Hempstead Town will host is annual memorial program alongside the waters of the Atlantic Ocean at Point Lookout Town Park, 7:30 a.m. on September 11th, 2015. Those attending the ceremony will play an active and integral role in a moving tribute to the heroes who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11th. The ceremony will focus on the legacy of 9/11 victims and the theme of “renewal.” A powerful focal point of the ceremony will be an 18-foot tall, chromium replica of the World Trade Center, rising majestically from the shoreline. The towers will be set against a new 35-foot long “inspiration mural,” depicting Manhattan’s skyline. A tribute fountain will rest at the base of the compelling memorial display. As part of the program, participants are asked to cast white carnations

upon the fountain. Attendees will be given permanent markers and invited to write the names of loved ones who perished in the attacks or of illnesses related to their work at Ground Zero upon the inspiration mural. As the final interactive component, guests will place miniature American ﬂags, which include message tags, at a sand platform in front of the towers. “We are compelled to return to this beach on an annual pilgrimage of personal reﬂection and renewal in communion with the victims who perished on the saddest day in this nation’s history,” stated Murray. “Hundreds of neighbors return to this location each year, the same place where they gathered immediately after the 9/11 attacks, looking toward the site of the once majestic towers.” Additional elements of the ceremony include

Sunrise Ceremony performances by the Kellenberg Gregorian Consortium, dove release, memorial fire bell ringing, fire truck flag arch, bagpipe procession as well as speeches by the Town Supervisor and religious leaders. A keynote speech will be offered by two local residents, Morgan Stanley employees who were fire marshals on the 73rd floor of the south tower. When the second plane hit they stayed to help others off their floor and miraculously made it out of the building before it collapsed. “The legacy of love and hope of the victims of the terrorist attacks serves as a vibrant tribute to their memory and holds the promise of renewal for future generations,” said Supervisor Murray. Supervisor Kate Murray and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad are encouraging all parents and guardians to take advantage of the town’s Child Safety I.D. program, an easy and free service that can be vital in the event of a missing child or other emergency situation. “Keeping kids safe is one of the most important responsibilities that the Town of Hempstead shares with families, school officials and caregivers,” said Murray. “While we certainly hope that an emergency situation never arises, it’s imperative that parents and guardians be prepared with their child’s photo and fingerprint information to share with police and other emergency personnel.” The Child Safety I.D. Program is administered by the Town Clerk’s Office, located on the first ﬂoor of Hempstead Town Hall (1 Washington Street, Hempstead). The town offers FREE fingerprinting and photo services Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The parent/guardian will go home with all of their child’s information, and the town does not retain any photos or fingerprints. “I am proud to partner with Supervisor Murray to provide this important child safety service for local residents,” added Ahmad. The Town Clerk’s Office also provides a Mobile Child Identification Program, in which the town’s dedicated child safety experts can visit schools, civic groups and other local organizations to provide the service. Seaford School District greeted 2,283 K-12 students, September 3rd, who, with backpacks and school supplies in hand, came prepared for a new year of learning. The year began with several new additions to staff, instruction, and technology, thanks to the approval of the 20152016 school budget in May, which also restored the middle school sports program, summer math and reading programs, and reinstated chairpersons for each academic department. New safety upgrades were also installed in and around the district’s buildings and grounds. Instructionally, high school students began the year with more course selections, including AP Psychology, Robotics II, American Sign Language and Science Research and Biotechnology. Previous

offerings, such as AP Environmental Science, Journalism and SAT Strategies were restored, which, together with the new courses, boosts the number of advanced coursework opportunities for students. On the technology side, all school buildings are now fully wireless, allowing students and staff to access their mobile devices from anywhere in the district. $

See What The Experts Have To Offer We always strive to reach our patients’ goals whether it is to run a marathon, or reach for a jar on the top shelf at the local supermarket.

So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal. Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional. Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it

into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the ﬂash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder

why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come ﬂooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 29th anniversary of teaching. A mother of 21 year-old twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

This month, Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School (RSS) completed another year of successful programming, helping Nassau County students to improve themselves in everything from core academics to the arts. Since its inception, the six-week summer program has grown to serve more than 17,000 students through 58 programs in 23 districts across the county. In the past year alone,

enrollment has increased by 25 percent. The largest and perhaps most essential component of RSS is credit recovery, helping students who are struggling with core academics to make up what they were unable to complete during the school year. A key element of this is the intensive two-week Regents course, which prepares students to retake the Regents exam in August and improve their scores.

With recent changes to the Regents designed to better reﬂect the common core curriculum, more students than ever are retaking the exam. This year more than 1,200 students are using RSS to prepare for the Common Core Algebra Regents. “It’s extremely high stakes for these students,” RSS Principal Judith Hynes said of the importance of the program. “They cannot graduate without passing

the Regents exam.” This is why, according to Hynes, they are fortunate to have the RSS staff. “We have a team of 1,000 dedicated professionals providing direct, hands-on support on a daily basis.” In addition to critical academic support, RSS offers a full range of enrichment programs for younger students. There are classes in everything from reading, writing and science to sports, art and music. Adventurous

Improvement & Enrichment students can explore a variety of interests including television production, cooking and gymnastics. “It’s a little like summer camp, but educational,” Principal Hynes said of the enrichment program. There are important lessons involved in the fun, such as bullying prevention and good citizenship.” “Nassau BOCES takes on the administrative burden and lessens

the cost of summer programs, giving many districts the opportunity to offer a program they could not afford to offer on their own,” Ms. Hynes said of RSS as a whole. “We provide students the chance to improve their abilities, to succeed in academics, and to enjoy enrichment opportunities they normally wouldn’t have.”

In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned.
