The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition To Host Its Annual Together In Teal® No Boundaries National Broadcast Celebration

The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), will be hosting its 2020 Together in TEAL - No Boundaries, National Broadcast Celebration on Saturday, September 26, at 7 PM ET/ 6 PM CT and 4 PM PT. NOCC is launching a new nationwide campaign and event that will enable our community to unite from coast-to-coast with no limits. While our traditional Together in TEAL Run/Walk events cannot take place in the interest of safety and public health, our community needs to be united. The organization’s

signature event, hosted in communities across the United States each year, raises the critical funds necessary to support Earlier Awareness, Quality of Life for Survivors, Research, and Community Outreach. On September 26, we will unite people across the nation touched by ovarian cancer for our Together in TEAL - No Boundaries National Broadcast Celebration. This event will highlight the most inspiring and remarkable stories being told every day in our communities. Ovarian cancer has no boundaries, so

our movement to eradicate it shouldn’t have them either. The global pandemic which limits us from gathering has empowered us. Now is a time for unity. PSEG Long Island to Reimburse Customers for Food and Medicines most destructive storm since Superstorm Sandy. “We recognize that losing power in August, together with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was a hardship for many of our customers,” PSEG Long Island President and COO Daniel Eichhorn said. “Given the unique combination of circumstances, we believe the right thing to do is to expand our claims process

to ease the burden on the customers most impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias.” PSEG Long Island will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4, and Aug. 12, 2020 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. For residential customers,

food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items). Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications

5 Smart Ways to Prep for Back-to-School Without the Stress (StatePoint) Whether the new school year means your kids will be heading back to the classroom, learning remotely, or a mix of both, back-to-school will most likely be stressful. Thinking ahead can help prepare everyone for a new way of learning, and simplify the transition from the slow ease of summertime to the bustle of the school year. Follow these tips so that everyone is ready when the first bell rings. 1. Resume the Routine. Summertime schedules are often lax, but a more structured routine is important during the school year. At least a week before classes start, reestablish set bedtimes and mealtimes to ease everyone back into school year habits. Even if children are remote-learning this fall, keep first day of school traditions alive with their favorite breakfast, pictures and a first day of school outfit. 2. Simplify Shopping. Let kids take pride in this space so they want to spend time studying there by having them create their own accessories and decorating them to their liking. How To Support Scholastic Athletes The 2020-21 school year promises to be one unlike any other today’s students, and even their parents and grandparents, have ever known. In March 2020, many schools were forced to abruptly cancel in-person instruction as government officials tried to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. As the 201920 school year wound down and summer approached, school officials remained uncertain if they would reopen for in-person instruction in the fall, leaving student-athletes to wonder what would happen to fall sports seasons. The cancellation of in-person school sessions and extracurricular activities was hard on every student, and athletes have proven no exception. Many graduating seniors did not get a chance to compete alongside their teammates during spring sports season, bringing their scholastic athletic careers to an abrupt end. With the upcoming 2020-21 scholastic sports season in similar limbo, student-athletes in the class of 2021 might be worried that their own chances to compete are in jeopardy as well. In light of that, local communities can take steps to support scholastic athletes during an uncertain time. • Make a show of your support. Stayat-home measures prevented many schools from hosting traditional graduation ceremonies for graduating seniors. However, many communities found ways to honor their grads, and they can do the same for scholastic

athletes who are unsure about what the future holds. Purchase signs and/or T-shirts from school-based support organizations, erecting the signs in your yard so local athletes know they’re still supported, even if they can’t play. • Create highlight videos. Smartphones have made it possible to record nearly every one of life’s special moments and milestones, so chances are coaches, parents and neighbors have footage of local athletes competing in their sports. Parents, coaches and other fans can work together to create highlight videos for local scholastic sports teams, sharing the finished products via social media. These videos can make for great and lasting memories for student-athletes and even lift their spirits at a time when everyone can use a boost. • Host pep rallies. Organize a pep rally to honor and show support for local athletes. Work with school officials to ensure everyone celebrates safely. Such events are integral to studentathletes’ experience during typical sports seasons, so they can be a great way for communities to offer some semblance of normalcy to athletes who have worked hard to make the team. Student-athletes face uncertainty in regard to the 2020-21 scholastic sports season, but there are many ways for local communities to support their student-athletes, even if the games are postponed or canceled.

This August I have been “taking a look back” at articles I have published in the past, giving various charities another chance at exposure. During these tough times, it is very important we continue to help others and support local charities where we can. Enjoy this past article about a wonderful nonprofit, The Book Fairies.

Getting kids to and from school can be a challenge for working parents. School start times do not always coordinate with parents’ work schedules, and school typically lets out before parents’ workdays end. Carpools are one way parents confront the challenge posed by juggling work and family. With a new school year approaching, parents can take the following factors into consideration as they work to establish carpools. • Determine your insurance needs. Before planning carpools, parents who plan to participate should contact their auto insurance providers to make sure their policies cover driving others. The organizer of the carpool should make sure every parent does this prior to

the school year. Some parents may need to purchase supplemental insurance, and each parent should be willing to provide proof of their insurance as well. • Reach out to parents in your neighborhood. A carpool that is neighborhood-based as opposed to one that is based more on students’ social circles will likely prove more convenient for parents. A carpool with neighbors means parents won’t have to drive far to pick up and/or drop off other students, saving everyone valuable time each day. • Don’t go overboard. Even if your minivan or SUV can seat half a dozen children, you may want to limit the carpool to a more manageable number of youngsters. Getting kids up and out the door each morning is a challenge when there’s just one youngster

By limiting a carpool to between two and four children, parents won’t have to worry about too many hiccups during their morning routines. • Discuss early closures and other unique days in advance. School schedules tend to be the same throughout the year, but there are various times when early closures can affect carpools. This is especially true for parents with children who attend different schools. When planning a carpool, discuss early closure dates with other parents and develop a plan for how to manage pickup. School carpools are convenient for working parents. Planning prior to the school year is a great way to ensure carpools are successful.

Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have

Many universities including Stony Brook University are moving forward with new instruction models as well as new safety precautions to help keep students and staff safe from the novel coronavirus. Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, has a few practical tips that may make the transition easier. Staying healthy is key. If you are feeling sick, get evaluated. What To Know As An Adult Heading Back To School

Fuel Consumption In 2012, the U.S. Department of the Treasury studied the effect that getting stuck in traffic has on fuel consumption. Researchers discovered that Americans were wasting 1.9 billion gallons of gas each year due to congested roads and inadequate

transportation infrastructure. Although that study was conducted in 2012, it’s reasonable to conclude that wasted fuel remains a big and potentially dangerous issue. One way to cut down on the environmental and financial toll of traffic is to find different routes that

help drivers avoid traffic jams. Even if such routes are more circuitous, they may end up helping commuters save time and money in the long run. Popular GPS-based traffic apps can guide drivers to less congested roadways by allowing users to set filters to avoid traffic.

College campuses are diverse. Newly minted high school graduates embarking on the next stage of their studies might dominate college campuses, but many established professionals who have long since graduated from high school are also among the student bodies at universities across the globe. The National Center for Education Statistics says that one in five Americans enrolled in undergraduate higher education is at least 30 years old. The changing face of higher education should be a comfort to adults who may have been apprehensive about heading back to school. Adults considering a return to school should not allow age to deter them from enrolling. Many people now complete degrees later in life, while others return to school to study subjects they did not study during their first go-rounds as college students. Finding the right fit in regard to a college

is different for adults than it is students right out of high school. Responsibilities to family and employers complicate the decision about where to go to school. The following tips can help adults as they decide where to continue their educations. • Choose a school that meets your needs. Look for schools that can accommodate priorities other than academics, such as family and work. Many schools now offer ﬂexible schedules and online classes. Check out schools with strong reputations for working with adult learners. • Sit down with a college counselor. If you’ve been in college before, pull your transcripts and bring any information about coursework, credits and life experience. This way you can be credited for what you have already accomplished. Counselors can serve as invaluable resources as you navigate a return to the classroom. • Brush up on the skills required of successful students. If you’ve been out of school for awhile,

brush up on your study skills, note-taking, annotating, and other skills that can serve you well in an academic environment. • Speak with your employer. Many employers support employees who want to return to school, especially when employees will be gaining skills that are applicable to their existing careers. Some employees may even help their employers finance their educations. According to Matthew Reed, the vice president for learning at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., roughly 90 percent of midsize or large employers offer some kind of tuition reimbursement. Even when that’s not available, some employers may have an arrangement with certain schools that provide discounts to their workers, says Reed. Adults returning to school is becoming increasingly common. Planning and making use of resources at your disposal can help you navigate the process of returning to school as an adult.

Residents Encouraged to Donate Blood on September 3rd Blood Donations to Help Replenish Supplies Amid Coronavirus Public Health Crisis

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier have announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Thursday, September 3, 2020 to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The Blood Drive will take place from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. “Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. Now, during this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.”

The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by appointment only, with no walk-in donations accepted. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink ﬂuids in the days before the Blood Drive. “Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For information, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6304.
