My Summer Slumber Buddy here, checking in on behalf of my Human, who has just returned from one of those “vacation” outings I detest so much. You would think, after over 18 months of residence, I would have earned the right to tag along on a trip; but alas, Buddy the Betta was abandoned yet again, left to my own devices. Don’t get me wrong, the solitude is nice on occasion. No Human faces pressed up against the glass making fishy faces, no incessant tapping on the counter to get my attention, no bath times to contend with… but eventually, a fish does become lonely. Every morning, I would wake from my slumber expecting to be greeted with the usual love and adoration – and breakfast, of course. But nothing. Days passed, and all I found was a measly dissolving chalk-like thing with flakes embedded in it. At first, I thought it was a pillow; but eventually, I realized this was the best option on the menu for me for the time being. Speaking of bizarre sleeping

choices, it seems that every time my Human overhauls the tank to clean my gravel and my beloved plant, she never puts things quite back where she found them. Gone are my cozy nooks to snuggle in; replaced instead by mounds of pebbles. This has forced me to explore other options, among them, the top of the filter, where one strong current can send me sailing to a spot of rest just below the water line. Comfy indeed. Of course, when my Human forgets to replenish my water from time to time, I find myself hanging off the side, seemingly in a state of unrest. But not to worry, I can sleep just about anywhere, in any position. That includes laying on a leaf, wrapped around the filter tube, or just about vertical, face pressed against the gravel. Just turn my light off and “Do Not Disturb” – a fish needs his beauty rest, especially one as lovely as me. The last time I had nestled in for the night – or morning, as it were – I was rudely awakened by calls of “bath time for Buddy!”

Being the stubborn sort, I wrapped my fins firmly around the filter tube and refused to budge, gleefully watching as my Human tried to nudge me out of my corner with the back end of a spoon. Only when she began to lift the filter out with me on top of it did I realize that this was a losing battle. Little did I know that this particular bath was in preparation for the vacation I was not to be invited on. Talk about adding insult to injury. On a somewhat positive note, my Human did leave the light on for me, since I seem to flit around with more ease when my tank is illuminated. Better yet, when she returned, I was rewarded with “bonus” flakes for being such a good boy while she was gone – you know, not getting sucked into the filter or anything. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) is one of the world’s largest soccer leagues, and the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), with 1,600 travel teams - equally divided between boys and girls - in Suffolk, Nassau and Queens. In 1965, Pat Ryder became President of the Long Island Soccer Football League (LISFL) and he made a concerted effort to have adult league teams assist in the development of youth soccer. Although some LISFL clubs responded, it was not until Jack Maher of the Deer Park Celtics wrote to Ryder to request the formal formation of the LIJSL that the ball really started rolling. Ryder appointed Maher the first Commissioner of the LIJSL. Eight boys teams kicked off the new league in December 1966 and played throughout that winter to complete a 14-game schedule by March 1967. This was the same

New administrators have started the school year in three Seaford School District buildings, a change spurred by retirements and efforts to restore positions lost to the economic downturn seven years ago. Former Seaford Middle School Assistant Principal Thomas Burke took the helm as principal of Harbor Elementary School, replacing Donna DeLucia-Troisi who retired in June. Caroline Schozer, who split her time as assistant principal between the Harbor and Manor elementary schools, began the year as a full-time assistant principal at the Harbor School. The change came after voters approved a full-time assistant principal position at the Manor School in the 20162017 school budget last May. “I’m excited to come back to an elementary school setting and lead young students who are just starting to read and write,” Burke said. “They’re like sponges.” To get acquainted with students and parents, Burke and Schozer conducted a “Meet and Greet,” August 26, which provided an opportunity to ask questions in a more informal setting. As parents asked about school supplies and building procedures, students, mostly in the primary grades, displayed a range of reactions when meeting their new principal and assistant principal. Standing at 6 feet-tall, Burke bent down to hear first-grader Abigail Wind coyly whisper her name in his ear while C.J. Romain, a second- grader, happily took a photo with the new administrative team. Students also filled a suggestion box with what they like about the Harbor and what they would like to change. “We wanted to provide a way to engage students and to show them that their opinions matter,” Schozer said. “We’re taking baby steps to create a new look and feel to the school.” Burke and Schozer will be launching a school-wide

What she looks forward to most about coming to the Manor School is “watching every child grow as a whole person in their academics and in their character,” she said. “I always have a book of the month on display in my office. This month’s selection is ‘What Do You Do with an Idea?’” It creates a shared experience and builds community within the classroom.” Before coming to Seaford she was an elementary teacher in the North Bellmore Union Free School District where she taught grades three through six. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office recently teamed up with the Nassau/Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America (NSASA) to provide Project Lifesaver equipment at a greatly reduced cost to families who otherwise could not afford the initial outlay. Nearly 2,300 K-12 students carrying backpacks, school supplies and lunchboxes returned to Seaford Public Schools, September 6th, prepared for a new year of learning. Doors opened with 21 new staff members, additions to instruction and technology, and some minor capital improvement projects, thanks to voter approval of the 2016-2017 school budget in May. The year also started with new benchmarks for achievement as a record number of high school students received Advanced Placement scholar awards and the high school experienced a graduation rate of 94.9 percent, the highest in nearly a decade. Instructionally, high school students began the year with more course selections, including a new Advanced Placement course in Human Geography, a second-level course in Science Research and Biotechnology for students who completed the introductory course, a new woodworking course, new SAT math course, and an option for seniors to take two half-year English courses, rather than one for the entire year. Middle School students have new Exploratories (electives) to choose from, including those in chemistry, ecology, growing up female, and drama and theatre. Sixth graders have more math instruction built into

Heading Back their schedules to help ensure greater success and for more consistency, seventh graders will enjoy foreign language every other day throughout the school year, rather than having it for half the school year. With the success of the Robotics Club at the high school level, the middle school will start its own Robotics Club this year. Elementary programs include an expanded science program that consists of earth science and physical

science, in addition to its whole life science program in which students study the life cycle of live animals. An elementary ELA Committee that was formed last year will continue their work to review and evaluate the K-5

literacy program. Moving into the fifth year of a five-year technology plan, the district will enhance its technology infrastructure by doubling its bandwidth, a requirement under the State’s Smart Schools initiative. Other upgrades include updated SMART technology in high school classrooms, the expanded use of Microsoft Office 365, a web-based software technology introduced last spring to enhance learning in school and at home, and a more cost effective Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system. Minor capital improvements include the refinishing of the Manor School stage and gym floors at both elementary schools, asbestos abatement in the middle school library and band storage areas, carpeting in the middle school library and the replacement of ceiling tiles throughout the middle school as needed. “We are very proud to begin the school year with additions to our faculty, our instructional program and with technology upgrades that support our program,” said Superintendent Brian L. Conboy. “I wish all of our students and staff a productive and successful school year, and look forward to working with the Seaford community to bring our district and our students to new levels of success.”

Celebrating 50 Years of Soccer who died this past May, also received the Life Member Award from US Soccer, the organization’s version of the Lifetime Achievement Award. On the player development front, seven LIJSL teams have won the national championship: Girls-Under-16 Sachem Tomahawks, Girls-Under-16 and Girls-Under-18 Northport/Cow Harbor Piranha, Girls-Under-19 Massapequa Falcons, Boys-Under-16 Smithtown Arsenal, Boys-Under-17 West Babylon Panthers and Boys-Under-19 Massapequa Arsenal. Although only a few LIJSL players have the ability to win the national championship or play professional soccer, all

have the ability to learn the values of sportsmanship, teamwork and perseverance while participating in a

The team in each division with the most points at the end of the Spring and Fall Seasons receives the highly-regarded LIJSL Sportsmanship Award and their players proudly wear a LIJSL Sportsmanship patch on their shirt as a symbol of this achievement. The first high school all-star competition, the Exceptional Senior Games, was started by the LIJSL in 1981. The games continue every November on Long Island although the LIJSL

has passed the torch to organizing the competition to the high school associations in Suffolk and Nassau counties. In 1983, the LIJSL Convention started and it attracts 10,000 soccer fans every March to the Huntington Hilton. The convention, high school all-star competition, sportsmanship program and TOPSoccer Program have since been copied by other leagues across the country and even outside the United States. Winthrop-University Hospital’s Perinatal Bereavement Team invites you to join in support of family and friends whose lives have been touched by the tragic loss of an unborn or newborn child at the 13th annual Walk to Remember on Saturday, October 1st, at Field 5 of Eisenhower Park in East Meadow at 9:00 a.m. Held in recognition of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month, which aims to increase the community’s understanding of the grief associated with the loss of an unborn or newborn child, The Walk to Remember is just under one mile. This annual memorial event, the only walk of its kind on Long Island, enables parents, relatives and friends who have lost

a child due to pregnancy complications, stillbirth, early infant loss or fetal abnormalities to walk in remembrance of their loved one. In addition to the walk, the day includes a light breakfast, a memorial service, and an opportunity for parents to share their memories through a personal page for inclusion in the Walk to Remember Scrap Book, displayed at the walk. In addition, big brothers and big sisters are invited to make their own scrap book page for inclusion in a separate memory book. Any individuals who wish to create a personal memory page are asked to bring it with them the day of the walk. The maximum page size is 12” x 12.” At the conclusion of the walk, special certificates of remembered are given to

each family. A donation of $15 per person is requested by September 23, 2016; children under 12 years of age may participate for free. Checks should be made payable to “Winthrop-University Hospital.” All proceeds benefit Winthrop’s Perinatal Bereavement Team, which is dedicated to providing education, comfort and support to help families cope with the loss of a child.
