedroom is a critical part of home fire safety,” said Chief John V. Murray, Chief Instructor for the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center, who notes that three out of every five U.S. home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. “Smoke alarms can make the difference between life and death in

a fire by alerting people in enough time to escape safely, but first they need to be installed in all the required locations, including all bedrooms, and second, they need to be working! Fire Prevention Week presents the perfect opportunity to better educate the public about this potentially life-saving message,” said Murray. The Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center, along with firefighters and safety

advocates nationwide, are joining forces during 2015 Fire Prevention Week, October 4th-10th, to remind Long Island residents to take the following precautions: • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. • Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when

one sounds, they all do. • Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old - or sooner if they don’t respond properly. • Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.
