Making Strides Against Cancer The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks will occur on Sunday, October 21st, 2018 at Jones Beach and Sunday, October 28th, 2018 at Suffolk County Community CollegeEastern Campus, uniting communities, honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds

for a world without breast cancer. The event at Jones Beach is the most attended event in the United States with over 65,000 volunteer participants, helping to raise nearly $3 million dollars. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation.

The noncompetitive, inspirational event raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer

comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. In 2017, ACS staff helped guide more than 40,000 cancer patients through every step of their journey as they moved through the health care system, including helping with insurance problems, referring them to ACS and other local services, assisting caregivers and

addressing obstacles to care. “Because of the determination of Making Strides supporters, the American Cancer Society is there for people in every community affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may face one in the future, or will avoid it altogether

Long Island Educational Leaders Gather to Celebrate SCOPE Long Island’s public school educational leaders congregated at Oakdale’s Bourne Mansion on August 9th for SCOPE Education Service’s 34th annual Dinner Meeting for superintendents and school board members. The event served as a networking opportunity for new and returning superintendents and board of education trustees and other education system professionals. SCOPE provides a vast

array of school district services, such as before and after-school child care programs, school enrichment programs and professional development. SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy told those in attendance that their work is vital and urged them to utilize and benefit from the many programs and services SCOPE provides. He also introduced all newly installed school board members and

superintendents and wished them success in their new positions. Henry Grishman, president of SCOPE’s board of directors, gave valuable advice to the organization’s new guests. He said, “Leave your school district in far better shape than you found it.” Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of

Education MaryEllen Elia. Both provided updates on education policy changes, such as state assessments, graduation requirements and teacher evaluations. Regent Tilles said he is examining ways to create opportunities for teacher advancement and noted that while many Long Island districts are receiving national accolades, other districts are struggling. “We have to remember that those kids are our kids,” Regent Tilles

said. “We cannot separate districts doing well from those that aren’t. The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration will award a total of $10,000 in scholarships to Girl Scouts from throughout Nassau County who are selected as winners in the museum’s Heritage Essay program. Awardees will be announced at the museum on Veterans Day, 2018. The announcement will be made during ceremonies at the armor museum, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, on Sunday, September 2nd, at 11:30 a.m. Girl Scouts will be challenged to write essays about the veterans in their own families, or those they have met, as part of the museum’s ongoing educational efforts designed to create a better appreciation of the sacrifices asked of those who have served our nation. The program will award the first prize winner a $5,000 scholarship, the second place essay a $3,000 award, and the third place essayist will receive $2,000. Honorable mentions will receive $250. Museum president and founder, Lawrence Kadish, stated, “This program began in 2016 and the response was overwhelming. As we approach the 75th anniversary of D-Day it

Some people they help through these workshops are those in women’s shelters, homeless shelters, veteran homes, at-risk communities, drug rehabilitation centers, senior centers and more.

Acknowledgements I have been putting this off for quite some time. This “final step,” if you will, penning my last column for South Bay. I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter. And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain. While my last three columns have been vignettes of one sort or another – from birthday beginnings and numeric significance, to desktop mementos and the memories associated with them, to a ﬂashback of my origins within the pages of the old Lindy hometown weekly – this one, well, this one leaves me at a bit of a loss for words. My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Always, though, the idea was to find a common thread, a unifying theme. Change. It is the one constant. A perfect theme for this transitional transcript, don’t you think? Over the last several weeks, I have received countless letters from fans, family, friends – even a few detractors – most of whom were avid followers of my writing, all of whom wanted to take the opportunity to wish me well on the next phase of my journey. There were even a few phone calls from those

wishing to speak to me, to tell me how much of an impact I had made on their lives, how deeply a particular column had resonated.

Seaford High School Class of 2022 Gets Red Carpet Treatment Seaford High School’s Class of 2022 received a warm welcome from administrators, teachers, guidance counselors and fellow students during freshmen orientation on August 23rd. The 184 incoming students met their buddies for the first time, as 75 juniors and seniors are serving as mentors. The upperclassmen led tours of the building, helping incoming ninth graders

locate their classes and lockers. “We’re trying to help them have an easy transition from middle school to high school,” said Freshmen Buddies Secretary, Adrianna DelPozzo. Mentors helped ninthgraders get acclimated to the school by answering questions about academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, support services and more. They also shared

tips on effective time management and taking advantage of the high school’s many offerings. Parents of incoming freshman had a question and answer session with Principal Bersin, and with Assistant Principals Jennifer Bisulca and Nicole Schnabel. The program also included details of the new personal learning initiative, in which students will be provided with their own laptops.

Seaford High School senior Lauren King moved one step closer to achieving her dream of becoming a scientist by participating in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s High School Research Program this summer. Lauren took part in the rigorous and highlycompetitive six-week internship for students interested in pursuing STEM careers — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. She spent five days a week, eight and a half hours a day, working with

top scientists in the region, studying nuclear science and technology. Specifically, her research focused on high-precision gamma ray spectroscopy of arsenic in which she analyzed data from an experiment performed at a different laboratory to find potential medical uses for the chemical element in PET imaging. Her internship concluded with a presentation on her findings. “It was a real experience and I definitely learned a lot,” said Lauren, who hopes to study nuclear

engineering in the future. “The best part was building a relationship with my mentor.” Lauren learned about the internship last summer when she attended Summer Sundays at Brookhaven, a series of programs that allows visitors to tour the facilities, attend presentations and speak with scientists. At Seaford High School, she has taken several Advanced Placement (AP) science courses and is a member of the robotics team.

READING PROGRAM HELD - Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney (seated) joins with reading enthusiasts as part of her summer reading program. New teachers in the Seaford School District had an experience that will help them relate to their students — they rode the yellow school bus. As part of their introduction to the district, the teachers received a tour of Seaford on August 27th, led by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel, John Striffolino. He showed them the schools, parks, library and other notable locations. The group also visited the

Seaford Historical Society and asked trivia questions about the community. The district welcomes 22 new faculty members this year who will teach a variety of subjects and grade levels at the four schools. While some of the new teachers have held different positions, 16 are brand new to the district. Orientation included a review of safety and security procedures, district policies, support services for students and parentteacher communication

The United Teachers of Seaford provided lunch and an informational session. “We want our new teachers to get acclimated quickly and have a smooth beginning to the school year,” Mr. Striffolino said. “This is a great group with a lot of energy.
