It has been a difficult time for many, as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way in which we have been permitted to assemble for a host of services, ceremonies, activities and events. While some governments have decided to scale back their September 11th ceremonies in the face of the Coronavirus, the Town of Hempstead has decided to move ahead with Long Island’s iconic seaside 9/11 memorial program. Hosted by Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and the Town Board, friends, neighbors, clergy, family members of victims and all of those impacted by the events of September 11th will gather in a socially distanced and safe manner for a sunrise ceremony that will salute the heroes of 9/11. The program will feature a speech by a family member of a late NYPD detective who died of a 9/11-related illness, and was known for his

advocacy for fellow heroes of September 11th. Hempstead Town’s 9/11 Memorial Park includes ocean views, an elevated memorial walkway, a 30-foot-tall beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center, and a giant memorial table inscribed with Walt Whitman’s “On the Beach at Night.” The names of victims are etched on the monument and a directional plaque points to the location of the once majestic Twin Towers. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.

As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Seaford’s Patriot Award Is Pride For Five

Five Seaford High School graduates were recognized for their service, commitment and character with the Patriot Award, presented by the Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee. Erica Albert, Matt Karounos, Jessica Kofod, Logan Masters and Chris Surace were recognized during the Aug. 6 graduation ceremonies on the school’s front lawn. The Patriot Award is given in honor of the five Seaford High School graduates who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks – Thomas Haskell (Class of 1982), Timothy Haskell (1985), John Perry (1982), Robert Sliwak (1977) and Michael Wittenstein (1985). The five recipients are chosen from dozens of applicants for best

embodying the traits of those five men. Erica, Matt, Jessica, Logan and Chris each received a monetary scholarship. In the 19 years that the award has been presented, the 9/11 Memorial Committee has given out more than $200,000 to almost 100 Seaford graduates. Tom Condon, the district’s retired athletic director and a founder of the committee, noted the similarities between the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2002, which contained the first group of Patriot Award recipients. That class graduated in the aftermath of 9/11 venturing into an unknown world, much like the current graduates who are experiencing life in a pandemic. “You are well prepared

to meet all the challenges ahead of you,” he told the graduates, “because you are Seaford pride.” Ken Haskell, president of the 9/11 Memorial Committee, joined Mr. Condon for the awards presentations. His brothers, Tommy and Timmy, were both New York City firefighters who responded to the towers on 9/11. In his remarks to a class that had its senior year interrupted, Mr. Haskell explained that a defining characteristic for a person is how well he or she can respond to adversity. The Patriot Award celebrates students who have demonstrated exceptional character, a desire to serve their community and a commitment to helping others. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that Nassau County will commemorate the 19th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a Remembrance and Recitation of Names Ceremony on Thursday, September 10th, beginning at 4:30 pm at the 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park. While all are invited to honor those lost in-person, due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, residents are encouraged to attend this year’s ceremony virtually by watching live on the County’s website: N a s s a u c o u n t y n y. g o v / September11. During the ceremony, access to the 9/11 Memorial will be prioritized for family members of the victims of the attacks, along with first responders who continue

to make sacrifices to secure our freedom and safety. “The passing of time will not dim the memory of that day or weaken the spirit of our residents and heroic first responders,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “We will honor the bravery and heroism shown by our firstresponders and everyday people who stepped up during a time of crisis, while commemorating and reflecting on those we lost and continue to lose.” The Remembrance Ceremony will include surviving family members reading of names of residents who lost their lives in the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park features plaques inscribed with the names of the 348 Nassau County victims who lost their lives on that day,
