Life on a college campus can be exciting, especially for freshmen enjoying their first taste of life away from home. As exciting as campus life can be, it also can be a bit nervewracking for students who have never before had to fend for themselves.

A recent report from Campus Safety and Security, there were 38,100 reported criminal offenses, including burglary and identity theft, on college campuses in the United States in 2017. Students need not live in fear on campus, but embracing various safety measures can make life at

school that much safer.

The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. Some positions a member may be assigned are Ticket Booth Attendants, Ticket Takers, Station Masters and Souvenir Stand Attendants. Members are also encouraged to help out on scheduled “work days” with various tasks, such as landscaping and track work.

Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are “scheduled” work days, where members come together and work on whatever needs to be done at that time. However, members can be found working on equipment and projects throughout their free time!

If you would like to attend the next public run day, it will take place on Sunday, August 29th. There is no charge for rides on public run days, however they accept donations of any size.

Busy schedules, hybrid learning and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last year-plus. The months since a pandemic was declared in March of 2020 have been unlike any other, and confronting the academic challenges of the pandemic may have adversely affected some students’ grades. A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school students with two or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year compared to the year prior, but students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing. Failing grades are not necessarily the most notable indicator that students can benefit from the services of a tutor. The Princeton Review says 25 percent of high school students say homework is their biggest source of stress, and homework progress can help parents determine if it’s time to call in a tutor. Students who find their homework is taking too long, particularly double or triple the amount of time it once required, may need some extra help. Here are some additional indicators that a tutor may be needed.

County Executive Curran Cuts Ribbon On Newly Constructed Memorial Gazebo

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was joined by the family of a local Eagle Scout, Cory Levy and the family of slain ATF agent John Capano for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the reconstructed John Capano Memorial Gazebo at Washington Avenue Park in Seaford. One year ago, Tropical Storm Isaias swept up the East Coast causing millions of dollars’ worth of property damage, including the destruction of this memorial gazebo. The gazebo was originally built in 2014 by then 15year Boy Scout Cory Levy to memorialize the tragic death of Capano, the slain federal agent from Seaford. With the help of the community, outside groups and Nassau County, the gazebo was rebuilt. “It was important to us to rebuild this memorial gazebo after it

was destroyed by Tropical Storm Isaias. Important to not only help preserve the memory of John, but to send a clear message that Nassau County does not and will not forget those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “We will always rebuild, and we will always come back stronger than before. I want to thank the Nassau County Parks Department for overseeing the reconstruction, along with the Long Island Board of Realtors, who generously helped fund this project.” “Long Island Board of REALTORS® is honored to be a part of the reconstruction of the Seaford Memorial Gazebo, to ensure that slain federal agent John Capano’s sacrifice is not

forgotten, and to restore the efforts and hard work by Eagle Scout Cory Levy,” said LIBOR President Susan Helsinger. “As REALTORS®, it is our livelihood to support and assist in making our communities a better place to live, work and play.” John Capano, who grew up in Seaford, died while attempting to stop a robbery at a local pharmacy on December 31, 2011. John, a veteran AFT agent, thwarted the robbery, but was caught in a friendly fire incident by a retired police officer who was next door at the time and responded to the scene when he was notified. This memorial is intended to serve as a reminder of John’s heroism in protecting his beloved neighborhood and fellow residents.

Hold On To That Balloon! PSEG Long Island cautions that metallic balloons can be hazardous The next few months are filled with special events that are often celebrated with Mylar balloons. PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that

Dear Community Partner: In recent months, the Seaford Historical Society has been able to resume business and limited activity, in and around the museum. If you have visited the property, you have seen the evergrowing Heritage Walkway that provides entrance to the building. Thank you for any bricks that have been purchased thus far. While the initial bricks were installed in November 2020, new brick orders are always available for purchase on our website (www.seafordhistorical.org). In fact, we have submitted two additional sets of orders this Spring, with one set already laid in place and the second order currently in the engraving process. In May, the long-planned Bell Tower initiative was completed with the entire museum now having been repainted, top to bottom ,tower to trim! New landscaping occurred simultaneously.so that your next visit or view will provide you with a completely new vision of our beloved building

Visiting hours have begun once again, with the museum open the first Sunday of every month from noon to 3. The visiting day for September is on the 12th 9to accommodate Labor Day and religious holidays). On September 23rd at 7 PM at the museum, we will resume our monthly meetings. We welcome all to the museum for our first presentation in over 18 months: long-time Seaford resident Fred Roth speaking about HIGH HILL BEACH. The presentation will highlight this historic attraction in the years prior to Jones Beach and Zach’s Bay. In addition to Fred’s talk, we will revive all of a meeting’s usual traditions: Society news, a special presentation, raffle, 50/50, hospitality, and just an opportunity to catch up with friends. We request that all guests wear a mask. Our September schedule continues just three days later, with another special

event, the Seaford Historical Society Treasure and Plant Sale. That’s Sunday Sept. 26th, 11 am to 4 pm on the museum grounds. Pandemic byproducts and continued economic impacts, which you know all to well, have limited our ability to host a full-scale Harvest Fair. We thank you for your sponsorships and donations of previous years. While hoping for the best in 2022, we still want to give our members, community friends and local partners a day to stop by and a day to shop by! We will be selling some attic treasures, Seaford apparel, museum souvenirs, and seasonal plants (mums and kale). It will be a different emphasis and a low key approach to trappings of an annual Harvest Fair.
