Life’s Next Great Adventure “Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all.” – Helen Keller As I awaken on the morning of my forty-fourth birthday I am reminded of the first thought that crossed my mind four years ago, on the morning of my fortieth birthday. The thought was this: “Okay kid, the first half of the ride is over. What are you going to do with the second half? You’d better make it count.” I knew immediately that for all the accomplishments I’d achieved up until that point - becoming a professional writer, some travel, motherhood, great times with people I love, some spiritual growth - one thing that seemed to be missing in that moment was my next great adventure. I’d always been fascinated by horses and felt a sense of peace around them. I wanted to further explore that connection. I immediately went down to a local horse ranch in Melville, called Thomas School of Horsemanship, and signed up for horseback riding lessons.

I’ll never forget the way my heart pounded and the initial fear I felt as I mounted a horse for the very first time. It was a combination of, “My God, this animal is big and high off the ground!” and “I’m doing it! I’m learning to ride a horse.” At the close of my first lesson, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so accomplished and proud to have tried something new and unfamiliar. Now, four years later, riding horses is as natural to me as breathing; it is my sanctuary. I enjoy riding English-saddle when I am in New York, and Western saddle when I am in Florida. When I am on a horse, the chaos of 21st century life melts away and things feel simple and beautiful. We all need that sacred retreat in our lives; something to look forward to that takes us out of our daily routine and allows us to be pure joyful consciousness. You elected to come into this physical plane to experience all that being human has to offer. Fill your life with as many moments as you can that make you feel alive. As I write this column, I

suddenly got an image in my mind from a scene in the iconic 1985 movie, Back to the Future (one of my all-time favorites). Doc Brown points to three illuminated dates on a screen, on the DeLorean Time Machine’s dashboard. He explains to Marty, “This one tells you where you are; this one tells you where you’re going; this one tells you where you’ve been.” If you visualize your mind as a camera, you can choose to pan out for a wider shot of your life. It’s a great exercise and offers the gift of perspective to examine where you are, where you’re going and where you’ve been. Try to see your life from that higher perspective. You will gain some clarity and inspiration that may direct you towards your life’s next great adventure. For many of us who are in our forties and beyond, the first half of the ride may indeed be behind us, but the second half, backed by earned wisdom, can be filled with unlimited new experiences if you allow it. Your life’s next great adventure is just one bold decision away.

Craig T. Nelson on Book Club and Incredibles 2 By Allison Kugel

From playing football fanatic, Hayden Fox, on the long running sitcom Coach; Zeek Braverman on Parenthood; and countless big screen roles, actor Craig T. Nelson’s career has been as versatile as it is prolific. It was his voice work in 2004’s Disney Pixar movie, The Incredibles, that introduced Nelson to a young audience. His voice is so recognizable as the voice of Mr. Incredible, that the world stops spinning for a beat whenever a starstruck child hears him speak. Nelson recently played Mary Steenburgen’s husband in the romantic comedy, Book Club and resumed his role as Mr. Incredible in Incredibles 2. Allison Kugel: What does an ensemble piece like Book Club allow you to do as an actor?

Allison Kugel: Book Club addresses that mid-to-later-life slump that people can slide into without even realizing it’s happening. How do you think men experience this phase of life differently from women? Craig T. Nelson: I think we experience it in much the same way. It depends

Allison Kugel: In Book Club, your wife, played by Mary Steenburgen, is upset because she feels your marriage has fallen into a slump. Do you think marriage should be able to go through its natural ebbs and flows? Craig T. Nelson: If you’re married to your best friend, as I am, you have to realize you’re going to have ups and downs. You’re physically going to change, emotionally you’re going to change. You have to adapt and be prepared for that stuff. That’s also part of the adventure. It seems like just yesterday I was talking to older actors about aging. I was a young working actor, and they were all telling me how difficult it was for them, and how they were approaching a period in their life where they felt they weren’t working as much. When it started happening to me, I think I was prepared for it to a certain degree. Allison Kugel: People may not know that you began your career as a standup comedian. Craig T. Nelson: Barry Levinson and

I did stand up [comedy] together for four years, and then another guy, Rudy DeLuca, joined us. We wrote and performed comedy, and then we worked with Tim Conway, John Byner and Alan King. That’s how I started in the business. Allison Kugel: How did that experience inform how you approach a role? Craig T. Nelson: I was never really interested in doing standup comedy. Barry Levinson and I were in the Oxford Theatre together, which was a theatre group in LA. We got to talking and Barry said, “Why don’t we do a standup act?” I had never done that and never even thought of it, but we put an act together. We went out and auditioned and started doing clubs. It was an intro into the business, and I met so many incredible people during that time. It does give me a different perspective on acting. Comedy helped me to enlarge and be better at what I did. Another important thing is that you just get better as you get older. I’m so much more comfortable in a scene now than I ever was. There are so many experiences and so many people to draw on. It’s a wonderful place to be. Allison Kugel: This is not your first time playing Mary Steenburgen’s husband. You also played husband and wife in the 2009 movie, The Proposal, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. How was it playing her husband again in Book Club? Craig T. Nelson: She’s so much fun to work with. She’s got this wonderful quirkiness to her that is so beautiful. It’s also very challenging, because you need to stay on top of your game with her, as with all the actresses in this film. I’ve worked with Diane [Keaton], I’ve worked with Jane [Fonda], I hadn’t met Candice [Bergen] until this film, so that was neat. I look forward to continuing to work with Mary. There is an understanding between me and Mary. You’re able to ask questions of each other or address problems in a scene together. There’s no wandering around, trying to get to the truth of something. Allison Kugel: Let’s switch gears and discuss Incredibles 2! In the first movie, The Incredibles, your character, Mr. Incredible is struggling with living life as a civilian. He’s dying to be a superhero again and to use his powers. Holly Hunter’s character, Elastigirl, wanted a normal family life. In Incredibles 2, it’s reversed. She’s

out being a superhero and you’re the stay-at-home dad. How does that go for Mr. Incredible? Craig T. Nelson: He doesn’t quite understand it and is feeling rejected, like, “Why don’t they want me out there?” He now has to take a back seat and for him that’s difficult. He makes the sacrifice for his wife. He’s got a resentment going on, but as you watch him at home you get to know these kids in a way that’s fun and interesting. And you get to see a guy have to adapt and get to know his children in a way that he hasn’t. That was neat for me to play. Allison Kugel: How do you get into character when you’re voicing Mr. Incredible? Craig T. Nelson: You prepare ahead of time in the session, especially vocally because there are a lot of different ranges you have to get to. There are scenes when you’re doing a lot of yelling and shouting. And it’s a long and involved process that’s complexly different from regular acting.

recognize the voice, it’s interesting. And then you have to convince this kid that you are! And you feel like an idiot trying to get a seven-year-old to believe you (laughs). They look at you with this wonder, yet at the same time disbelief. It gets confusing even for me. Allison Kugel: My nine-year-old is obsessed! He loved both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, when it hit theatres this summer. Craig T. Nelson: The special FX are extraordinary. Since 2004 when the original movie was out, they’ve developed a whole new range of different processes that have gone into this second movie, including its color enrichment. For me, the exciting thing about the second movie is the character Jack Jack, the baby, really comes alive and that’s going to be so much fun for people to see. What’s so great about this movie is that it’s a family deal. You can take your family to this movie and have a great time. And same with Book Club. It’s two movies I’m proud to let my family watch.

Allison Kugel: I’m sure you’ve watched the first movie, The Incredibles, with your grandchildren. What do they think of you playing Mr. Incredible?

Yes, we are living longer, but there’s more pressure. I suppose it’s how that manifests in each of us, which has to do with our own personality. There’s a lot of pressure to be young. But there is also a lot of pressure being old, not to get any older. I think that is so screwed up.

New Teachers Tour Seaford New teachers in the Seaford School District had an experience that will help them relate to their students — they rode the yellow school bus. As part of their introduction to the district, the teachers received a tour of Seaford on August 27th, led by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel, John Striffolino. Seaford Historical Society and asked trivia questions about the community. The district welcomes 22 new faculty members this year who will teach a variety of subjects and grade levels at the four schools. While some of the new teachers have held different positions, 16 are brand new to the district. Orientation included a review of safety and security procedures, district policies, support services for students and parentteacher communication

protocols. Teachers also learned about technology systems and resources, and spent time with their building principals. The United Teachers of Seaford provided lunch and an informational session. “We want our new teachers to get acclimated quickly and have a smooth beginning to the school year,” Mr. Striffolino said. “This is a great group with a lot of energy. We are excited to have them join our educational family.”

Award winning journalist Geralyn Lucas, author of Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy and Then Came Life, will speak at the Annual Celebration of Survivorship Evening of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Both of Lucas’s memoirs were translated around the world and received starred reviews in Library Journal. The television film production of Lipstick garnered an Emmynomination and was an Entertainment Weekly “Must Watch of the Week.” Geralyn’s story was also

Joining her are three other breast cancer survivors: Jeff Flynn of East Meadow, who is a former support group member and currently a hotline volunteer responding to calls from men concerned about breast cancer; Jamaicanborn Sonia Avery-Williams of Rockville Center, who is a nurse; and Susan Leach, also of Rockville Center, a former support group member and manager at a health care agency. The free event will be held on Thursday, October 18th at Adelphi University’s University Center. Doors will open at 6 pm and speakers begin at 7 pm. A light supper will be served and there will be raffles. In addition, the breast cancer organization, Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, will be

honored. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope’s partnership with the Adelphi program supports their mutual goal to provide assistance to women who would otherwise not have access to quality breast cancer treatment. Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the co-founder of KROH, was diagnosed when she was 32. She says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed with the support of her family and excellent medical care. Many women do not have such support so she was determined to help. She and her husband, George Raptis, and sister, Despina Yarian, established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013. Child Abuse Prevention Services Seeks Volunteer Presenters Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), Long Island’s leading volunteer organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and bullying, is looking for concerned individuals to present their acclaimed classroom programs on bullying, Internet safety and child abuse prevention, to students in the coming school year. “The demand for CAPS workshops continues to grow, so it is urgent that we find more volunteers to join our mission of working together to keep every child safe from harm,” states Alane Fagin, Executive Director. “We can do something to prevent child abuse and bullying! We know that students who are exposed to prevention education early, and throughout

their school years, are better prepared to respond when faced with a difficult situation.” Comprehensive training is provided to prospective volunteers to present CAPS workshops in schools across Long Island. Training sessions for new volunteers for the upcoming school year are still being scheduled throughout the remainder of September. Voters in the 18th

Assembly District have an opportunity to elect someone with just such promise: Taylor Raynor. Raynor grew up in Uniondale and attended its schools, a springboard to attending Spelman College and obtaining a master’s degree in industrial psychology from Hofstra University. Raynor is challenging 30-year incumbent Earlene Hooper for the Democratic nomination in the September 13th primary, a contest that will determine the ultimate winner for this overwhelmingly Democratic district. Hooper’s lack of transparency is so bad she’s even invisible in her district. There are about

133,000 residents in the 18th AD, and Hooper has failed most of them, except for the anointed few in her Hempstead inner circle. Hooper has shamelessly blocked Freeport’s attempts to have its armory transferred to the village, preferring to have it delivered to a favored church group. Her lack of leadership in the continuing crisis in the Hempstead school district is another reason to make a change. She tried to block a $1.5 million anti-poverty grant from being administered by the United Way so she could have more control over it.

Carle Place Scholarship Recipient The Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA) has awarded its 2018 Nicholas J. Bartilucci Manhattan College Scholarship to Raymond DeSimone of Carle Place, New York. Open to entering freshmen enrolled full-time in any engineering degree program at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY, Mr. DeSimone, a Carle Place High School graduate, applied for and was awarded this coveted annual scholarship based on his academic credentials and extracurricular activities. NSWCA President and

Westbury Water District Commissioner Vincent Abbatiello presided over the ceremony and stated, “This annual scholarship honors the memory of the late Nicholas J. Bartilucci, a towering figure in the Long Island water industry who passed away in 2016. By recognizing and enabling outstanding engineering students such as Raymond DeSimone, we continue to keep Nick’s passion for engineering education a tangible reality.” Held at Angelina’s restaurant in Williston Park, NSWCA President Abbatiello acknowledged during the award

presentation ceremony the involvement and assistance of NSWCA Treasurer and Carle Place Water District Commissioner Lawrence F. While the weather may have suggested otherwise, summer vacation was over and a new school year began in the Seaford School District. Whether they walked to school with their parents, came by bus or drove a car decorated in green and white, students were smiling as they arrived on Sept. 4 and were enthusiastically greeted by administrators, teachers and staff. The Seaford High School parking lot was filled with cars with “SEN19R” written in green and white on the back windows. In addition to wearing matching shirts, that was how the Class of 2019 showed their spirit to begin their final year. New high school art teacher Melinda DiGiovanna said she felt

the energy as she walked through the halls and met her photography, media and studio art students. “All of the students coming in have been very excited and very receptive to the activities I have planned for this year,” she said. “I have felt very welcomed here. Everyone is so happy and that makes me excited to come to school.” Seaford Harbor Elementary School fifthgrader Cameron Calderaro said she was glad to be back at school to see her friends and meet her new teachers. She is looking forward to developing her math and reading skills, going on field trips, and being a leader in the school. “You have to set the example for all the kindergartners and the

First Day of School younger kids,” she said. Several fifth-grade volunteers at Harbor met kindergartners as they got off the bus to take them to their classrooms for the first time. The new students had name tags with one of five symbols that corresponded to their classroom — an apple, a school bus, a star, a frog and a friendly bee. Seaford’s seventh- and 10th-grade students came to school for the first time with their laptops, part of the district’s new Personal Digital Learning Initiative. Sixth- and ninth-graders will soon receive their devices, as will fifth-graders for use in the classroom. The program will expand the opportunities for technology-based instruction.

Vanderbilt’s Storied “Alva” Yacht William K. Vanderbilt II (1878-1944) spent years dreaming of and designing his 264-foot yacht Alva. The ship, named after his mother, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, was custombuilt at the KruppGermaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany. On August 5th, the Vanderbilt Museum marked the 75th anniversary of the yacht’s wartime service and recalled its tragic sinking on August 5, 1943. Aboard the Alva, steaming out of Kiel on March 5, 1931, William and Rosamond Vanderbilt began the ship’s inaugural voyage from Europe to Miami and then New York. The trip was preparation for their epic seven-month circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the voyage, Mr. Vanderbilt collected marine life, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for his Centerport museum. Ten years, later, just before the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked yacht owners to donate their boats to the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vanderbilt answered the call. On November 4, 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, he gave

the Alva to the Navy, which converted it to a patrol gunboat. The ship was renamed the USS Plymouth (PG 57). The Vanderbilt family had served in every major conflict since the War of 1812. In 1917, William Vanderbilt was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. From May 9 to October 1, 1917, he patrolled U.S. coastal waters in his ship Tarantula II. (The following details of the Alva’s life as the USS Plymouth are from the Vanderbilt Museum archives and from Uboat. net, a history website based in Iceland with contributing writers from Germany, the United States, Canada and Europe.) On April 20, 1942, the Plymouth was commissioned and based in Norfolk, Virginia. Assigned to the Inshore Patrol Squadron in the 5th Naval District, she made several convoy escort voyages between New York, Key West, and Guantanamo, Cuba, during 1942-43. On the evening of August 5, 1943, the Plymouth was escorting a ship convoy 120 miles southeast of Cape Henry, Virginia. The ship’s sonar gear

alerted the captain and crew of underwater movement in the vicinity. Moments later, the Plymouth was spotted in the periscope of U-566, a German submarine. The sub launched a torpedo at 9:37 p.m. “The gunboat had made an underwater sound contact while escorting a coastal convoy,” the Uboat. net entry reported. “Just as the ship swung left to bear on the target, she was struck just abaft the bridge. The ship rolled first to starboard, then took a heavy list to port with the entire port side forward of amidships in flames and sank within two minutes.” Of the Plymouth’s 179 officers and men, only 84 survived. They were picked up in heavy seas by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Calypso and arrived in Norfolk on August 6. The commander, Lt. Ormsby M. Mitchel, Jr., was thrown violently against a bulkhead by the explosion. He sustained serious injuries, which later required amputation of his left leg. Despite his own condition, he directed abandon-ship operations and remained at his post until the ship went down. Mitchel was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism.
