n September 11th, the Seaford High School Social Studies classes took part in the annual tradition of paying tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, including five from Seaford, by laying red, white and blue carnations at the school’s 9/11 memorial and observing a moment of silence. Pictured is the engraved memorial which stands outside the school. Thanks to all those who participated in commemorating.

Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured
mentally, physically and financially is incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. His love and commitment to his family is nothing short of inspiring. Gianna Raimi, a dance major at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), from the Massapequa UFSD, was recently named a ScholarArtist by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing artist and for superior academic achievement. Gianna’s love of dance can be traced back to her childhood, when she first started dancing in The Nutcracker. She has performed it every year since, even in the coveted role of the Sugar Plumb
Fairy. This might explain Gianna’s preference for ballet. Or it might be her competitive nature. “I like the discipline of ballet,” she says. “You have to strive for perfection.” While she hopes to join a professional ballet company one day, she has explored a number of other forms of dance. “Dance has exposed me to the amazing talent in the world,” she says. “This is such a huge honor,” Gianna says of being named a ScholarArtist. “I’m in extremely talented company.” Beyond the personal accomplishment, the young dancer likes the exposure the award gives to the arts. “It’s fitting for the arts to be acknowledged in this way,” she says. Dance teacher Janice Aguilera describes Gianna as “a ray of sunshine.” Perhaps that’s because of her positive attitude. “She’s always looking to improve,” Aguilera says. “She’s a pleasure to teach.” As a dancer, Gianna has the spirit and perseverance to make it. “She really

volunteers Needed Beginning October 5th, a field of orange will cover the grounds of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Central Nassau (UUCCN) at the corner of Nassau Boulevard and Stewart Avenue when pumpkins from the Navajo reservation in New Mexico are delivered. The sale is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Halloween, October 31st. Homemade baked goods will also be available for purchase. Close to 6,000 pumpkins in various shapes and sizes as well as some variety pumpkins, gourds, and decorative corn are expected. Pumpkins that are grown in a dry climate tend to last longer than those grown in eastern United States. You are welcome to come to take pictures, wander through the
Pumpkin Patch and purchase a pumpkin if you wish. Admission is FREE. Anyone wishing to volunteer to help unload pumpkins from the truck is welcome and appreciated, please come by on October 5th or October 19th between 9 and 11 a.m. This is a perfect time for teens to earn volunteer credits.

It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. GRACE GOES TO SPACE - Grace Day School Students Grades K-8, had an exciting trip to Nassau County’s Cradle of Aviation Museum. Enjoying over 75 air and spacecrafts in 8 exhibit galleries, they toured the museum learning about the history of flight from Roosevelt Field starting out as a small airport to what went wrong on Apollo 13. The students learned about astronaut life in zero gravity and negative effects on the body when experiencing weightlessness for any length of time. After seeing astronaut food, wearing on a real spacesuit and touching over 30 hand-on exhibits, they all enjoyed lunch in The Red Planet, a futuristic mars space station, circa 2040.

Ocean To Sound Relay Bethpage Federal Credit Union, a dedicated supporter of health and wellness initiatives on Long Island, announces its sponsorship of the Greater Long Island Running Club’s 28th Annual Ocean to Sound Relay. The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay, which takes place on Sunday, September 29th, will take runners across both Nassau and Suffolk Counties with 120 teams of eight runners each traversing a 50-mile scenic course stretching from the South Shore to the North Shore of Long Island. This will be the fourth consecutive year Bethpage has sponsored the event. Nearly 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the relay, which will
benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services, money raised from the relay will go directly to support the organization’s Long Island Chapter. Long Island runner Alan End, who founded the relay back in 1985, is the relay director. According to Greater Long Island Running Club President Mike Polansky, “The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is an exciting race for both runners and spectators. We invite you to come down and cheer on your family, friends and neighbors sprinting across Long Island.” The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay starts at Jones Beach State Park and
finishes on the grounds of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. 120 eight-person teams will navigate their way through 15 different Long Island townships starting in Wantagh, traveling through Seaford, Massapequa Park, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Woodbury, West Hills, crossing into Huntington and hitting the Long Island Sound in Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and Syosset, reaching Oyster Bay Cove, and finally hitting Oyster Bay. “The Ocean to Sound Relay is one of the most unique and anticipated events of every year, attracting runners from
the entire tri-state area,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “We’re happy to participate again, and witness some amazing athletic abilities, organized impeccably by the Greater Long Island Running Club, and all for a deserving cause.” There are 15 different categories for runners including men’s, women’s, mixed open, men’s masters, women’s masters, mixed masters, men’s seniors masters, women’s seniors masters, men’s super seniors, women’s super seniors, corporate, law enforcement/ firefighter, physically challenged, one person team, and running for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A gala post race party affectionately called
the “Best Post-Race Party in the Northeast” will take place immediately following the relay at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park on the shoreline of beautiful Oyster Bay Harbor near the finish line, where awards will be presented in each of the individual categories to each member of the top three teams in each category. “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is extremely grateful for the generous support of the Greater Long Island Running Club and Bethpage Federal Credit Union,” said Sara Lipsky, Executive Director of the Long Island Chapter. “It is because of organizations like them, LLS can continue to fulfill its
mission - to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.” The entry fee for the Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is $400 per team ($50 per runner) through September 16th, 2013, which covers entry into the race, a special commemorative t-shirt for each runner, and entry into the post-race party.
