Women of Distinction L e v i t t o w n Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald and Board of Education Vice President Peggy Marenghi both received a 2016 Women of Distinction Award bestowed by the New York State Assembly’s 17th District during a ceremony held at the Farmingdale Public Library on August 13th. The annual award honors women who contribute to their community in the areas of business, education, military, community affairs, healthcare, government and volunteerism. A lifelong Levittown resident, Dr. McDonald began her educational

career as a teacher in the Levittown School District. Currently serving as the district’s superintendent of schools, Dr. McDonald has held numerous positions within the district, including director of pupil personnel services and assistant superintendent for business and finance. In addition, Dr. McDonald recently received the Hofstra George M. Estabrook Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award and the Nassau County Legislature’s 2016 Trailblazer Award. Also a lifelong Levittown resident, Mrs. Marenghi has served as a school district trustee since 2009.

She recently retired from her longtime position as principal of the New Hyde Park Road School in New Hyde Park, N.Y. Mrs. Marenghi is also a member of the American Red Cross, an organization with which she has participated in disaster relief efforts during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy and September 11th, 2001. Steps to Choosing the Right Pre-school Kindergarten used to mark a child’s first foray into formal education, but pre-school has now taken up that mantle for many students. Some parents may recall their own pre-school experiences, mostly remembering extended moments of play and more monitored fun inside the school. But as the world of education has become more competitive, and students are required to meet certain standards at even earlier grade levels than before, pre-school has undergone its own transformation.

While parents who hope to enroll their students in pre-school may have to choose between a play- or academic-based curriculum, there are other factors to consider as well. Is proximity to your home important? Some parents prefer that their children’s pre-schools be close to home, while others want a school closer to their office. If your commute to work is long, then keep in mind that children will spend more time at a pre-school close to

home, which can cost more and reduce the amount of time parents and their children spend together. Should the school be faith-based? Religious organizations frequently offer their own faith-based preschool programs. Parents will have to decide if they want a faith-based curriculum for their young children.

Are pre- and post-care services available? A school that has flexible hours may be appealing to some. This enables parents to drop off and pick up children according to their own work schedules or in coordination with school hours for other children in the family. Visit the school and assess the

Many parents are aware that extracurricular activities can help students improve their chances of gaining admission to college. But students who choose the right extracurricular activities will benefit in greater ways than simply strengthening their college applications. The following are a handful of ways parents can help their sons and daughters choose extracurricular activities they can benefit from for years to come: Ask kids to jot down their interests.

Students are more likely to enjoy and excel at extracurricular activities that align with their existing interests. Ask kids to jot down a list of their interests or anything they might want to try. Youngsters might want to learn a musical instrument even if they have never before taken a course on music. Once kids have listed their interests, look for activities that allow them to further explore those interests. Chances are there is a schoolsponsored or community-based club or organization that will align with at least one thing on your child’s list. Encourage kids to have fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy and fully commit to an activity if they find it fun. While extracurricular activities can help kids grow as people and improve their image in the eyes of college

admissions officers, kids will get even more out of an activity if they enjoy doing it. Look for something that won’t interfere with schoolwork. Extracurricular activities can look great on a college application, but that benefit is lost if the activity interferes with a student’s academic performance. Some activities, including sports, demand more of students’ time than others, but make sure kids know that school always comes first. Ask around. Ask neighbors or school officials for recommendations to help kids who have tried but failed to find the right fit with regard to extracurricular activities. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error before a child finds an activity he or she is comfortable with. Fellow parents can make great

resources, and school officials likely know of a host of clubs and organizations that kids may be interested in. Sign up with your kids. If kids are hesitant to sign up for an activity because they are shy, sign up with them. Volunteer organizations are typically family-friendly, and kids might be more likely to come out of their shells if they sign up with their parents or siblings. As kids grow more comfortable with an activity, they will want to get more involved even if mom and dad don’t have the time. Parents can employ various strategies to help kids find activities they can be passionate about for years to come.

I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

The Buck Starts Here When facing the unexpected, a touch of security can go a long way. Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and CSEA Local 880 President Charles Selitto partnered with Michael Cooney of United Way Long Island in a second annual campaign to aide struggling families and residents within the Town of Hempstead. “United Way is a wonderful organization which has proven time and time again that it will lend a helping hand during times of hardship,” said Supervisor Santino. “We are thrilled to partner with an organization that has such a beneficial impact on

struggling people.” “The Buck Starts Here” campaign invited town employees to contribute a charitable gift of $1.00 or more per paycheck to the United Way organization, an agency that provides support to over 100 organizations on Long Island. Town of Hempstead employees generated a total of almost $5,000; a sizeable increase from the previous campaign total of $3,600. United Way has allocated $495,000 to 31 charities in the Town of Hempstead, including the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Economic Opportunity Commission,

and Family and Children’s Association. Additionally, through Project Warmth, they brought emergency heating assistance to 578 town families. The United Way is currently helping 107 local families rebuild their homes after Hurricane Sandy. “The campaign was an immediate success,” concluded Supervisor Santino. “Our employees jumped at the chance to help families that are facing adversity. Despite extreme, oppressive heat hovering at approximately 100 degrees, Junior Firefighters trained in search & rescue, hose relay competitions, vehicle extrication, second-ﬂoor bailouts, forcible entry simulations and more on Friday, August 12th at the Hudson Fire Department, in Hudson, NY during the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s (FASNY) 8th annual Youth Day. Junior firefighters wore full ‘turn-out gear’ and carried heavy equipment up ladders, across terrain, and wielded tools in replicated emergency situations. The hands-on training helps prepare the youngsters as they travel up the ranks to one day serve as volunteer firefighters in their communities. Dozens of adult Youth Group Advisors and Fire Department Instructors, with FASNY leaders, made the trip, organized the events, provided training – all on a volunteer basis.
