Growing up in Brentwood, Leslie Peralta saw that her community had many health and wellness needs. This thought, combined with her interest in science pushed her to study health sciences. She attended Johns Hopkins University and majored in biology, then followed that with a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers University and a stint teaching science to high schoolers in New Jersey. Her goals grew and she pursued medical school. Now Leslie is among the 136 students at Stony Brook University School of Medicine making up the 2018 incoming class. The students, their families and Stony Brook faculty celebrated and officially launched the students’ medical school journey at Stony Brook University’s traditional White Coat Ceremony. The 21s t annual event was held on August 12 at the Student Activities Center. Leslie and all of her classmates are on a transformative journey. In a profession built on saving lives, the journey begins with rigorous training about the human body, training in clinical skills and understanding how to think and communicate like a physician, and learning how to implement new technologies into patient care. “Your futures will be filled with many firsts – your first patient, your first diagnosis, your first clinical success, your first patient death,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. “Medicine is a challenging, rewarding profession that will transform your life and the lives of your patients. Your white coat

is a symbol of professionalism, scientific excellence and compassionate care. Wear it well while at Stony Brook and in your future lives as physicians.” The class is a diverse and talented group with many interests in medicine. Sixty percent are residents of New York State and 40 percent hail from 16 other states or from around the world. They represent 70 undergraduate schools, have a collective grade point average of 3.80 and an average national MCAT score in the 90th percentile. Only 9 percent of the total 2018 applicants were accepted

into Stony Brook. Among some of the other students are: Alex Baez, a native of Colorado who came to Stony Brook as an undergraduate and was inspired to choose medicine as he took part in the Stony Brook ambulance volunteer corps on campus. He has an interest in the neurosciences and patient care. Alex is among the students enrolled in Stony Brook’s MD/PhD program. Lara Ambrosi, who has been an international citizen as her father works for the United Nations, hopes to become an oncologist

Inspired by his mother, a physician, Simon is considering psychiatry but also has interest in the expanding arena of global health. Leslie Peralta is not sure what specialty she will choose, thought she favors OB/GYN. She is thrilled to be back in her home zone and has a goal after graduation to be a physician focusing on the many health and preventive medicine needs of her Brentwood community, or a similar community somewhere in the country. Jack Fuhrer, MD, Associate Dean for Admissions, and Latha Chandran, MD, MPH, Vice Dean, Academic and Faculty Affairs, jointly announced and presented each student with a physician-intraining white coat. Dean Kaushansky administered the Hippocratic Oath, which the students recited for the first time – another symbolic entry into medicine. Ramon Parsons, MD/PhD, Class of 1992, was presented with the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award and honored for his distinguished career as a cancer researcher. He is the Director of the Tisch Cancer Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Lauren Ferrante, MD, Class of 2007 was presented with the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award. Dr. Ferrante, Assistant Professor of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, is a recognized leader in clinical outcomes research at the interface of critical care medicine and geriatrics.

gen e sis: the origin or mode of formation of something; evolution, inception •

It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task

of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.

At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

On August 8th, the Special Olympics New York Leadership Council hosted its 12th annual Summer Social at the Marquee New York. Nearly 550 New Yorkers came together to support and celebrate unity and inclusion. All proceeds, including ticket sales and silent auction funds, are being donated to the athletes of Special Olympics New York. The event raised over $125,000 to support of the Special Olympics New York mission which allows athletes to showcase their talents and

abilities, while improving self-esteem, developing social interactions and enhancing leadership skills on and off the playing field. A special tribute was made to John Cronin, John’s Crazy Socks’ Founder and Special Olympics New York athlete. Special Olympics New York expressed its gratitude to the many generous supporters and the very talented Leadership Council who hosted the event, as well as contributed their time, talent and treasure to serve and bring this event to the

New York City community. Seaford High School students, former students and parents came together to spread some positive energy during the upcoming school year. A group of volunteers painted inspirational messages in a set of bathrooms at the school on August 14th. The high school followed Seaford Middle School and Seaford Manor Elementary School in receiving the paintings through Project #ChooseKind. The

messages were painted in a boys room and girls room on the first floor. “We’re giving the students inspirational messages and bringing some positivity to the school,” said project coordinator Donna Jebaily. “There will always be a little message to boost them up.” Volunteers included students Kim Draws, Jessica Kofod, Marissa Mele and Max Newman, former

Guardians Raising Funds to Guardians of Rescue to help relocate it back to America, where he will make the dog, he named Hilal, a part of his fur-ever family. “He has a heart of gold, has saved this dog, and can’t bear to leave it behind in a place where it will likely lead to its death,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “Hilal deserves better than that, and so does this soldier who has served his country

and is only asking in return that we help get his dog back to the states for him.” Army Specialist Joseph Gomez found Hilal as a puppy and saved her from the despair that so many dogs in that part of the Middle East succumb to. While for security purposes he cannot share the details of how he rescued her, he can share the condition he was in. He was extremely dehydrated, starving, and in need of medical care. He rescued him, led him to good health, and

has created a solid bond with him. Knowing that he would return to the U.S., he reached out to Guardians of Rescue to see if they could help with the risky mission of helping him relocate the dog back to America. “I saved Hilal once and now I’m hoping that through the Guardians of Rescue people can help me save him a second time,” added Gomez. “I can’t live with the idea of leaving him behind, because I know what will happen to him, and we have a strong bond. I need to take him back to Oklahoma with me.” Guardians of Rescue are experience at helping soldiers bring their dogs back to the country. They have a team of experts who work at every step of the mission to ensure the dog makes it safely back to the country. Hilal will first be flown into New York, and then will be taken on to Gomez’ home state of Oklahoma, where the

two will be reunited for good. It’s a mission that is not only risky, but is also costly, which is why the rescue group is teaming up with those in the public who support the mission and can help make it a reality. “When we pull off a mission like this we cannot do it alone,” adds Misseri. “This is a mission that takes the support of people in the community who want to give back and help this soldier and his dog. Even small donations help, because they all add up quickly.” This is a time-sensitive mission, so the rescue group will need to act quickly. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the annual Dockside Family Festival will take place on Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th at Captree State Park in Babylon from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This festival offers fun for the entire family! Adults can enjoy live music as well as a variety of merchandise

and food vendors. Activities for children include our famous crab races, boat rides (children must be accompanied by an adult), interactive pirate shows, pony rides, magic shows, and much more! All activities are free; however, there is an $8.00 vehicle use fee in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Natural Heritage Trust and the Long

Island State Park Region. Corporate contributors include Connoisseur Media Long Island, Tike Joe’s at Captree, US4 Sport Fishing, Inc. Crazy Sock Competition Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and John Cronin, the co-founder of John’s Crazy Socks delivered special 50th anniversary commemorative socks at Camp ANCHOR today. D’Esposito recently ran a sock competition, where all camp participants designed socks to celebrate the anniversary of the camp, with John selecting a winner that was then sent to production. “The enthusiasm that we received for this competition was unparallelled,” said Councilman D’Esposito. “Our ANCHOR participants really got into the spirit and created some amazing sock designs. I am very happy that I was not the person who had to choose the big winner!” ANCHOR is the Town’s comprehensive year-round program serving 1,200 children and adults with special needs. Camp ANCHOR, the town’s six-week summer day camp program, serves approximately 700 children and adults with special needs throughout the summer. Camp participants who are ages five years and up enjoy an array of athletic, aquatic and cultural programs, as well as field trips and special events. John’s Crazy Socks is operated by John, a young man with Down Syndrome and his father Mark. The company is built on the mission of showing what is possible when you give someone a chance and demonstrate what people with intellectual disabilities can do. “It is clear to see, from the socks that were designed, how

much the campers love ANCHOR and how enthusiastic they were about celebrating its 50th Anniversary,” said Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby. Proceeds from the sale of the 50th Anniversary commemorative sock will go to the ANCHOR Program Fund. ANCHOR Program Fund, Inc., is a charitable, notfor-profit organization that accepts donations to fund

special activities and events, as well as the necessary supplies and equipment, for individuals with disabilities participating in programs like ANCHOR. So far, more than $9,000 has been raised through the pre- sale of the 50th anniversary socks and sales will continue at www. johnscrazysocks.com. “Camp ANCHOR is such a special place and the

Program Fund allows the campers to enjoy even more enriching activities,” said Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney. “I can only imagine the wonderful things they are going to be able to do with the funds raised through this competition!” John’s Crazy Socks donated the production costs of all the socks pre-sold so the ANCHOR Program Fund will be able to utilize all the proceeds from the nearly 600 socks that were delivered by the officials and John. “I would like to commend Councilman D’Esposito for this incredibly creative way to raise funds for the ANCHOR Program Fund. The campers had fun creating their designs and they are the ones who will ultimately benefit from the sale of the socks,” said Councilman Edward Ambrosino. “For 50 years ANCHOR has been serving the special needs population in the Town of Hempstead and this program which brings together our camp and a successful company run by a young man with special needs is a winning collaboration,” said Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin. “All the designs that were submitted were so great,” concluded D’Esposito. “Every camper who worked on one of these designs is a winner in my book and should feel an enormous amount of pride in their accomplishment!”
