It’s back-to-school time for college students. Avoiding the dreaded “freshman 15” weight gain is a challenge to some young students when faced for the first time with a daily array of healthy and not-sohealthy food choices. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that college students, and everyone, know their daily calorie needs and try to create a healthy eating plan that incorporates a few basic healthy eating goals. Weight Gain A Growing Problem More than 60% of adults in the US are either overweight or obese and the most significant weight changes occur in the 18-29 year old age group. A study by Washington University in St. Louis on college students’ weight gain showed that body weight increased in 70% of the
290 students studied between the beginning of their freshman year and the end of their sophomore year. So what’s a few extra pounds? Obesity can lead to health complications such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Less than 1% of U.S. adults meet the definition
for ideal healthy diet and essentially no children meet the goal. To successfully manage weight, the AHA encourages people to learn about healthier food choices and know how many calories to eat daily. The AHA offers a free online BMI/personal calorie tool at http://bit.ly/ BMIcalorietool .

Produce provides a variety of important vitamins and nutrients and they’re naturally low in calories,” said Dr. Jean Cacciabaudo, Chief of Cardiology at Southside Hospital and President of the Long Island Board of Directors. All-you-can-eat dining facilities can tempt even the most wellintentioned, health conscious student. “When students see a variety of unhealthy selections at the food bar, it’s hard to resist. But
knowing their individual calorie needs and having a plan before they reach the cafeteria will help avoid making unhealthy choices,” she said. Cacciabaudo, suggests that students choose whole-grain foods that are filling, slow to digest and nutrient-rich. When it comes to proteins, she suggests choosing lean proteins like fish, turkey, chicken and beans. A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who
play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things
– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

A mother of 23-year-old twins, she wanted to create a unique school where pre-schoolers received the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefited from her professional background and the “world class” training that she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where “only mothers” teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American dance delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she
for the New York City Ballet, received a $6,500 scholarship to NYU for dance education and a $2,000 academic scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and is now under contract with the company. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo & Juliet, and in July 2004 was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally, across Long Island, as well as nationally, in New York City. Classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Streetdance, Modern and Irish step; as well as Acro, Musical Theatre and Terrific Toddler Time for both boys and girls. Many parents need a pay-by-thehour drop-off program while they run errands, shuttle a sibling to a sports practice, or could use a teacher’s help on an unfamiliar homework subject.
