Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

It is a month of transition, as children head back to school, young adults pack up for college, and the rest of us try to adjust to the lessening light, the chillier temperatures and embrace all that the new season has to offer. The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its first ever Founder’s Day – A Family Appreciation Day by offering guests $6 admission for adults and free admission for children on Saturday, August 26th. The park also gave out free backpacks and bracelets to the first 500 visitors. During the event, guests were treated to free face painting and a story hour with Long Island Game Farm owner Melinda Novak and her mother Diane Novak, who founded the park with her husband Stanley Novak in 1970. “Our Founder’s Day

ECO Fay keeps the mission of the Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) close to his heart, and thoroughly enjoys all the aspects of the mission, from tickets and arrest, to education, and especially outreaches. He is involved in the Youth Conservation Program, Youth Waterfowl Day and other youth oriented hunting and fishing outreaches. ECO Fay maintains one of the most diverse enforcement programs in the Division. He is adept at all aspects of the Environmental

Conservation Law. Additionally, he successfully networks with outside agencies and organizations, and he actively accepts outreach projects for the Division, helping to spread the word for protection of the environment and the State’s natural resources. ECO Fay was recognized for numerous successful marine fish and wildlife investigations involving shellfish, crustacean and food fish. With his diverse workload, he was also responsible for multiple cases concerning the unlawful disposal of solid waste. This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court. ECO Fay is trained and certified in many fields of work with the DEC Division of Law Enforcement. He is a Field training officer and a Firearms instructor, training new and current police officers inside the DEC as well as outside agencies. He is also as a member of the NYS DEC/ DLE Special Operations Group (SOG) completing the DEC Basic Tactical Operator’s Course in 2015 and the SWAT Operator Course in 2016. For the past 11 years, ECO Fay’s professional work ethic and commitment to his profession resulted in him being nominated and receiving the ShikarSafari Club International Officer of the Year award. Tim resides in Northport in Suffolk County with his wife Anne and four daughters, Emily, Lauren, Nora and Valerie.

Stuff-a-Bus Sort-a-thon The Long Island Nets and the United Way of Long Island recently held a Sort-a-Thon event at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in partnership with Target as part of the 2017 annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign. The Sort-A-Thon featured more than 75 volunteers including Senator Elanie Phillips and Senator Kemp Hannon, along with members of their respective staffs,

Target employees, representatives of the Long Island Nets and members of Union 338. Volunteers sorted thousands of school supplies to be donated to the Uniondale School District to benefit students in need for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. The school supplies included backpacks, binders, colored pencils, notebooks, glue sticks and other useful tools that have been collected from more

than 25 drop-off locations throughout Long Island. Over the past eight years, United Way of Long Island’s Stuff-A-Bus program has provided hundreds of thousands of school supplies to Long Island students. 2017 is the first time that Stuff-ABus will be held in Nassau County. Over 50 Fair In mid-September, the Over 50 Fair will once again offer Long Islanders an opportunity to meet with businesses and nonprofits who have terrific products and services geared towards adults age 50+ and their adult children. The Over 50 Fair, in its eighth year, is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 17th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Long Island Hilton/Huntington, its new easier location, will have over 80 exhibitors and over 30 speakers including television reality favorites. Kimberly Sherbach of Wantagh was one of the bachelorettes on the 19th edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series,

“The Bachelor,” in 2015. She will be discussing what it was like to be on the TV show and do a “Q & A.” In addition, Kimberly will be teaching a yoga class. Chef Maria Petridis was crowned a “Chopped Champion” on Food Network’s Chopped in December. Maria, of Maria’s Mediterranean Seafood & Grill in Bayside, will be doing a Greek cooking demo that is sure to be well-attended. Chef Sophie Bravo of Food Network’s Chopped Junior will be doing two demonstrations. Sophie, an adorable 11 year-old, will be doing a meringue class as well as a cake decorating with fondant class. Others include talks on reiki, astrology, hot

flashes, trusts, reinventing yourself, knitting, a country line dancing class, and a dance performance by the Seasoned Steppers, a group of women who are age 66+ and are former Ms. New York Senior America pageant contestants. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates events at area malls under the business name Specialty Connections. “Because Americans are living longer, they should seek to live life to its fullest. There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. The purpose of the Over 50 Fair is to show people where to find them.”

The YMCA of Long Island is excited to announce the launch of a new swim lessons program for members at all Y locations beginning in September. This is the first time in more than 20 years that the YMCA will update the methodology behind its program. Registration for the YMCA of Long Island’s new swim program began August 20th, and the program will officially launch on September 10th and run through November 18th. “The YMCA of the USA and the YMCA of Long Island are entirely dedicated to the safety of our community members, which is why we found it more important than ever to update our swim program to best prepare our members with the ability to be safe around the water and swim confidently,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “The new program will move away from the traditional swim training mechanisms such as floatation devices and instead focus on selfrescue skills and improved swim techniques.” The upgraded program includes three-categories: Swim Starters, Swim Basics and Swim Strokes,

through which swimmers will gain confidence and technical skill as they become highly proficient swimmers. In addition, once swimmers have completed the stages of swim, they can move onto Pathways, which are specialized tracks, including Competition, Leadership and Recreation. “This new program is designed for participants to feel safe and confident around water. It works on preventative activities such as asking permission to go into the water to working on the self-rescue benchmark skills JumpPush-Turn-Grab and SwimFloat-Swim,” said Tracie Busch, Aquatic Director at the Patchogue Family YMCA. “As they progress with the swim basics of the program they will learn and build to competitive swim strokes. This new approach gives a more fluid progression of skills that allows swimmers to feel a sense of achievement as they progress at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.” Swim Starters introduces infants and toddlers, ages six months to

three years, to the aquatic environment and focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water. Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity. Grant Available The Student Activist Grant of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island is available to Nassau County middle school and high school students who want to create a better world. The $500 grant funds a selected student’s project in areas of peace, humanitarian efforts, the environment, disaster relief, or disadvantaged groups. The project can be a fundraiser that connects to an existing organization (such as the Habitat for Humanity) or makes a direct change (such as a neighborhood clean-up or voter registration drive). The grant will give the student seed money to conduct the project. Previous Student

Activist Grants have supported safe recycling of medicine containers for clinics in Malawi, building a greenhouse on a high school campus, spring baskets for children in homeless shelters, educating high school students about underage drinking with stickers on pizza boxes, creating an outdoor play area at a homeless shelter, running a Bowl-a-thon for Habitat for Humanity, and creating and selling ornaments to raise money for a breast cancer program. Says 2015 grant recipient Matthew Berman of Roslyn High School who collected 3500 pill bottles that were sent to Africa, “I am so grateful for this opportunity that

the grant presented me with to turn this plan on paper into a successful and functioning reality.” The student must be a Nassau County resident, aged 12 to 18, and enrolled in middle school or high school. The application deadline is November 30th, 2017, with the project to be completed before April 30th, 2018. Tips for College Applicants schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants. Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements. Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college. Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier. Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those

Waterfront Festival Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced plans to host a Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the Town’s 32nd annual Bluefish Tournament on Sunday, September 10th, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. The free event, sponsored by Trinity Solar and Connoisseur Media of Long Island, features children’s activities, face painting, learning exhibits on solar energy, environmental protection and sea life, New York State’s largest fish shaped cake and live musical entertainment by Captain Jack (Billy Joel Tribute), Beyond Fab (Beatles Tribute), Whiskey Road (country hits) and Randy Jackson of Zebra (acoustic Zeppelin).

Supervisor Saladino stated, “I’m thrilled to bring this free familyfun event to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and invite residents of all ages to come down and enjoy live music, marine and outdoor exhibits, great food, arts and crafts and other family-fun activities.” For the last 10 years, Supervisor Saladino hosted a Marine and Outdoor Recreation Expo as a State Assemblyman. The Expo attracted thousands of visitors and this year, as Supervisor, Joseph Saladino is excited to expand upon earlier efforts by presenting Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the annual Bluefish Tournament. “The Bluefish Tournament is an all-

day event and a mustdo for avid fishermen,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Following the fishing excursion, participants enjoy a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, raffles, awards and prizes, thanks to generous event sponsors.” Registration for the Bluefish Tournament, which is held from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., is currently underway and open to anglers of all ages at $35 for Town residents and $45 for non-residents. Registration is limited to the first 350 boats and early registration is advised. Community Collections New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, new Councilman Lou Imbroto, and Mayor of Massapequa Park Jeff Pravato announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will partner with Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, Island Harvest, to collect food and supplies to support the ongoing relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. “Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane the strongest storm to hit our country in 10 years,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Tragically, thousands of people are now seeking food and temporary shelter, as Hurricane Harvey has continued to deliver unprecedented amounts of rain in the impacted area. This is our opportunity to help give back to the many people and agencies who came to our aid following Superstorm Sandy. I urge everyone to donate what they can, as this is our chance to help our fellow
