That’s why New York State and Nassau University Medical Center are joining forces with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and the Falls Free® Coalition to celebrate Falls Prevention Awareness Day on September 23rd, 2015 – the first day of Fall. “While falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injury for people 65 years of age and older, they are not an inevitable part of aging. This year’s Fall Prevention Awareness Day theme, Take a Stand to Prevent Falls, seeks to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injury among older adults,” stated Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO. “According to the CDC, in the United States, there were 2.5 million older adult falls in 2013, resulting in 734,000 of these patients being hospitalized, and $34 billion in medical costs (adjusted for inﬂation). “We can change this by bringing greater attention to the many preventive measures that can be easily employed to keep our seniors safe.” Studies show that a

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholarships to help make their futures a little

brighter. In the 18 years of her life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so. The family is asking businesses for their support in this fundraising endeavor. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses that the HELP student-volunteer can pursue, either on a fulltime or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise

has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.

‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd, application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. Currently, about 3,200 of these young men and women are undergraduates at 300 colleges and universities across the nation. Since the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s funds will be redirected to provide awards for college graduates, Black American high school students will no longer have the opportunity to enter the National Achievement Scholarship Program. However, they can still compete for awards when they enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, and they may be eligible to receive awards from UNCF under this new program once they graduate from college. “The history and accomplishments of the National Achievement Scholarship Program are great, and NMSC is proud of the program’s 51 successful years,” said Mr. Timothy E. Recently, National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) and UNCF (United Negro College Fund) announced the establishment of the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program. The new program, which will be administered by UNCF and underwritten by NMSC with funds from the National Achievement® Scholarship Program, will honor and grant financial assistance to high-achieving, underrepresented college graduates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) in the United States. The National Achievement Scholarship Program has recognized and honored academically talented Black American high school students for 51 years. The final group of high school students to be recognized in the program entered college in 2015.

Named a Reward School For the fourth consecutive year, Seaford High School was named a Reward School by New York State’s Education Department in recognition of high student achievement or growth level. “To be awarded this distinction consistently over the past four years is a positive indicator of our continual efforts to improve and grow,” said Superintendent Brian L. Conboy. “To do that in a time of great change in education speaks to the talents of our hardworking faculty, administration, students and parents.” A Reward School is identified by outstanding

student achievement or growth with no significant gaps in achievement among student subgroups. Any subgroup for which a school is accountable, must show adequate yearly progress over two consecutive school years. A Reward School must be among the top 20 percent of schools in the state for English language arts (ELA) and math performance over the last two years and have a four-year graduation rate that exceeds 80%. The school must also exceed the state average for students graduating with either a Regents diploma with advanced designation or a Career

and Technical Education (CTE) endorsement. Reward Schools are classified as either “highest performing” or “highest progressing.” Seaford High School has been named a highest performing school for the past three years, rising above its prior distinction as a highest progressing school. Schools are identified as highest performing based on school-wide proficiency and subgroup proficiency on state assessments and by graduation rates. Schools that are considered highest progressing have shown the highest levels of student growth over the past three years.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has announced that the town is seeking volunteers for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Now entering its 41st year, the VITA Program is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service. “We are currently seeking individuals who would like to dedicate some of their spare time to become a VITA volunteer,” said Supervisor Kate Murray. “Over the past 40 years, VITA volunteers trained by the Town of Hempstead have provided thousands of seniors and residents with limited incomes with invaluable aid.”

Through the VITA program, volunteers are trained and then assigned to town senior centers and local libraries to assist town seniors and residents with limited incomes in the preparation of their federal and state income tax returns. Volunteers are not required to hold any advanced degrees or certifications. Volunteers must have a willingness to work with people, have a keen sense of mathematics, and be available for at least three daytime hours per week during the 10-week program (February, March and part of April 2016). IRS-trained instructors will train volunteers at the Department of Senior Enrichment, located at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead during a multiday training program

Saturday training sessions will be conducted on January 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th, 2016 at the Oceanside Public Library located at 30 Davison Avenue in Oceanside. “In order to ensure that this free program enjoys continued success, I encourage anyone who is able to dedicate at least three hours per week during the upcoming tax season to consider joining this outstanding group of volunteers,” concluded Murray. Game Farm Fall Happenings The Long Island Game Farm will be going into hibernation on Tuesday, October 13th, but the animals aren’t going anywhere just yet. Instead, the zoo has increased its Facebook coupon to $4 off admission and has updated its fall hours and show schedule for the remainder of the season. At the largest combined Children’s Zoo and Wildlife Park on Long Island, guests can see hundreds of animals and get up close and personal with some of their favorite exotic critters. Visitors to the free Leapin’ Lemur Tour at Lemur Circle will have the opportunity to learn about these creatures, which hail from the African subcontinent. Each day, an animal expert from the Game Farm will discuss the lemurs’ habitat, what they eat and how they communicate. Park attendees are also invited to visit the Zebra, Cougar and Giraffe exhibits to learn some fun facts about these furry friends. Guests can additionally

receive a one-on-one Camel Encounter with a zookeeper and the park’s very own camels, Sandy and Sahara. During this event, guests can feed the camels a healthy snack and take photos with them. The Animal Education staff will be there to answer any questions and to share interesting facts about these “ships of the desert.” Tickets can be purchased at the Encounter or from the souvenir stand for $5. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for ﬂood insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review. The last day to submit claims is now October 15th, 2015. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today that any additional ﬂood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative. Federal agencies cannot provide disaster assistance for losses covered by insurance. HUD’s announcement stated that

“this will eliminate the need for HUD grantees to reclaim assistance from these households or to repay those funds through non-federal sources. To date, three out of four National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claimants have received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment.” Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation, encouraged policyholders to call FEMA and request a review if they believe their

claims were underpaid for any reason. As of September 14th, nearly 14,000 policyholders have requested reviews of their Sandy ﬂood insurance claims. “FEMA remains committed to making sure that every policyholder gets every dollar they are owed under their ﬂood insurance policy. Already, thousands of policyholders have contacted us to have their claims reviewed and we have begun providing funds to those who were due additional payments on their claim,” Wright said.

“We are hopeful that HUD’s action to provide relief to the vast majority of those who are concerned about potential duplicative benefits will encourage even more policyholders who may have been initially reluctant to enter the process to do so,” Wright said. “In light of HUD’s decision to simplify this review and provide relief, we are extending the claims review deadline until October 15th. We hope by extending the deadline we are addressing any remaining concerns some may have about entering the claims review

FEMA is dead set on restoring trust in this important program and no one should be discouraged from having their claim reviewed.” Policyholders can call the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday to request a review. It is important to have your policy number and insurance company name when you call.

The downloaded form can be filled out and e-mailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202.646.7970 to begin the review process.
