Technology is an important part of many people’s daily lives. Devices like computers, tablets, smartphones, and video games are now so widely used that it’s hard to imagine a life without email, the Internet or text messages. Even children are proving adept at using technology, which can be a valuable tool for educators attempting to reach today’s youngsters. Digital learning is learning facilitated by technology. Not only can digital learning be done in the classroom, but also it can extend to home life as children continue to explore lessons through hands-on interaction with digital devices. According to data from Project Tomorrow’s “Speak Up” study, an initiative of the nation’s leading education nonprofit organization, students are frustrated with the lack of technology
in their schools and by the lack of sophisticated use of that technology. The study indicates that students want more of the following: • Social-based learning • Tools that increase untethered learning • Development of and connection to a personal network of expert resources • A digitally rich learning environment Students acclimated to technology at home are not content to merely rely on textbooks or CDs in the classroom. They’re more interested in interactive, Web-based tools that enhance communication and collaboration. As a result of this shifting landscape, parents should expect to see more lessons and homework involving interactive technology. To make this transition go more smoothly, teachers and parents can work
together to ensure kids are making the most of the exciting developments in education. The following are just a handful of the changes that figure to come about as a result of the transition to digital learning: • Lesson plans, assignments and tutoring opportunities available online for continued reference. • Learning-centered chat rooms for peerto-peer interaction and sharing of materials. • Digital content in the way of high quality academic materials
available through interactive apps and not stagnant PDFs or text materials. Software may range from video lectures to learning games. • Increased availability of teachers and professors. Summer Reading Clubs
The Seaford Public Library is very pleased to announce the success of the Summer Reading Clubs for children and young adults this past summer. The theme of the Children Summer Reading Club was “Fizz, Boom, Read!” and the Young Adult Summer Reading Club theme was “Spark a Reaction.” Starting with a visit from Elephant and Piggie and ending with an amazing show from Jester Jim the Children’s Summer Reading Club was a huge success! A wide variety of programs were offered every day. A total of 816 children were enrolled and 5,281 books were read. Volunteers numbered 186
– an invaluable asset to a very busy department. Music, Science, Art, Live Animals, and Clowns all added up to a rollicking good time in the Children’s Room. Thanks to all who participated and helped to make it a great summer. This year, the Young Adult department had the highest number of participants in our Summer Reading Club program yet! 75 teens signed up and over 200 reading records were submitted. They kicked off the summer with a Pizza Taste Off Challenge and teens voted “Brooklyn Square Pizza” as the best pizza in Seaford! They continued the summer with
interactive, educational, and heart pumping fun programs. Some program highlights included a robotics program where teens constructed a solar powered robot from scratch! Their DNA Fingerprinting workshop was a huge success as teens experimented with sample DNA. Wii Game Night, Neon Glow Zumba & Draw Your Own Comic were also worthy of mentioning. They ended the summer with a BANG by raffling off an Ipad Mini to one lucky winner who participated in the Summer Reading program. Congratulations to mini-winner Amelia Silberger!
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town will host its Seventh Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 21st, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. “Today, one in 88 individuals will be diagnosed with autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have become
available since the disorder became more visible in the mainstream press, but doctors have yet to make any true conclusions on how to reverse the diagnosis.” Now in its seventh year, the Town’s walk has helped spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “The center focusses on building awareness to the issue of autism while offering families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research,” Supervisor
Venditto said. Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt and admission to the tailgate party. SAND SCULPTING CHAMPS - Supervisor Kate Murray and the MaliBlue Oyster Bar welcomed residents of all ages to the second annual Seaside Sand-Sculpting Spectacular Competition at Town Park at Malibu. Residents were awarded great prizes – including gift certificates to MaliBlue Oyster Bar – in three divisions: 10 and Under, 11-15, and Adults. Members of Malibu Beach Camp and some of America’s renowned sand sculptors were on hand to showcase their skills. The winners of the adult category were Joe and Dianne Sloboda of Seaford. They are pictured with Supervisor Murray and MaliBlue owner Butch Yamali.

Walk For Autism
The Seaford Public Library had another tremendously successful summer with its series of four; very popular, outdoor concerts entitled “Music for a Saturday Evening.” The Library’s longterm relationship with a number of community groups resulted in their co-sponsorship again this summer. Those groups are the Seaford Chamber of Commerce, the Friends of the Seaford Public Library, the Seaford Lions Club and the Seaford Wellness Council. For the first time, the series had a corporate sponsor, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Library
Board President Peter Ruffner stated, “We appreciate the enthusiastic financial support of each of these sponsoring entities. The community and business support for this summer program shows the true spirit of Seaford.” The summer series kicked off with the sounds of Motown with the “Sugar and Spice Soul Band,” followed by the “totally radical” 80’s music of “White Wedding Band.” The third concert was performed by “Jukebox Explosion” featuring tunes from the 60’s and, finally, the high energy, funk, rock and R&B group “Uppercut” finished the series. Library
Trustee Eileen Montalbano specifically thanked librarian Eric Wasserman for his dedication over the years in coordinating the arrangements for these concerts and for his outstanding Master of Ceremony duties. This summer’s program was met with record attendance. Newly elected Trustee James DiPietro commented, “It is so nice to see the good folks of Seaford continuing to enjoy themselves at a program the Library has been putting on each summer for over a decade.” The planning for next summer’s program has already begun!
with following a few rules set forth by the school. Students may overlook the importance of organized lockers, and in such instances lockers can easily become disaster areas. But a messy locker can add unnecessary stress to a school day. Getting lockers organized requires some effort and upkeep. • Color code the locker. Grouping subjects by color can make it easier to find notebooks, textbooks and folders in a locker. If materials necessary for math class are colored in red, students can quickly find these materials en route to class. • Remove trash. Remove anything that does not belong in the locker, including garbage and old projects. Students should not use their lockers to store items they don’t need for school. That only takes away space for the stuff kids do need for class. • Group according to schedule. In addition to employing a color-coding
system, students also can group books by daily schedule. Organize the locker based on which classes are held in the morning and afternoon. This makes it less likely that students will forget supplies they need for class. • Think about extra accessories. Lockers have the basics, which are usually a shelf and a hook for coats. All sorts of locker accessories exist to customize the interior. An extra shelf may be helpful for storing books or smaller supplies. Look into a message board or more hooks that can be hung on the inside of the door. Figure out what your child can use to keep items from piling up on the floor. • Develop a maintenance plan. Old assignments may begin to accumulate inside a locker. This can be remedied by maintaining a cleaning schedule for a locker. A few minutes each week can keep a locker clean and clear of clutter.
Make School Lunch Healthier menus were altered to be healthier than ever, including more fruits and vegetables while limiting calories. Despite some controversy through the years, including some students saying the smaller portions and food choices aren’t always satisfying, states suffering from high child obesity rates have seen marked improvements. Canada is one of the few leading industrialized countries that does not have a national nutrition strategy to implement healthy school lunches. It’s estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of Canadian children have access to school meals. These meals are not provided by a wellfunded national program, but by a patchwork of individual volunteer efforts, some provincial government funding and corporate donations. Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow.
• Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer. • Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association recommends kids get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources. • Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating. Giving kids a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will keep energy levels up during school and make kids less likely to
reach for unhealthy snacks to fill hunger gaps. • Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads, and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products can make a world of difference. Kids may not notice a change in texture or flavor, and many of kids’ favorite foods, such as chicken nuggets, pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with healthier ingredients. • Remember, beverages count, too. Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, high-calorie drink negates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. Water is always the best option for a healthy drink. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed in moderation also make healthy alternatives to sugary beverages. Offering healthy school lunches is an important step to raising healthy kids. New guidelines and offerings make it easier for kids to get the nutrition they need for their growing bodies.

Students learn many important lessons while in middle school and high school. Assignments get progressively more difficult, and students grow accustomed to being independent thinkers and largely responsible for their educational accomplishments. In addition, students may learn other lessons, such as how organization can play a critical role in success and benefit them both in the classroom and out of it. Students are typically introduced to lockers during high school or middle school. As elementary school students, kids use classroom desks to store books and supplies, and how desks are organized is often governed by teachers who have firm rules regarding the condition of desks. Lockers are an entirely different story. Students are solely responsible for organizing and maintaining their lockers and may be tasked

tips for parents to help their child find the right homework routine: Some children need an after-school break. Many parents assume the best approach to homework - especially for younger children who may not have many after-school extracurricular activities to dive in the moment they get home from school. However, this may not work for every child. Some children do much better when they decompress for 30 minutes before getting started on homework. Other children do their best work while still in “school mode.” On the other hand, some students find that a break before dinner time only distracts them. On days that your child does not have sports practice or activities after school, he
or she may prefer to get homework completed right away. Children who tend to procrastinate need help with prioritization. While your goal should be to help your child become an independent studier, you can help him or her learn how to develop a daily homework todo list that minimizes downtime. If your child tends to spin his or her wheels when it comes to homework, spend five minutes together before he or she gets started to develop a game plan and estimated amount of time for each item on the to-do list. Short study sessions are better than homework marathons. Much has been documented about the benefit of frequent, abbreviated study sessions. Not only do
shorter study periods encourage students to repeatedly review concepts, it is far easier for students to stay focused for brief periods of time. It is ok if your child only has 15 minutes after school to get some homework in and needs to resume later on, that’s okay. Breaking up the study sessions may actually be a good thing for his or her retention. Try alternating. Encourage your child to break down larger, more complex assignments rather than try to knock them out in one sitting. If your child is writing a paper, for example, have him or her write a few pages, then turn his or her attention to another subject. Small goals and incentives can be helpful. No matter the age of your child, it’s always helpful
to have goals to work toward. Once your child finishes one subject, he or she should reward him or herself with a five-minute break to text back a friend or step outside for some fresh air. When your child completes all of his or her homework, allow some free time to do whatever he or she wants television or computer time, for example. When you approach the homework routine, keep in mind that consistency is the key. Once your child embraces homework and studying as a daily habit, he or she will become more proficient at managing his or her time effectively, in school and in life. Jazz Up In The Sky Live Jazz will be heard throughout the evening on Friday, September 12th, as a group of legendary musicians bring their love and concern for the elderly to new heights on the rooftop of Flushing House in Queens! “Jazz Up In The Sky” takes place up on the roof at Flushing House, New York State’s largest, notfor-profit, “Independent Living” retirement community, located in Flushing, Queens. This live jazz extravaganza is a special fundraising dinner/ dance/concert, to benefit the 300 older adults who call Flushing House home. Headlining the evening’s performers is worldfamous and Grammy award winning jazz hero Hernan Romero. The Hernan Romero Group has featured some of the world’s great guitarists, including Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin. This group infuses the exotic traditions of flamencogypsy, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean folk music, with sounds of classical, jazz and Latin rhythms.
Composer and guitarist Hernan Romero’s music is famous for its sensuous, passionate, romantic and inescapably infectious sounds. College To Show Support Jones Beach, Field Five, is again the official Nassau County location for this year’s American Heart/Stroke Walk. Three thousand volunteers and participants are expected to take part in the Walk, which will take place on Sunday, September 21st, with registration from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and the walk starting at 10 a.m. “Nassau Community College is pleased to again support the American Heart/Stroke Walk for the thirteenth year,” said Dr. Kenneth Saunders, Acting President of NCC. “The
partnership established over the years between the College and the American Heart Association has created opportunities for thousands of walkers to raise much needed funding for heart and stroke research.” Last year NCC collected close to $6,000 in donations. The American Heart/ Stroke Walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association, is a three-mile walk event established to raise funds in the fight against heart disease and stroke on Long Island. It also promotes
cardiovascular health and regular exercise. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of men and women - more than all cancers combined.
