Raynham Hall Offers Virtual Field Trips Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that historic Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay will continue to offer ‘virtual field trips’ for classes for many schools in the area to continue to highlight the stories of resiliency during the Revolutionary War from Robert Townsend and his compatriots as members of George Washington’s spy ring. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,

Councilman Imbroto added, “It’s no secret that the Town enjoys the finest municipal workforce around, and now it’s clear that we also enjoy the most heroic. Christopher Madden went above and beyond the call of duty and saved Vincent’s life. I am honored to publicly commend Christopher for his amazing and courageous actions.”

Fortunately, there’s an easy action you can take to prevent this from happening, and it is to apply decals that reﬂect ultraviolet sunlight to your home’s windows, particularly those windows that are highly reﬂective of open sky. Doing so has been proven to substantially reduce the likelihood of bird strikes. 5 Tips to Prepare for Window Replacement

Winter is coming, and for millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm. Inefficient or aging housing materials may compromise your ability to do just that. Drafts from doors, poorly protected attics and basements and aging windows may force heating systems to work extra hard to maintain interior temperatures. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.

When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Questions can include: • How long will the project take? • Will I need to remain home during the process? • Do you discard of old debris? • What is the protocol for installation during inclement weather? 2. Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson joined with researchers from the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences to discuss recent shark activity, as well as their efforts in studying sharks and tracking their movements in local waters. In recent weeks, there have been over a dozen reported sightings from several beaches, which

suspected several different shark species. This resulted in swimming restrictions on almost a daily basis at local beaches, including TOBAY. Officials reminded residents that beach staff both in and out of the water make their safety and protection their top priority, and outlined steps taken by lifeguards, bay constables and other marine units patrolling waters. “While it may be a little

unnerving to hear about shark sightings and the topic can definitely be a scary one, it’s important for us to understand that sharks are naturally found in Long Island waters,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our greatest tool is education, and the research being conducted by the Stony Brook School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences helps us better understand shark activity.” The Supervisor noted

that researchers, headed by principal investigator Dr. Michael Frisk, worked with the Town earlier this summer to arrange a research program off TOBAY’s shoreline. Dr. Frisk’s group, consists of multiple doctoral students including newly doctorate student Dr. Oliver Shipley, PhD student Lisa Crawford and Research Technician Michael Fogg. The group studies movements and broader ecology throughout

the coast and is conducted with a goal to establish knowledge of coastal-wide shark movement, as well as how these change over the summer months. Councilwoman Johnson further explained that while shark attacks are extremely uncommon in our region, there are steps beachgoers can take to protect themselves and be careful in the water. “In addition to avoiding wearing shiny jewelry, not

swimming during night or dusk hours, and not wandering off from shore, general precautions and common sense are often our most important tool when enjoying our ocean waters,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Remember to stay safe and listen to the guidance of beach and lifeguard staff. We share our waters with some amazing creatures, and we just have to make sure we do so safely and appropriately.”

Get Ahead of Chimney Repair This Season Woodburning fireplaces or fuel stoves can add warmth and ambiance to a home. These appliances are particularly coveted in the cooler months when people spend more time indoors. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the ﬂue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps, states Vertical Chimney Care. • Conduct a visual inspection of the chimney to check for any cracks or spalling. Spalling is the wearing

away of masonry due to water, weather and time. If enough of the material erodes, that erosion can adversely affect the structural integrity of the chimney. Some repairs can be made by patching up cracks or replacing missing bricks. Chimney tuckpointing is the process of repairing mortar.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org.
