he Seaford Public Library had another very successful summer with both its Children’s and Young Adult Summer Reading Clubs. The Children’s “Dig Into Reading” Summer Reading Program had a membership of over 900 participants and 180 volunteers. Besides the many terrific books read, enjoyed and reported by the children, there were many exciting programs. A great time was had by all who participated.

More than three thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 22nd, to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said Mark S. Davis, Managing Partner of Deloitte’s Long Island location and Chairman of the Long Island Heart Walk. “As someone who lost his dad at a young age to heart disease, I am proud to help raise awareness and raise funds that will contribute to the goal of improving

the cardiovascular health of the Long Island community. The American Heart Association is proud to have Elizabeth Hashagen, News12 Morning Show coanchor as this years’ event emcee. Heart Walk participants will experience three “communities” that feature relevant resources and activities. Dose Of Nostalgia I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,

newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts

today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

The second annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) Cruisin’ For Kids’ Sake Motorcycle Run will take place at 10 a.m., on Saturday September 21st, with a rain date scheduled for Sunday, September 22nd. The seventy-mile ride will begin at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island office located at 70 Acorn Lane in Levittown and reach Bear Mountain State Park in Tomkins Cove, New York, next to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Summer Concerts A Success The Seaford Public Library is very proud to announce it had another tremendously successful summer with its series of very popular outdoor concerts, Music For A Saturday Evening. In partnership with the Seaford Chamber of Commerce, the Friends of the Library, the Seaford Lions Club, and the Seaford Wellness Council,

the summer series kicked off with a Billy Joel tribute band, Captain Jack, followed by the Queen of Country Mary Lamont, an Americana band named Runaway Train from Delaware next, and ended with a bang with Turnpike Joe and the Trafﬁc Jam, Long Island’s premier classic rock band. Hundreds of people

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
